Iannis Xenakis’ Persepolis stood as witness to one of the most important events in modern human history, the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Its existence is owed to an invitation to participate in the 1971 Shiraz Arts Festival, which was overseen by Empress Farah Pahlavi. Like the Festival, and the extravagant celebratory party held the same year, Xenakis’ symbolic paean to Persian history was polarizing. Many loved it, others detested it. Overwhelming but also subtle and precise in its non-harmonic shifts in texture and density, listeners and critics simply did not know what to make of it. This book tells the story of Xenakis’ early history and involvement in the Resistance against the Axis occupation of Greece during the Second World War, escape and re-settlement in Paris, work as an architect with Le Corbusier, and distinct views on world history and politics that all led to his 1972 electro-acoustic album Persepolis.

Kraanerg by Iannis Xenakis is one of the most important works of the post-1950 era. Natela Iankoshvili is regarded as the most important woman artist in Georgia during the 20th century. Born in Tiflis in 1918, she spent her entire life in Georgia. The career of the prize-winning artist was crowned in 2000 with the opening of her own museum in the capital, to which she bequeathed over one thousand works from her unconventional oeuvre. Although she was socialised in the Soviet Union, until her death in 2007 Natela Iankoshvili never painted according to the dictates of Socialist Realism. Her highly individual works exhibit a brushwork that vaguely recalls the art of Niko Pirosmani, Paul Gauguin or El Greco, and radiate such colour force that their brilliance is often compared with that of jewels. This impression is also created by the strong contrast with the mostly black background of her paintings, which are all representational.

Karen Rosenberg wrote of her in The New York Times: “High priestess, matriarch, sex goddess: the self-taught American artist Dorothy Iannone has been called all these things and more. Since the early 1960s she has been making paintings, sculptures and artist’s books that advocate ‘ecstatic unity,’ most often achieved through lovemaking.” Beginning with the famous “An Icelandic Saga,” in which Iannone narrates her journey to Iceland (where she meets Dieter Roth and leaves her husband to live with him), this singular volume traces Iannone’s search for “ecstatic unity” from its carnal beginnings in her relationships with Roth and other men into its spiritual incarnation as she becomes a practicing Buddhist.
