Pen & Sword Books Ltd Betrayed Ally: China in the Great War
The Great War helped China emerge from humiliation and obscurity and take its first tentative steps as a full member of the global community. In 1912 the Qing Dynasty had ended. President Yuan Shikai, who seized power in 1914, offered the British 50,000 troops to recover the German colony in Shandong but this was refused. In 1916 China sent a vast army of labourers to Europe. In 1917 she declared war on Germany despite this effectively making the real enemy Japan an ally. The betrayal came when Japan was awarded the former German colony. This inspired the rise of Chinese nationalism and communism, enflamed by Russia. The scene was set for Japans incursions into China and thirty years of bloodshed. One hundred years on, the time is right for this accessible and authoritative account of Chinas role in The Great War and assessment of its national and international significance

Bonnier Books Ltd Daisy's Dragons: a story about feelings
A delightful picture book which explores the importance of emotions. WARNING! CONTAINS DRAGONS! Nobody but Daisy can see her dragons. Usually, they all get along in their own wonderful chaotic way, but Daisy's dragons aren't like ordinary dragons; Daisy's dragons are her feelings. So when Daisy has a very tricky day, suddenly all is not harmonious among the dragons. Sad keeps growing and growing, Angry is breathing fire at everyone and everything he sees, while Scared's screaming is driving everybody to distraction. Now some of Daisy's dragons feel bad. And Daisy doesn't want bad dragons. But Daisy soon discovers that without Angry, Sad and Scared, her other dragons are nowhere to be seen either. Could it be that to feel truly happy, calm and brave, Daisy needs all of her dragons together? Daisy's Dragons is a mindful metaphor that helps children understand the importance of all their emotions - even the negative ones. John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Myth of the Wrong Body
The most popular narrative about transsexuality suggests that some people are born in the wrong body – that their bodies do not correspond to their inner experience and that their bodies should therefore be transformed. But in the view of the sociologist and trans activist Miguel Missé, this narrative is a harmful myth. It is rooted in a medical paradigm that typically leads to medical intervention – to the use of hormones and surgical operations. By proposing a particular solution (modifying one’s body), doctors and psychiatrists make it difficult for trans people to overcome malaise about their body in other ways and prevent them from recognizing the burden of social norms. Drawing on his own personal experience, Missé makes the case for a different way of thinking about trans embodiment which focuses on gender identity. The trajectory that leads people to become trans is shaped by the rigidity of gender norms, where the only two models available to individuals are the masculine man and the feminine woman. But these are not the only possible choices, and by critically interrogating the rigidity of gender norms, Missé opens up a different way of thinking about being trans, beyond the essentialism of the medical paradigm.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance
The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance The at a Glance series is popular among medical students and junior doctors for its concise and simple approach and excellent illustrations. Each bite-sized chapter features colour diagrams and tip boxes, accompanied by explanatory text. Covering a wide range of topics, books in the at a Glance series are ideal as introductory subject texts or for revision purposes, and are useful throughout medical school and beyond. Everything you need to know about The Situational Judgement Test… at a Glance! The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance provides a sound introduction to the SJT and details ways you can prepare before the assessment. It includes worked case examples based on real-life scenarios which have been reviewed by experienced clinicians and examiners. The book draws out key aspects of professional practice relevant to the role of a junior doctor. This is based on the nine domains as outlined by the ISFP (Improving Selection to Foundation Programme), who detailed the behaviours necessary to be a competent Foundation Doctor. The overall aim of The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance is not to spoon feed hundreds of practice questions or reams of guidelines, but to steer you towards a logical way of approaching best medical practice – and therefore the SJT – with many examples of doctors’ personal experiences along the way. Challenging scenarios are analysed using guidelines from the General Medical Council and research interviews with patients, lab staff and healthcare professionals. All examples in the book are worked in a test-style apparatus, with questions on one side and detailed answers over the page so you can understand the reasoning behind the material.

The University of Chicago Press The Discourse of Police Interviews
Forensic linguistics, or the study of language and the law, is a growing field of scholarly and public interest. Yet books on the subject have predominantly been introductions to the field or aimed at summarizing its applications, often with a focus on a single aspect of the legal system. The Discourse of Police Interviews aims to further the discussion by focusing exclusively on how police interviews are constructed and used to investigate and prosecute crimes. The first book to focus exclusively on police interview dialogue, The Discourse of Police Interviews examines leading debates, approaches, and topics in contemporary police interview research. Among other topics, the book explores the sociolegal, psychological, and discursive framework of popular police interview techniques employed in the United States and the United Kingdom, such as PEACE and Reid, and the discursive practices of institutional representatives like police officers and interpreters that can influence the construction and quality of linguistic evidence. Together, the contributions situate the police interview as part of a complex, and multistage, criminal justice process. Despite the role of discourse in potentially shaping legal outcomes, the use of linguistic analysis to understand the legal process is yet to be fully and uniformly embraced, and the book will be of interest to both scholars and practitioners in a variety of fields, such as linguistic anthropology, interpreting studies, criminology, law, and sociology.

Maria Pia López, a founding member and active participant in the Not One Less protest, offers in this book a first-hand account of the distinctive aesthetics, characteristics and lineages of this popular feminist movement, while examining the broader issues of gender politics and violence, inequality and social justice, mourning, performance and protest that are relevant to all contemporary societies. A unique analysis of a social movement as well as a rich and original work of feminist theory and practice, this book will appeal to a wide readership concerned about gender based violence in the neoliberal contexts and what can be done to resist it.

In the years that followed, he experienced first-hand the forces that had engineered East New York’s dramatic decline and that continued to work against its successful revitalization. How East New York Became a Ghetto describes the shift of East New York from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to a largely black and Puerto Rican neighborhood and shows how the resulting racially biased policies caused the deterioration of this once flourishing area.
