Radiant and energetic abstractions of the human figure in the latest works from acclaimed painter Loie Hollowell New York-based painter Loie Hollowell (born 1983) has evolved a dynamic vocabulary of dimensionality, color and geometric shape. Abstracting the human figure, Hollowell’s paintings explore the dualities of light, and volume and scale, blurring the lines between the illusory and the real. In particular, her latest body of work explores her relationship to different stages of her pregnancy from conception to birth to motherhood. Nonetheless, subject matter in Hollowell’s work often emerges through phenomenological encounter rather than narrative content, tapping the depth of the artist’s embodied experience. The Goldfish is a sumptuous, surreal exploration of femininity. The poet inhabits the voice of a goldfish through a series of linguistically experimental poems which plunge us into the glass bowl and invite us to gaze out. The poems are in turn sensual, spiky, and queasy, as the poet satirizes the patriarchy and issues a rallying cry for women broken down by society. Halfway through the book, the scope opens out to the world beyond the goldfish bowl, via the story of a free spirit passing through customs, a paean "to our white husbands", and a letter which heals old wounds.

Myasthenia gravis (MG), an acquired immune syndrome affecting proteins at the neuromuscular junction, causes significant muscular functional impairment and can compromise patients’ quality of life, including fatigue, disability, and increased mortality rates. Continued efforts in the last decades have begun to produce significant progress in our understanding of this rare condition, yet considerable challenges remain for improving diagnosis and developing effective treatments for MG. The present volume comprises papers stemming from the “12th International Conference on Myasthenia Gravis and Related Disorders,” held May 21–23, 2012 at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City. The papers collected in this first of two Annals volumes highlight some of the key developments in neuroscience and immunology in MG and related syndromes presented at the conference, including structure and function of the neuromuscular junction, advances in immunology and their relationship to myasthenia gravis, clinical and laboratory developments, outcome measurements and clinical trial development, and animal models of neuromuscular junction disease.
