Museum Tusculanum Press Mellem sundhed og sygdom: Om fortid, fremskridt og virkelige læger. En narrativ kulturanalyse
"For a couple of years in this period, there was a true physician in Præstø as Jens Kofod practised here from 1792 until 1794 when he became a medical officer of health and Præstø had to be content with a surgeon as before.". This quote is taken from one of the principal works of the Danish history of medicine, published in 1873 by physician and medicine historian J V C Ingerslev, and it constitutes the starting point of Birgitte Rørbye's study of how the Danish medical profession of physicians through a couple of centuries have been able to construct an authoritative narrative of themselves as the 'true physicians' of the Danish public health service. By means of a narrative cultural study of writings on the history of medicine and other historical sources, Birgitte Rørbye uncovers the narrative of the 'true physicians' which has resulted in the exclusion of other occupational groups and schemes of things from the official and approved public health system on account of being 'alternative'. What is meant by the term 'true physician'? Is it a valid term with regards to varying times and societies? What was a 'true physician' in the years 1494, 1594, 1694, 1794, 1894, 1994? The answer depends both on the story and on who tells it. Birgitte Rørbye's new and different story caters for physicians, historians, cultural scholars and others interested in the history of medicine.

Princeton University Press Convolution and Equidistribution: Sato-Tate Theorems for Finite-Field Mellin Transforms (AM-180)
Convolution and Equidistribution explores an important aspect of number theory--the theory of exponential sums over finite fields and their Mellin transforms--from a new, categorical point of view. The book presents fundamentally important results and a plethora of examples, opening up new directions in the subject. The finite-field Mellin transform (of a function on the multiplicative group of a finite field) is defined by summing that function against variable multiplicative characters. The basic question considered in the book is how the values of the Mellin transform are distributed (in a probabilistic sense), in cases where the input function is suitably algebro-geometric. This question is answered by the book's main theorem, using a mixture of geometric, categorical, and group-theoretic methods. By providing a new framework for studying Mellin transforms over finite fields, this book opens up a new way for researchers to further explore the subject.

Indiana University Press The Mellah of Marrakesh: Jewish and Muslim Space in Morocco's Red City
"[The Mellah of Marrakesh] captures the vibrancy of Jewish society in Marrakesh in the tumultuous last decades prior to colonial rule and in the first decades of life in the colonial era. Although focused on the Jewish community, it offers a compelling portrait of the political, social, and economic issues confronting all of Morocco and sets a new standard for urban social history." —Dale F. EickelmanWeaving together threads from Jewish history and Islamic urban studies, The Mellah of Marrakesh situates the history of what was once the largest Jewish quarter in the Arab world in its proper historical and geographical contexts. Although framed by coverage of both earlier and later periods, the book focuses on the late 19th century, a time when both the vibrancy of the mellah and the tenacity of longstanding patterns of inter-communal relations that took place within its walls were being severely tested. How local Jews and Muslims, as well as resident Europeans lived the big political, economic, and social changes of the pre- and early colonial periods is reconstructed in Emily Gottreich's vivid narrative.Published with the generous support of the Koret Foundation.

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Unmaking the East India Company: British Art and Political Reform in Colonial India, c. 1813-1858
Illuminates how new modes of artistic production in colonial India shaped the British state’s nationalisation of the East India Company, transforming the relationship between nation and empire This pioneering book explores how art shaped the nationalisation of the East India Company between the loss of its primary monopoly in 1813 and its ultimate liquidation in 1858. Challenging the idea that parliament drove political reform, it argues instead that the Company’s political legitimacy was destabilised by novel modes of artistic production in colonial India. New artistic forms and practices—the result of new technologies like lithography and steam navigation, middle-class print formats like the periodical, the scrapbook and the literary annual, as well as the prevalence of amateur sketching among Company employees—reconfigured the colonial regime’s racial boundaries and techniques of governance. They flourished within transimperial networks, integrating middle-class societies with new political convictions and moral disciplines, and thereby eroding the aristocratic corporate cultures that had previously structured colonial authority in India. Unmaking the East India Company contributes to a reassessment of British art as a global, corporate and intrinsically imperial phenomenon—highlighting the role of overlooked media, artistic styles and print formats in crafting those distinctions of power and identity that defined ‘Britishness’ across the world. Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Illuminating Natural History: The Art and Science of Mark Catesby
The life and art of the 18th-century naturalist Mark Catesby, and his pioneering work depicting the flora and fauna of North America, are explored in vibrant detail This book explores the life and work of the celebrated eighteenth-century English naturalist, explorer, artist and author Mark Catesby (1683–1749). During Catesby’s lifetime, science was poised to shift from a world of amateur virtuosi to one of professional experts. Working against a backdrop of global travel that incorporated collecting and direct observation of nature, Catesby spent two prolonged periods in the New World – in Virginia (1712–19) and South Carolina and the Bahamas (1722–6). In his majestic two-volume Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1731–43), esteemed by his contemporary John Bartram as ‘an ornament for the finest library in the world’, he reflected the excitement, drama and beauty of the natural world. Interweaving elements of art history, history of science, natural history illustration, painting materials, book history, paper studies, garden history and colonial history, this meticulously researched volume brings together a wealth of unpublished images as well as newly discovered letters by Catesby, which, with their first-hand accounts of his collecting and encounters in the wild, bring the story of this extraordinary pioneer naturalist vividly to life.Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Lucie Rie: Modernist Potter
The life and legacy of brilliant but elusive potter Lucie Rie is investigated through interviews, letters and the analysis of her elegant, modernist vessels Lucie Rie (1902–1995), one of the 20th century's most celebrated and iconic potters, combined an acute understanding of modernism with the skills of her chosen craft. Emmanuel Cooper, a distinguished potter who knew Rie, interviewed many of her friends and acquaintances to produce this complete and detailed account of Rie's life and work. The author was given unrestricted access by the Rie estate to previously unpublished letters and other material, which provide fascinating new insights into her life and work and allowed him to reevaluate Rie's creative output within the broader context of modernism and the emergence of the studio pottery movement in Britain. ‘It [is] unlikely that this biography of Rie will ever be surpassed.’ —Frances Spalding, Literary Review‘A precious gift, from the only man who could have written it.’ —Glenn Adamson, Crafts MagazineDistributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
