Papers presented at the Fifteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2007 (see also Studia Patristica 44, 45, 47, 48 and 49). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Is there such a thing as a 'European academic world'? The European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS) operates on the principle that there is, and this volume is an attempt to present the facts on which this conviction is based. The eight plenary lectures delivered at the EAJS Congress of 2002 all dealt with the past, present and, in some measure, future of Jewish Studies as they developed in Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Eastern Europe and Russia, and the United Kingdom: a pan-European perspective concludes the whole. At the opening ceremony of the congress, in the "Esnoga" (Portuguese Synagogue) of Amsterdam, two further addresses were held, which both illustrate the firm rootedness of European Jewish culture in its European surroundings, as exemplified by the history and culture of the Amsterdam Portuguese Jewish community.

As the world of Jewish studies continues to expand, "Studia Rosenthaliana" enters a new phase with this 36th volume, the first in a series of yearbooks. In this edition, an international panel of authors takes an innovative look at the theme of Jewish multilingualism from various, multidisciplined perspectives. Several research projects on various aspects of Dutch Jewish history and culture are currently under way at academic institutions in Amsterdam and elsewhere, while Dutch academics are regularly involved in extensive international research projects. Les articles reunis dans ce volume explorent trois aspects des rapports entre le temps et le discours: la reference temporelle, le rapport entre le type de discours et l'emploi des temps verbaux et les manifestations discursives du developpement du systeme temporel au cours de l'acquisition. La reference temporelle, exprimee par les tiroirs verbaux et par certains connecteurs temporels, constitue un aspect important de la temporalite traite dans ce volume. Toutes les etudes qui portent sur les tiroirs verbaux abordent la reference temporelle de differents tiroirs comme le resultat d'une interaction complexe entre les instructions procedurales delivrees par le tiroir et les facteurs syntaxiques, lexico-conceptuels, discursifs et pragmatiques lies au contexte de son emploi. Un autre aspect de la temporalite aborde ici est une interdependance etroite entre le type de discours et l'emploi des tiroirs verbaux. Precisons que le terme de type de discours s'applique aussi bien a un type d'enonces specifique qu'aux types de textes. Les etudes du troisieme type portent sur la mise en place progressive du systeme temporel chez les enfants. Cet aspect acquisitionnel de la temporalite est examine, sous un angle comparatif, pour la langue maternelle et pour la seconde langue, ainsi que pour une langue etrangere. With a radical emphasis on multiplication and movement, Edition MAT (Multiplication d’art transformable) presented an international selection of work by key figures in postwar kinetic and Op art. In recent years landscape and wildlife conservation has attracted increased attention from environmentalists and policy-makers. There have been policies within the European Union aimed at conserving wildlife and landscape in Europe for more than a decade and appraisal of these policies is opportune. A workshop was therefore held at the University of Hohenheim in September 1996 to examine critical issues associated with these policies. This workshop was one of a series, each focusing on a key theme as part of the EU Concerted Action, “Policy measures to control environmental impacts from agriculture”. This book presents a selection of revised papers from this workshop. The overall perspective is an economic one, with several chapters reviewing analytical methods, economic valuation of the benefits of agricultural landscapes and the costs and benefits of wildlife conservation. These are set in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy and environmental policies in the EU. Traditionally, organizations have consisted of collections of people who physically gather together in one place to carry out some kind of coordinated activity. Today, however, business is increasingly relying on "virtual" processes in which people engage in internet-mediated interactions that often span the globe. These processes create intangible "imaginary organizations" that exist largely as a concept in the minds of electronically interacting individuals. As more and more high value-added work is performed by knowledge workers interacting through electronically mediated networks, however, managers and management researchers must evolve new concepts for monitoring, interpreting, assessing, and managing activities carried out in such virtual settings. This volume presents an important multidisciplinary approach to understanding these new kinds of imaginary organizations and their processes. The fourth volume in the Petra Papyri series, the scholarly publication meticulously documenting, translating and interpreting the information recovered from approximately 140 carbonized papyrus scrolls found during ACOR's excavation of the Petra Church. The scrolls had been carbonised in a fire and were thus preserved, although many scrolls were in a destroyed condition and could not be read. Such discoveries are exceedingly rare. The Petra papyri texts are dated c. 537 to 594 thanks to the law promulgated by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian to place the date at the beginning and end of a document. The scrolls vary in size from a single sheet such as P. Petra 6 (L. 28 cm), a list of stolen goods, to the exceptionally long P. Petra 2 (L. 8.5 m), which is an agreement concerned with inherited property. These documents deal with real estate transactions, disputes, contracts, divisions of property, marriages, dowries, and inheritance. The central figures of the archive are Theodoros, son of Obodianos, who was deacon and later archdeacon in the church, and his extended family and peers. The language indicates that the people in Petra at this time were speaking an early form of Arabic. A team of papyrologists from Finland conserved these sixth century texts in 1994 and 1995 at ACOR in Amman as part of a major effort headed by Jaakko Frosen. The original fragments were placed on Japanese rice paper and sandwiched between glass plates so that they could be preserved and examined for study. Some scrolls are written on both sides (and they could not be mounted on paper) but most are single-sided. As noted, many texts have been translated and published in The Petra Papyri series (Amman: ACOR) by scholars from Finland and the University of Michigan. Some documents are exhibited at the Jordan Museum in Amman.

