Gregory R Miller & Company Tony Feher: Drawings
A cornucopia of rarely seen drawings, full of delicacy and wit, from the acclaimed sculptor American artist Tony Feher (1956–2016) was best known for his sculptures and site-determined installations made of ubiquitous, everyday objects such as plastic bottles, glass jars, marbles, twine, cardboard boxes and other mass-produced items. It is less well known was that he was also a prolific draftsman who drew incessantly throughout his career. At the time of his death in 2016, Feher had assembled an archive of nearly 1,000 drawings—on napkins, discarded correspondence, restaurant menus, lined paper—which are now in the collection of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. In hasty arrays of image and text, these drawings reflect the same singular wit and aesthetic sensitivity that underpinned all his work. This monograph presents for the first time a selection of Feher's drawings: full of jokes, poems, schematic illustrations and the repeated images (such as a jug of water hung on cord) that would later populate his sculptural installations.

Marquand Books Inc Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris
Monumental, colorful and expressive, Matt Wedel’s ceramics revel in what’s possible with clay In a bright yellow studio nestled in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio, Matt Wedel (born 1983) builds ideas out of clay. A prolific maker, he regularly pivots between stoneware, earthenware and porcelain, exploring the expressiveness of material and color. Wedel’s focus shifts between figure and flora, representation and abstraction, monumental and intimate, object and drawing—dualities that have a supportive tension rather than being at odds with each other. For Wedel, everything that goes into the making of the object is the work of art. Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris investigates the development and cross-pollination of figuration and landscape in Wedel’s ceramic sculptures, as well as his own psychology and how it transforms both his work and the way he perceives his role as artist, father and global citizen.

Shanghai Press Reading Chinese Painting: Beyond Forms and Colors, A Comparative Approach to Art Appreciation
With fascinating commentary and beautiful artwork this Chinese art history book is allows Westerners to better understand traditional Chinese painting.Applying a comparative approach to Chinese and Western art, this art book examines the characteristics of traditional Chinese art and analyses the distinction between figure painting and portraiture. It examines the scenery in Chinese landscape painting and the sense of poetry within the paintings of flowers and birds so that the reader comes to understand the unique essence of Chinese art and is gradually led towards the evanescent world of spiritual abstraction displayed in Chinese painting. The development of Chinese painting is based upon the pursuit of the conceptual sense (yijing) found in traditional Chinese philosophy and classical literature. Confucianism determined the content of the development of painting and Daoism guided the concept of aestheticism within that development. In the history of Chinese art, every painter who made a contribution was also moral philosopher who sought the realms of the spirit. It would be no exaggeration to say that traditional Chinese painting is a "higher art" that has the functions of both civilizing the person and cultivating the mind. It is not simply a creation designed to satisfy the visual sense or to express individual emotion. It has always been harmonious, tranquil and restrained.

Oxfordshire Record Society From Country House Catholicism to City Church: The Registers of the Oxford Catholic Mission 1700–1875
Sacramental records known to survive from the Oxford Catholic Mission, 1700-1875. This volume presents the contents of the sacramental records known to survive from the Oxford Catholic Mission, 1700-1875. These original registers are held in five volumes in the Archives of the Oxford Oratory. The Oratory's Oxfordshire archive consists of registers from Waterperry House, the chapel of St Clement's, Oxford, and the church of St Aloysius Gonzaga, Oxford. [1] The registers feature much common form and use of Latin and the contents are made accessible here in transcribed, translated and tabulated form. The records opened up by this volume will be of use and interest to historians of religion, locality and family alike. They throw light on an era of 'country house' Catholicism, when the practice of the faith was largely linked to the presence of local landowners, they illuminate the theory and practice of legal exclusion, the gradual movement to a more public faith, and the emergence of a confident and outward-looking Roman Catholic role. The names and identities recorded in the registers help identify the nature of congregations and how they changed and varied over time. [1] A further brief register, from the Catholic chapel of St Mary the Virgin, Bampton, 1856¬60 found its archival home in the collection but is not historically linked to the Oxford Mission. It is included here for completeness. See also Appendix B.

