The 2007 bridge collapse in Minneapolis-St. Paul quickly became symbolic of the debilitated interstate highway system, and of what many critics see as America's disinvestment in its infrastructure. Today Marianne North is remembered for the gallery in Kew Garden named after her. Alongside Isabella Bird, she was the most popular and well-known lady-traveller in nineteenth-century England. She travelled to all parts of the world and left numerous botanical drawings. Unlike Isabella Bird, however, she did not leave any travel records and only the three volumes reprinted here are the textual source of her travelling. Compiled by her sister, these volumes are more like a chronological history of Marianne North’s travelling than a biography and provide indispensable material for those studying Victorian lady-travellers.

Es war purer Zufall, dass die beiden Filmenthusiasten Rolf Thiele und Hans Abich nach dem Krieg in Göttingen landeten. Auf einem ehemaligen Wehrmachtsflughafen fanden sie eine leerstehende Halle, die sie zu einer der modernsten Atelieranlagen nach dem Weltkrieg ausbauten. Buchstäblich im Rucksack wurden die ersten technischen Geräte aus Berlin nach Göttingen transportiert. Göttingen sollte, so die idealistische Idee der Gründer, die Keimzelle einer neuen Filmkultur werden. This book intends to prove that Lucrezia Marinella should be included in the Italian and European literary canons as a most remarkable contributor, as she excelled in several literary genres: epic, hagiography, poetry, and treatise writing. It also examines the place that Marinella holds within the dominant literary tradition of seventeenth-century Italy as a writer, as well as a woman who lived within a predominantly patriarchal culture. Integrating its values and expectations into her own view of reality, Marinella interprets literary tradition through her perspective by presenting female 'heroines' engaged within the pastoral and epic traditions, the allegorical mode, and the spiritual quest. The purpose of most of her work is to show the 'nobility and excellence' of women and to defend the reputation of women from the slander directed at them by men. Although several articles have been written on various aspects of Marinellas work, a thorough and critical analysis of her most important works,and especially of her last one, together with an assessment of her place in Venetian, Italian, and European womens literary histories, are still missing. When we approached the area, Captain Pless asked the crew, "you all with me?" He knew the answer would be yes. As we flew on, we saw four U.S. personnel laying on the beach and around them, not less forty or fifty armed Viet Cong. They, the V.C., were beating the helpless personnel. As we flew over the group of people, one of the beach waved to us, and for his efforts got a rifle butt in the face. The V.C. were too close to the Americans to safely fire at them, but the V.C. were killing them anyway, so Captain Pless ordered the right door gunner, Gunnery Sergeant Poulson, to fire on them. It took only a short burst to send the V.C. running for cover. When Captain Pless saw this, he immediately rolled in hot with rockets and guns.
