This collection of ten essays offers the first systematic assessment of Jürgen Habermas's "Philosophical Discourse of Modernity," a book that defended the rational potential of the modern age against the depiction of modernity as a spent epoch. The essays (of which four are newly commissioned, five were published in the journal "Praxis International," and one -- by Habermas -- first appeared in translation in "New Critique" ) are divided into two sections: "Critical Rejoinders" and "Thematic Reformulations." An opening essay by d'Entrè ves sets out the main issues and orients the debate between Habermas and the postmodernists by identifying two different senses of responsibility: a responsibility to act versus a responsibility to otherness (an openness to difference, dissonance, and ambiguity). These are linked with two alternative understandings of the primary function of language: action-orienting versus world-disclosing. This is a fruitful way of looking at the issues that Habermas has raised in his attempt to resurrect and complete the project of Enlightenment. Citizens are political simpletons--that is only a modest exaggeration of a common characterization of voters. What moral or allegorical lessons can Homer's epics teach? Six essays by Christophoros Kondoleon, a 16th-century Greek scholar working in Rome during the last phase of Italian humanism, illustrate the moral qualities (esp. the autourgia) of the heroes, provide close readings of the two proems and of the description of Agamemnon's panoply in Iliad 11, answer a collection of miscellaneous, mostly philosophical "Homeric questions", and gather passages "on the good general (and soldier) according to Homer". While sometimes overtly indebted to the approaches of earlier Homerists (from Aristotle to ancient scholia, from Porphyry to Eustathios of Thessalonike, etc.), Kondoleon's treatises are unique both as original products in their own right, and as the only truly exegetical writings on Homer in Greek humanism. The present book provides the first critical edition (in two cases, the editio princeps) of these texts, with facing Italian translation and an introductory essay sketching their main features, their cultural significance, and some of their sources.

It follows the publication of the Malone Society edition of the 1604 text in 2018. This is one of the most celebrated of all Elizabethan plays, famous for its treatment of the damnation of Faustus and his struggles with his divided conscience. It combines spectacular visual effects with sophisticated theological discussion.The edition reproduces in facsimile the only surviving copy of the play, which is held in the British Library. A rich interdisciplinary exploration of the world of Sara Levy, a Jewish salonnière and skilled performing musician in late eighteenth-century Berlin, and her impact on the Bach revival, German-Jewish life, and Enlightenment culture. Sara Levy née Itzig (1761-1854), a salonnière, skilled performing musician, and active participant in enlightened Prussian Jewish society, played a powerful role in shaping the dynamic cultural world of late eighteenth- and earlynineteenth-century Berlin. A patron and collector of music, she studied harpsichord with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84) and commissioned musical compositions from both Friedemann and his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88). Archival evidence demonstrates Levy's position as an essential link in the transmission of the music of their father, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and as a catalyst for the "Bach revival" of the early nineteenth century, which was led by her great-nephew Felix Mendelssohn. Sara Levy's World: Gender, Judaism, and the Bach Tradition in Enlightenment Berlin represents the first scholarly exploration of the cultural, political, and aesthetic contexts that shaped Levy's world.