AUTHOR: The son of an RAF pilot, Tony Fairbairn's childhood was spent on a variety of airfields around the world, which fired an early enthusiasm for aviation journalism and photography. While still at school in Singapore in the early 1960s he wrote his first article, for Air Pictorial, and then joined the RAF for a 30-year career. An active member of the RAF Historical Society, the American Aviation Historical Society and Air-Britain, he has authored two books, Action Stations Overseas and RAF Gibraltar, and over the years contributed to most of the national aviation magazines. His RAF duties included tours in Cyprus, Gibraltar and as an instructor at the RAF College, but it was a 1970s posting to East Anglia, an area resonant with disused American wartime airfields alongside current active ones, that sparked an interest in US aviation in general and the Second World War Eighth Air Force in particular. 150 b/w illustrations

Duke University Press Tony Allen: An Autobiography of the Master Drummer of Afrobeat
Tony Allen is the autobiography of legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, the rhythmic engine of Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. Conversational, inviting, and packed with telling anecdotes, Allen's memoir is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the musician and scholar Michael E. Veal. It spans Allen's early years and career playing highlife music in Lagos; his fifteen years with Fela, from 1964 until 1979; his struggles to form his own bands in Nigeria; and his emigration to France. Allen embraced the drum set, rather than African handheld drums, early in his career, when drum kits were relatively rare in Africa. His story conveys a love of his craft along with the specifics of his practice. It also provides invaluable firsthand accounts of the explosive creativity in postcolonial African music, and the personal and artistic dynamics in Fela's Koola Lobitos and Africa 70, two of the greatest bands to ever play African music.

Casemate Publishers Beneath the Restless Wave: Memoirs of a Cold War Submariner
An engaging first-hand memoir of life in the Royal Navy during the Cold WarTony Beasley joined the Royal Navy as a teenager in 1946. This biography recalls the adventures he had during his time in the Navy, from training and specialisation as a telegraphist to being unexpectedly sent to work on submarines. He describes what it was like to work on a submarine during the Cold War, and describes the patrols and missions he was involved in, in particular when the submarine he was serving on was sent to the Barents Sea to undertake covert operations, namely to spy on the Soviet Fleet. Before this mission the crew of the submarine were advised that if anything went wrong it 'never happened'. Needless to say it did go wrong. Tony emerged a hero, but a hero who wasn't allowed to tell anyone where he had been or what he had done. Now in his eighties, Tony finally gets to tell his story.

Emerald Publishing Limited Re-Inventing Realities
"Advances in Public Interest Accounting" is a research publication with two major aims. First, it aims to provide a forum for researchers concerned with critically appraising and significantly transforming conventional accounting theory, practice, teaching and research. Second, it aims to increase the social self-awareness of accounting practitioners, educators, and researchers, encouraging them to assume a greater responsibility for the profession's social role. We seek original manuscripts exploring all facets of this broad agenda. Illustrative of these aims, authors are concerned with: expanding accounting's focus beyond the behavior of individual corporate entities, encompassing the conflicts of interest within the accounting-regulatory process and effected groups; exploring alternatives to traditional economic and sociology models, beyond conventional efficiency and profitability measures of corporate performance; recognizing and examining the influences of gender and feminist theory, class and race, on accounting practice, education, and research. They are also concerned with: incorporating the significance of accounting as a communicative practice, as social dialogue, and as a social arbiter; recognizing and examining the effect of accounting practice on environmental issues and on the externalities imposed on local and global communities; examining accounting's participation in multinational expansion, consolidations, and changing economies undergoing transformations, such as Eastern and Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union, and the European Community; and, addressing the impact of new advances in information technologies.