The late Donald King (d. 1998) was the founding father of textile studies in England. His knowledge of the technology and history of textiles of all periods across many lands remains unsurpassed. An erudite and yet modest scholar, he did much to promote the academic understanding of textiles, both in this country and abroad. His role as Keeper of Textiles in the Victoria and Albert Museum, allowed first-hand technical analysis of a large number of medieval and later textiles over a very wide range of techniques. This laid the foundations for his abiding interest in textile techniques, which was allied to his fascination with textile terminology as it appeared in documentary sources. Much of his museum scholarship found its way into publications such as the Victoria and Albert Museum Bulletin and Hali magazine. From 1977 onwards, as President of C.I.E.T.A. (the International organisation for the study of early textiles), he led a powerful lobby of textile specialists, including all the major museum keepers of textiles across the globe. His scholarship during this period was well represented through detailed and erudite articles of technical, art historical and contextual significance, published in the C.I.E.T.A. Bulletin. His twin role as scholar and textile keeper represented the meeting of the academic and the museum worlds across textile studies. This publication gathers together for the first time a representative selection of Donald King's scholarship, in seventeen studies written and published over the period 1960-1999. Seven of the papers are grouped to illustrate the wide range of techniques across which he was able to publish (woven IX; embroidered X, XI; tapestry XII; printed XIIIand pile/carpet techniques XIV, XV). Three further papers (II, III, VIII) illustrate his tremendous facility for close technical analysis of his materials, whilst his linguistic gifts, which allowed him to solve the intricate puzzles posed by textile terminology used in medieval sources, are celebrated in four further papers (IV-VII). Study II shows how he integrated these different avenues of approach into the intricate textile method that he developed. Two more papers have been included, to illustrate Donald King's notable ability to communicate his enthusiasm and expertise about textiles to a wide audience. The study entitled 'Magic in the Web' (XVII) was designed to engage the general public and it was received with tremendous enthusiasm both as a lecture and as a published piece. The paper on 'Early Textiles with Hunting subjects in the Keir collection', (I) served both the academic and the museum world, and it illustrated for the connoisseur what could be learnt by those engaged in building up private collections of medieval textiles.

De lectuur van Gezelles poezie wordt tot op heden vaak ondernomen vanuit een romantische literatuuropvatting, waarbij het begrip originaliteit als sleutelwoord fungeert. Dat betekent o.a. dat (toevallig opgemerkte) interacties tussen Gezelles teksten en de hem omringende comtemporaine of oudere literatuur werden beschouwd als een randfenomeen, en dat de vraag naar de functie en de precieze aard van de intertextuele relaties die de Gezelliaanse fenotekst aangaat met zijn architeksten nauwelijks werd gesteld. Deze studie onderzoekt vooreerst hoe Gezelle als o.a. leraar, verantwoordelijke voor een volksbibliotheek, redacteur van een didactisch weekblad, beoefenaar van de comparatieve en historische taalkunde of samensteller van een almanak de zeventiende-eeuwse Zuidnederlandse (geestelijke) literatuur op intensieve wijze bevraagt en bestudeert. Het belang van Gezelles lectuur van die teksten voor zijn eigen poezie wordt dan geanalyseerd aan de hand van case studies, geordend in drie opstellen die elk een bepaald type "intertextuele" relatie in het licht stellen. Een tekstgenetische lectuur van enkele - soms gerenommeerde - gedichten demonstreert hoe de oude taal in se Gezelle inspireert tot het schrijven van poezie vanuit de dynamiek van de taal, die dan in een helder gestructureerde tekst wordt bedwongen. Verder wordt de manier belicht waarop Gezelle als poetisch ervaren (oude) taal of tekst via een aantal "Gezelliaanse" herschrijfregels aan de 19de-eeuwse lezer aanbiedt. Ten slotte worden enkele gecanoniseerde communiegedichten uit de periode 1850-1869 geconfronteerd met genologisch verwante 17de-eeuwse teksten. De intertextuele relaties die daarbij werden aangetroffen zijn divers, maar worden zeldzaam gekenmerkt door een (moderne) kritische of destructieve houding: de "vreemde" elementen gaan vrijwel onmerkbaar in de Gezelletekst over.

