Schiffer Publishing Ltd Lacquered Boxes
Exquisitely painted, small, round, papier-mƒch‚ and lacquer boxes are sought after today for their beauty and the high level of craftsmanship they demonstrate. For the many admirers of these boxes, and students of the European cultural society in which they were made (in the early part of the nineteenth century), Detley Richter has written this careful account of the artistic, manufacturing, and commercial climates which were combined in the production of lacquered boxes. His well-researched text and over 350 illustrations are arranged into chapters which explain the manufacturing and artistic processes, important makers and their signatures, various uses, leading collections, and evolving traditions of the boxes in German, French, English, Russian, and other societies. That lacquered boxes are recognized as things of beauty is apparent in the many color pictures. That they are the products of highly sophisticated social influences becomes apparent when reading the author's analysis and conclusions. This is a wonderful new contribution to information on the decorative arts.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Coffee and Coffee Houses
Here's a whole new insight on that part of the day so common we usually take it for granted. In 1511 the first of many decrees had been issued banning coffee consumption, but nothing could halt the spread of the drink. The replacement for morning soup originated in Abyssinia, and rapidly made its way via Mecca and Istanbul to nearly every country-a worldwide epidemic of coffeemania. Coffee plantations spread over four continents, and coffee became the subject of political and social conflict on an international scale. It also created a new institution: the coffee-house-a meeting place of the various social strata, creating a cultural forum. Coffee-houses from around the world and down the ages are introduced and described here in terms of their cultural and historical significance-the coffee stall, the taverne a la mode, the coffee salon, the Cafe-Konditorei, the luxury cafe, the political coffee-house, the artists' cafe, the proletarian coffee-house, the ‚migr‚ cafe, coffee bar, jazz cafe, the cafe theater and many others. Pour your own steaming mug and take the time to enjoy this fascinating exploration.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Maritime Casualties: Causes and Consequences
Since the Titanic disaster of 1912, the horrors of major maritime casualties have prompted international conventions and domestic legislation, but the link between events and outcomes (which are often separated by many years) is rarely understood by those working in the maritime industry. This book, the only comprehensive guide to this link, sets forth the major casualties of the last hundred years and explains resulting regulatory changes. Taking a macro-level view, it describes the trends and reactions across decades, and how, over time, focus has shifted from equipment failures to people and their behaviors as the primary cause of maritime casualties. Timely and thorough, it also explores the alarming increase in the criminalization of maritime accidents, especially the relatively recent reclassification of pollution incidents as “environmental crimes.” This book offers broad insight to the history, laws, and conventions that regulate worldwide commercial maritime activity.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Making Decoys: The Century Old Way
A century ago, great flocks of waterfowl darkened the skies, and duck hunting had primarily one purpose: to put food on the table. In Making Decoys, authors Grayson Chesser and Curtis Badger help you perpetuate the tradition started by these old-time carvers by teaching you to hand make the simple yet functional decoys of yesteryear. Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Rumrunners of the Roaring Twenties
When Prohibition was the law, Chesapeake Bay was a smuggler’s paradise. Rogues of all types transported boatloads of forbidden liquor in the days when America experimented with forced, and unforeseeable, temperance. In a style reminiscent of the era it describes, Eric Mills brings to life the world of mobster and preacher, rumrunner and revenue man, moonshine and “real McCoy.” It was a whiskey-soaked age that was supposed to be dry. Prohibition may have been the law of the land, but the Chesapeake Bay country was awash in illegal alcohol. The marshes were teeming with hidden stills, and bootleg liquor was smuggled throughout the waterways and adjoining countryside by daring men in fast boats and faster cars. Chesapeake Rumrunners of the Roaring Twenties is a saga of people—watermen and steamer captains, mob racketeers and “legitimate” businessmen—all of them wanting part of the action. In the maze of bay waters, boats played a key role in that action, many disguised as workboats but built for speed and the ability to outmaneuver the law. On the other side, Billy Sunday and an army of temperance crusaders campaigned tirelessly to encourage Prohibition, while federal agents and Coast Guardsmen shared the impossible task of enforcing it. Using a mix of news reports, government records, and local lore, the author has written a fascinating account of a memorable chapter in Chesapeake history.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Twilight on the Bay: The Excursion Boat Empire of B.B. Wills
Twilight on the Bay: The Excursion Boat Empire of B. B. Wills tells the story of one man’s effort to sail against the tide. In 1934 when Benjamin Bowling Wills purchased a fifty-year-old Hudson River steamboat to bring passengers to an amusement park he owned on the Potomac River south of Washington, D.C., even he didn’t realize that he would soon abandon the amusement park and spend the next thirty-odd years running excursion boats in Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and even Houston, Texas. Relying on the private papers and correspondence of B. B. Wills himself, the author traces the evolution of Wills’s empire from the Potomac River on to the Chesapeake Bay—and eventually to cities up and down the East.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Waters: : Four Centuries of Controversy, Concern, and Legislation
Although media reports suggest that there always has been public concern over the health of the Chesapeake Bay, this is a fairly recent phenomenon. For centuries people saw the bay as a bottomless sink for waste products—a natural decomposer with the ability to freshen itself with ocean inflows. Not until human health and livelihood seemed threatened did people begin to think seriously about management by such methods as treating sewage and limiting seafood harvests. Chesapeake Waters chronicles four centuries of public attitudes about the bay—and legislative responses to them—from 1607, the date of the first English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, to the close of the twentieth century. In the last few decades, wide-reaching measures by federal and local governments have influenced how people use the bay: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency completed a massive study of bay quality; the Chesapeake Bay Program was launched; the Critical Area Protection Act went into effect. The authors make sense of these complex programs, place them in historical context, and explain how they have improved the quality of bay waters. Chesapeake Waters is as much about the power of public perception as it is about efforts to oversee bay water quality. In a work rich with anecdotes and historical art and photos, the authors relate how human attitudes and ideas have shaped four hundred years of decisions about the Chesapeake Bay.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Steamboats: Vanished Fleet