Bloodaxe Books Ltd Uncollected Poems
R.S. Thomas (1913-2000) is a major writer of our time, one of the finest religious poets in the English language and one of Wales's greatest poets. His output was prolific: over six decades he published some 25 individual collections of poems, as well as several volumes of prose. A substantial number of his poems, however, have hitherto remained uncollected, and often elusive - poems published in newspapers, magazines and journals (many of them obscure), as well as in private or limited editions. Uncollected Poems - published to mark the centenary of Thomas's birth - brings together for the first time a rigorous selection of the best of these. The fruit of several years' research by Tony Brown and Jason Walford Davies, the volume makes available work which spans the whole of Thomas's career - from an early sonnet to his first wife, M.E. Eldridge (included in his first, unpublished, collection Spindrift in the late 1930s) and an early Iago Prytherch poem published in the Dublin Magazine, to poems which are powerful expressions of the metaphysical meditations of his later years. R.S. Thomas's Uncollected Poems takes its place alongside Collected Poems 1945-1990 (Dent, 1993; Phoenix, 2000), Selected Poems (Penguin, 2003) and Collected Later Poems 1988-2000 (Bloodaxe Books, 2004). It gives readers of R.S. Thomas's work access to much new and fascinating material. Uncollected Poems is a companion volume to R.S. Thomas's Collected Later Poems 1988-2000 (Bloodaxe Books, 2004), the sequel to Collected Poems 1945-1990 (Dent, 1993; Phoenix Press, 2000), which only covers his collections up to Experimenting with an Amen (1986). Collected Later Poems 1988-2000 reprints in full the contents of R.S. Thomas's last five collections, The Echoes Return Slow (Macmillan, 1988: unavailable for many years), and Bloodaxe's Counterpoint (1990), Mass for Hard Times (1992), No Truce with the Furies (1995) and the posthumously published Residues (2002). There is no overlap between the two Bloodaxe editions: none of the poems in Residues, uncollected at the time of his death in 2000, is included in Uncollected Poems.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Cycle of Excellence: Using Deliberate Practice to Improve Supervision and Training
How do the good become great? Practice! From musicians and executives to physicians and drivers, aspiring professionals rely on deliberate practice to attain expertise. Recently, researchers have explored how psychotherapists can use the same processes to enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy supervision for career-long professional development. Based on this empirical research, this edited volume brings together leading supervisors and researchers to explore a model for supervision based on behavioral rehearsal with continuous corrective feedback. Demonstrating how this model complements and enhances a traditional, theory-based approach, the authors explore practical methods that readers can use to improve the effectiveness of their own psychotherapy training and supervision. This book is the 2018 Winner of the American Psychological Association Supervision & Training Section's Outstanding Publication of the Year Award.

Yale University Press In the Company of Crows and Ravens
“Crows and people share similar traits and social strategies. To a surprising extent, to know the crow is to know ourselves.”—from the Preface “If corvids could read—and it seems they can do damn near everything else—they would surely find this book as entertaining and instructive as this human does."—Laurence A. Marschall, Natural History From the cave walls at Lascaux to the last painting by Van Gogh, from the works of Shakespeare to those of Mark Twain, there is clear evidence that crows and ravens influence human culture. Yet this influence is not unidirectional, say the authors of this fascinating book: people profoundly influence crow culture, ecology, and evolution as well. Examining the often surprising ways that crows and humans interact, John Marzluff and Tony Angell contend that those interactions reflect a process of “cultural coevolution.” They offer a challenging new view of the human-crow dynamic—a view that may change our thinking not only about crows but also about ourselves. Featuring more than 100 original drawings, the book takes a close look at the influences people have had on the lives of crows throughout history and at the significant ways crows have altered human lives. In the Company of Crows and Ravens illuminates the entwined histories of crows and people and concludes with an intriguing discussion of the crow-human relationship and how our attitudes toward crows may affect our cultural trajectory.

Royal Society of Chemistry Boron: Sensing, Synthesis and Supramolecular Self-Assembly
The ability to monitor analytes within physiological, environmental, and industrial scenarios is of prime importance in many scenarios. Chemists have striven to mimic nature’s ability to produce robust chemosensors with the capacity to detect molecules and signal their presence. The covalent coupling interaction between boronic acids and saccharides has been exploited to monitor saccharides. The boronic acid–and Lewis acid base interaction is also suitable for the capture and recognition of anions, which are involved in fundamental processes in all living things. There have been significant advances in the field of boronic acid based receptors and this book provides a comprehensive overview and update on the topic. Not only are the applications of boron in chemical molecular sensors covered in detail, but their synthesis and supramolecular self-assembly are also presented. Topics include: the molecular recognition of saccharides, the complexation of boronic acids with saccharides, fluorescent sensors and the modular construct of fluorescent sensors, further sensory systems for saccharide recognition and an extensive bibliography. Edited by experts in the area and containing international contributions from leading research groups on the subject, this book provides a useful resource for graduate students, academic and industrial researchers in organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials science and bio-organic chemistry.