Vanaf de late zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde Antwerpen zich tot een van de voornaamste centra der Contrareformatie. Onder het religieuze propagandamateriaal dat er massaal voortgebracht werd, bekleedden de devotieprenten een voorname plaats. Zij drongen tot alle lagen van de bevolking door, zowel in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, als - via wijdvertakte handelsrelaties - in grote delen van Europa en zelfs daarbuiten. De rijk geillustreerde studie besteedt niet enkel aan gedrukte "sanctjes" en religieuze wandplaten aandacht, maar ook aan het werk van de weinig bestudeerde verluchters: miniaturen evenals gedrukte prenten die met geschilderde randversieringen of met een bekleding van textielfragmentjes opgesmukt waren. Het boek behandelt de productie, de religieus-ideologische achtergrond en de verspreiding van de Antwerpse devotieprenten. Op het bedrijfshistorische vlak onderzoekt de auteur, naast de binnen- en buitenlandse afzetmarkten, de rol van respectievelijk graveurs, verluchters, drukkers en handelaars in de prentenuitgeverij. The story of what happened at the colonial fortified town of Louisbourg between 1749 and 1758 is one of the great dramas of the history of Canada, indeed North America. The French stronghold on Cape Breton Island, strategically situated near the entrance to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, was from soon after its founding a major possession in the quest for empire. The dramatic military and social history of this short-lived and significant fortress, seaport, and community, and the citizens who made it their home, are woven together in A. J. B. Johnston’s gripping biography of the colony’s final decade, presented from both French and British perspectives. Endgame 1758 is a tale of two empires in collision on the shores of mid-eighteenth-century Atlantic Canada, where rival European visions of predominance clashed headlong with each other and with the region’s Aboriginal peoples. The magnitude of the struggle and of its uncertain outcome colored the lives of Louisbourg’s inhabitants and the nearly thirty thousand combatants arrayed against it. The entire history comes to life in a tale of what turned out to be the first major British victory in the Seven Years’ War. How and why the French colony ended the way it did, not just in June and July 1758, but over the decade that preceded the siege, is a little-known and compelling story.

This volume covers the two hundreds of Armingford and Thriplow in south-west Cam-bridgeshire. They comprise 23 ancient parishes, lying between the Gogmagog Hills south-east of Cambridge, where an Iron Age hill fort partly survives, and the clay-covered West Cambridge-shire upland. To the north-west they are largely bounded by the Cam or Rhee, to the south by heathlend along the Icknield Way. The land has long been used mainly for arable farming. Some of the villages, which are mostly nucleated, may stand near the sites of Roman or earlier settlement. Those in the far west had some dependent hamlets, mostly vanished long ago. In that area several villages, after the early inclosureof their poor, heavy soils for pasturage, shrank greatly or, as at Clopton and Shingay, became. entirely deserted. Elsewhere open fields survived until the early 19th century. Later in that century coprolites were widely dug; in the 20th com-mercial fruit growing was introduced; the chalk has been dug to make cement and whiting; and some of the larger villages, such as Melbourn, have attracted light industry. During the Second World War much level ground was taken over for airfields. The churches of the area range from the humble early Norman work at Hauxton, through cruciform 13th-century buildings, as at Fowlrnere, to the stately Decorated of Trumpington and Bassingbourn. The Igth century saw much rebuilding and refurnishing, sometimes financed by local religious plays. Several villages retain much timber framed vernacular building. The only aristocratic mansion, Gogmagog House of the dukes of Leeds at Wandlebury, has been demolished, but lesser houses include some well preserved late medieval manor houses and much good, plain Georgian work, as at Trumpington Hall, seat of the Pembertons. The villages near Cambridge have been greatly affected in the 20th century by the spread of population.
