Globe Law and Business Ltd Intellectual Property Strategy: A Practical Guide to IP Management
Over the past three decades, the make-up of the market value of Standard & Poor 500 companies has changed dramatically. While intangible assets amounted to less than one-third of company value in the mid-1980s, this has almost tripled to four-fifths on average today. A large contributor to this trend is intellectual property (IP) – a situation that is even truer for start-up companies, where IP assets may be the only significant asset a company has for quite some time. It is therefore important that company leaders understand the intricacies of IP strategy and how it is an integral part of a successful business strategy. This guide provides a solid grounding in concepts such as IP generation, IP valuation, portfolio management and the monetisation of IP assets, as well as practical guidance on setting an IP strategy and managing the risks associated with third-party intellectual property. For a holistic understanding, less formal IP assets such as trade secrets and brand strategy are covered in addition to patents and trademarks. Topics are introduced clearly and accessibly to provide decision makers with the necessary background to make informed decisions in cooperation with specialist in-house or external advisers. Chapter features include key pointers, digestible chapter summaries, and helpful diagrams and checklists, as well as case studies to bring theory into sharp practical focus. Whether your company is firmly established or just starting out, this accessible guide is essential reading to facilitate informed decision-making on IP issues. It will also provide those working with intellectual property with a high-level overview of current thinking on IP strategy.

The Merlin Press Ltd George Dawson and His Circle: The Civic Gospel in Victorian Birmingham
‘By the gains of Industry, we promote Art’ ‘In Birmingham you may generally recognise a board school by it being the best building in the neighbourhood, with its lofty towers, gabled windows, warm red bricks and stained glass.’ So observed the Pall Mall Gazette in 1894. The famous civic gospel shaped Birmingham as ‘the best governed city in the world.’ The inspiration for the transformation of Birmingham in the second half of the 19th century came from the sermons of ‘the greatest talker in England’ George Dawson. The men who oversaw the improvement of the town mostly sat on Sunday mornings in the pews of the Church of the Saviour. These were the men who were responsible for: a unique memorial library dedicated to the works of Warwickshire’s very own William Shakespeare; the foremost provincial institute (the Birmingham and Midland Institute); the first municipal technical school; the most famous art school in the country; and an enviable new art gallery. More improvements were developed by the town council: schools, baths and wash houses; the municipalisation of the gas and water supplies; and an impressive new thoroughfare, suitably christened Corporation Street.

Seagull Books London Ltd The Rest Is Slander – Five Stories
A collection of previously untranslated stories from a master of twentieth-century Austrian literature, Thomas Bernhard. “The cold increases with the clarity,” said Thomas Bernhard while accepting a major literary prize in 1965. That clarity was the postwar realization that the West’s last remaining cultural reference points were being swept away by the ever-greater commodification of humankind. Collecting five stylistically transitional tales by Bernhard, all of which take place in sites of extreme cold, this volume extends that bleak vision of the master Austrian storyteller. In “Ungenach,” the reluctant heir of an enormous estate chooses to give away his legacy to an assortment of oddballs as he discovers the past of his older brother, who was murdered during a career in futile colonialist philanthropy. In “The Weatherproof Cape,” a lawyer tries to maintain a sense of familial solidarity with a now-dead client with the help of an unremarkable piece of clothing. “Midland in Stilfs” casts a jaundiced eye on the laughable efforts of a cosmopolitan foreigner to attain local authenticity on a moribund Alpine farmstead. In “At the Ortler,” two middle-aged brothers—one a scientist, the other an acrobat—meditate on their unusual career paths while they climb a mountain to reclaim a long-abandoned family property. And in “At the Timberline,” the unexpected arrival of a young couple in a mountain village leads to the discovery of a scandalous crime that casts a shadow on the personal life of the policeman investigating it.

Harvard University Press Biblical and Pastoral Poetry
Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus, bishop of Vienne and a vigorous defender of Christian orthodoxy, was born into the senatorial aristocracy in southern Gaul in the mid-fifth century and lived until 518. The verse in Biblical and Pastoral Poetry was written in the late fifth or early sixth century. Avitus’s most famous work, the Spiritual History, narrates the biblical stories of creation, the Fall and expulsion from paradise, the Flood, and the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. He revitalizes Christian epic poetry, highlighting original sin and redemption and telling the history of Christian salvation with dramatic dialogue and rich description. In Consolatory Praise of Chastity—a verse treatise addressed to his sister, a consecrated virgin—illuminates the demands of the ascetic life from the perspective of a close family member. Avitus seeks to bolster his sister’s resolve with biblical examples of mental fortitude, constructing a robust model for female heroism. This volume presents new English translations of Avitus’s two extant poetic writings alongside the Latin texts.