This book portrays the steamboat era on the Chesapeake (1813–1963), which matched the glamour and excitement of the steamboats on the Mississippi. The book begins with the building of the first steamboat on the bay, in the shadow of a bitter struggle over a monopoly on the Delaware and the Chesapeake. It continues with stories of the genius of early engine builders, the legends arising from dramatic steamboat disasters, spirited adventures of the Civil War, the excitement of steamboat excursions and resorts, the personalities of many steamboats and their masters, the railroad’s near achievement of a monopoly on the bay, and the denouement when trucks and automobiles eclipsed the role of the steamboat. Running through David Holly’s Chesapeake Steamboats: Vanished Fleet is a theme of ghostliness. He is clearly enchanted by the memories of the steamboats and conveys aptly the excitement of the steamboat era. With vivid descriptions he sets the scene for his narration of the history of the steamboat on the Chesapeake. A particular highlight is the account of the steamer Columbus, which was built in 1828 and burned and sank in 1850 near the mouth of the Potomac River. In the early 1990s a project was mounted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other organizations to recover artifacts from the wreck. Diving to a depth of sixty feet, at times in near darkness, the archeological team resurrected important components of the ship’s crosshead engine—the only one known to exist. David Holly’s narrative of the Columbus, his schematic of its engine extrapolated from recovered artifacts and his description of the engine’s operation record this important contribution to maritime history. His absorbing tales of the steamboat’s place in the life of the Chesapeake may stand as a legacy in the region and the country’s history.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks
Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks documents the skipjack and its role in the oyster dredging industry, describing the natural and manmade disasters that affected the trade, including the August storm of 1933 that swept vessels into pastures; ice-locked harbors that led to the idea of dredging through the ice with sleighs, cars, and trucks; and the Great Depression that crushed the oyster market overnight and forced many to abandon their vessels and way of life. The history of the skipjack, a vessel type that has only existed for about a hundred years, is seen here primarily through the eyes of the men who lived it. Author Vojtech interviewed some thirty captains, former captains, crew members, and relatives of those who worked the boats, to recreate the events that took place between 1917 and 1993. The early years were reconstructed through research into Maryland’s dredging records and contemporary newspapers accounts. Today, disease and other environmental hazards affecting the oyster have made the commercial future of the skipjacks on the bay extremely uncertain, underscoring the need to record the lore of those who manned this diminishing fleet and to emphasize the vessel’s place in the history of the Chesapeake region. In this readable account, skipjack captains and crews vividly recall their personal troubles and near disasters as well as more widespread hardships that watermen have faced: storms that swept vessels into pastures, long cold spells when they were forced to dredge through the ice with sleighs (and later automobiles), and the Great Depression that crushed the oyster market overnight. More than anything, though, this is a story of men who loved to sail and who often risked their lives, balanced on the edge of danger, to harvest the Chesapeake’s most valuable crop—the oyster.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Learn to Navigate by the Tutorial System Developed at Harvard
This book is written for the mariner who wants to learn the concepts of piloting and navigation, and do more than merely follow a closely prescribed set of rules. While the authors have supplied guidance in the practical matters, such as reading the Almanac and carrying out sight reductions (there are reduction forms in the appendices), they have also provided an understanding of the principles so the sailor can invent new methods when required. Readers are expected to be active participants, and there are many exercises designed to help them along the way. What makes this book different from most others is its focus on three methods used in a Harvard freshman tutorial course: confrontation with misconceptions, definitions based on procedures, and the use of imaginary scenarios. The authors feel these are keys to learning, as they are much more powerful than memorization of rules and will prepare the sailor to handle situations that are not in any textbook. Whitney and Wright have directed their writing to the sailor who is interested in the principles but not particularly comfortable with geometry.

Because shorebird hunting ended in the early 1900s, many shorebird decoys are quite rare and collectible. Beautiful color photographs of more than two hundred decoys highlight this carefully documented book. Other facets of the topic covered here include factory-produced decoys, tips on collecting decoys and avoiding fakes, and the use of X-ray, xerography, and other scientific methods to authenticate decoys.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Dockmanship
Dockmanship, according to author Bell, is “the art, skill, and practice of safely berthing and unberthing a vessel.” Anyone who has ever spent time observing the action at a marina or boat ramp will concede that the docking practiced by many recreational boaters today can hardly be considered an “art.” Here is a book that provides the information to turn any skipper—even a novice—into a master of docking. Captains who feel they already perform well behind the helm will enjoy reviewing the standard and advanced techniques contained in this easily understood manual. The basics of rudders, propellers, lines, and fenders used on small to medium-sized boats are completely explored. For each type of propulsion (inboard, outboard, single-screw, double-screw, and sail), techniques are described for maneuvering port side to, starboard side to, stern in, and bow in, and for getting away and handling the boat in close quarters. The author also clarifies the effects of wind and current.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The James Adams Floating Theatre
The boat on which Edna Ferber based her famous novel brought excitement and entertainment to isolated small towns up and down the East Coast in early twentieth-century America. The builder of the boat, James E. Adams, was a farmer from Michigan who taught himself to be a circus aerialist, started and prospered with his own carnival company, and, when retirement proved boring, decided to build a showboat. The book traces the history of the James Adams from its inception until its demise twenty-seven years later, a tale that includes fires, sinkings, a shooting, arrests, and several deaths.
