Number One Poultry, London EC2R 8EJ, was a commission awarded by Peter Palumbo to James Stirling, Michael Wilford and Associates in May 1985. Designed from July 1985 onwards, it was completed in 1998. In 2016 it was listed grade II* and it is currently the youngest ever listed building in England. This book records the conversations between One Poultry and those involved with it over its controversial lifetime: Peter Palumbo, developer and patron; Michael Wilford, Stirling’s lifetime working partner; Laurence Bain, Number One Poultry project architect; Peter Rees, the City of London Planning Officer at the time; and Charles Jencks, architectural historian and theoretician of Post-Modernism. The book includes original, unpublished sketches and drawings of the building from conception to realisation, documentation that explains the value of its architecture and a selection of letters sent by distinguished individuals to the City of London Planning Office to protest against threatened, heavy alterations that anticipated the listing. One Poultry Speaks, devised and edited by Marco Iuliano, is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool, whence James Stirling graduated in 1950, and the Royal Institute of British Architects, which awarded him its Royal Gold Medal in 1980.

This book reviews and develops Bayesian non-parametric and semi-parametric methods for applications in microeconometrics and quantitative marketing. Most econometric models used in microeconomics and marketing applications involve arbitrary distributional assumptions. As more data becomes available, a natural desire to provide methods that relax these assumptions arises. Peter Rossi advocates a Bayesian approach in which specific distributional assumptions are replaced with more flexible distributions based on mixtures of normals. The Bayesian approach can use either a large but fixed number of normal components in the mixture or an infinite number bounded only by the sample size. By using flexible distributional approximations instead of fixed parametric models, the Bayesian approach can reap the advantages of an efficient method that models all of the structure in the data while retaining desirable smoothing properties. Non-Bayesian non-parametric methods often require additional ad hoc rules to avoid "overfitting," in which resulting density approximates are nonsmooth. With proper priors, the Bayesian approach largely avoids overfitting, while retaining flexibility. This book provides methods for assessing informative priors that require only simple data normalizations. The book also applies the mixture of the normals approximation method to a number of important models in microeconometrics and marketing, including the non-parametric and semi-parametric regression models, instrumental variables problems, and models of heterogeneity. In addition, the author has written a free online software package in R, "bayesm," which implements all of the non-parametric models discussed in the book.

The present volume provides the first collection of studies devoted to the so-called Lectura Thomasina, a commentary on Peter Lombard’s Sentences written by William of Peter of Godin at the beginning of the 14th century. The conspicuous number of verbatim quotations from Thomas Aquinas’ writings makes the text very interesting: Godin does not aim at producing a mere collection of Aquinas’ dicta, but rather a sort of ‘Thomistic’ teaching handbook. A popular text, the Lectura Thomasina was fundamental to the spread of ‘Thomistic’ thought in the years leading up to his canonization. The first section of the volume is devoted to a textual analysis of the Lectura Thomasina and its sources. The second section examines certain themes in Godin’s theology and philosophy. The last section focuses on his influence on the Dominican tradition.

Some years ago the author, Jim Forrest, a professional engineer and model engineer of many years' experience, needed a purpose-built and relatively inexpensive workshop for his hobby. After discussing this need with Peter Jennings, a professional architect familiar with system build construction, a three-metre wide design was developed which proved to be very easy to build and easily the match for far more expensive types of building. This book was written as a complete work on the construction methods used. It not only contains the details required to build the floor assembly, walls and roof, but also covers all of the peripheral areas including layout, planning regulations, tools, materials, fitting out, security and insurance. The design is easily adaptable and most variants are covered including several floor types, lean-to construction etc., and illustrative drawings are used extensively to show precisely how the building is detailed.

Berkeley Lectures on p-adic Geometry presents an important breakthrough in arithmetic geometry. In 2014, leading mathematician Peter Scholze delivered a series of lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on new ideas in the theory of p-adic geometry. Studies of air combat in the Vietnam War inevitably focus on the MiG-killing fighter engagements, B-52 onslaughts or tactical strikes on the Hanoi region. However, underlying all these was the secretive ‘electron war’ in which highly-skilled electronic warfare officers duelled with Soviet and North Vietnamese radar operators in the attempt to enable US strike forces to reach their targets with minimal losses. Orbiting at the edge of heavily-defended territory, the vulnerable EB-66s identified and jammed the enemy’s radar frequencies with electronic emissions and chaff to protect the American bombers. Their hazardous missions resulted in six combat losses, four of them to SA-2 missiles and one to a MiG-21, and they became prime targets for North Vietnamese defences when their importance was realised. This illustrated study focuses on the oft-overlooked B-66 series, examining their vital contributions to the Vietnam War and the bravery of those who operated them in some of the most challenging situations imaginable. Author Peter E. Davies also explores how the technology and tactics devised during the period made possible the development of the EF-111A Raven, an invaluable component of the Desert Storm combat scenario over Iraq and Kuwait in 1991, and the US Navy’s EA-6B Prowler, which entered service towards the end of the Vietnam War.