Troubador Publishing Steel Town Cricketers: 150-odd Years of Motherwell Cricket Club
In the early 1870s, all roads led to Motherwell. The town needed skilled labour for the iron works, and amongst the newcomers were a bunch of blokes from Shropshire and North Wales who wanted to play cricket. This was the start of Motherwell Cricket Club, founded by proper steelmen. The book spans 150 years of club cricket. There are tales of ladies promenading the cricket field as smoke belched out factory chimneys; stories of crowds in their thousands watching Motherwell take on local rivals, Newmains and Bellshill; and memories of cricketing legends who graced Motherwell’s delightful old Home Park ground, even a prime minister. It recalls great games and great nights, the Cricket Dinners and Player of the Year Awards, and remarkable characters who devoted large parts of their lives to the club. Motherwell is not a “big club” and hasn’t enjoyed too much success, and that’s the fascinating thing about its story - how it has survived against the odds when world wars, pavilion fires, and diminishing playing resources threatened to spoil the fun. Happily, Motherwell Cricket Club is alive and well, still playing cricket in a footballing town.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Wars of Alexander's Successors 323–281 BC: Volume 2: Battles and Tactics
When the dying Alexander the Great was asked to whom he bequeathed his vast empire, he supposedly replied to the strongest. There ensued a long series of struggles between his generals and governors for control of these vast territories. Most of these Diadochi, or successors, were consummate professionals who had learnt their trade under Alexander and, in some cases, his father Philip. This second volume studies how they applied that experience and further developed the art of war in a further four decades of warfare. This is a period rich in fascinating tactical developments. The all-conquering Macedonian war machine developed by Philip and Alexander was adapted in various ways (such as the addition of war elephants) by the different successors according to their resources. Siege and naval warfare is also included.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Wars of Alexander's Successors 323 - 281 BC: Volume 1: Commanders and Campaigns
When the dying Alexander the Great was asked to whom he bequeathed his vast empire, he supposedly replied to the strongest". There ensued a long series of struggles between his generals and governors for control of these territories. Most of these Diadochi (Successors) were consummate professionals who had learnt the art of war under Alexander or even his father, Philip. Few died a peaceful death and the last survivors of this tough breed were still leading their armies against each other well into their seventies. Colourful characters, epic battles, treachery and subterfuge make this a period with great appeal to anyone interested in ancient history and ancient warfare in particular. The wars shaped the map from the Balkans to India for the next couple of centuries. This first volume introduces the key personalities - characters such as Antigonos Monopthalmus" (the One-eyed) and his son 'Demetrius 'Poliorcetes' (the Besieger), Seleucus 'Nicator' ('the Victorious') and Ptolemy Soter" ("the Saviour") - and gives a narrative of the causes and course of these wars from the death of Alexander to the Battle of Corupedium (281 BC) when the last two original Diadochi faced each other one final time.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Lancelot-Grail: 4. Lancelot part III and IV: The Old French Arthurian Vulgate and Post-Vulgate in Translation
Lancelot is the central romance of the Vulgate Cycle, in which the chivalric elements in Arthur's court come to the fore. These chivalric elements contain the seeds of Arthur's destruction and the dissolution of the Round Table, as Lancelot's love for Guinevere undermines his bond to Arthur; the tension between love, prowess and loyalty is the undercurrent of the long romance which describes the exploits which he performs in her service. It also includes many stories which are chivalric adventures largely unrelated to the main theme, and uses the device of interweaving these stories to form a huge stream of narrative. This series of episodic pictures leads ultimately to the birth of Lancelot's son Galahad, who is destined to become the hero of the Grail. Parts three and four of Lancelot begin with the episode of the false Guinevere, in which Guinevere is accused of being an impostor; Lancelot is then abducted and imprisoned by Morgan le Fay, who out of hatred for Arthur intends to reveal their love to the king. When he escapes, Guinevere is abducted by Meleagant, and Lancelot has to rescue her. In the course of these adventures, the Grail appears for the first time: Lancelot comes to the Burning Tomb, where he learns that his sins will prevent him from succeeding in the Grail Quest; and Gawain reaches the Grail Castle, but fails the test. For afull description of the Vulgate Cycle see the blurb for the complete set.

Cambridge University Press The Diffusion of Social Movements: Actors, Mechanisms, and Political Effects
It is widely recognized that social movements may spread - or 'diffuse' - from one site to another. Such diffusion, however, is a complex and multidimensional process that involves different actors, networks, and mechanisms. This complexity has spawned a large body of literature on different aspects of the diffusion process, yet a comprehensive framework remains an elusive target. This book is a response to that need, and its framework focuses on three basic analytical questions. First, what is being diffused? Second, how does diffusion occur? Finally, what is the impact of diffusion on organizational development and shifts in the scale of contentious politics? This volume suggests that diffusion is not a simple matter of political contagion or imitation; rather, it is a creative and strategic process marked by political learning, adaptation, and innovation.

University of Washington Press Mapping Chinese Rangoon: Place and Nation among the Sino-Burmese
Mapping Chinese Rangoon is both an intimate exploration of the Sino-Burmese, people of Chinese descent who identify with and choose to remain in Burma/Myanmar, and an illumination of twenty-first-century Burma during its emergence from decades of military-imposed isolation. This spatial ethnography examines how the Sino-Burmese have lived in between states, cognizant of the insecurity in their unclear political status but aware of the social and economic possibilities in this gray zone between two oppressive regimes. For the Sino-Burmese in Rangoon, the labels of Chinese and Tayout (the Burmese equivalent of Chinese) fail to recognize the linguistic and cultural differences between the separate groups that have settled in the city—Hokkien, Cantonese, and Hakka—and conflate this diverse population with the state actions of the People’s Republic of China and the supposed dominance of the overseas Chinese network. In this first English-language study of the Sino-Burmese, Mapping Chinese Rangoon examines the concepts of ethnicity, territory, and nation in an area where ethnicity is inextricably tied to state violence.
