Ambitious in scope, Rethinking Church, State, and Modernity considers some central concepts in the sociology and history of religion and, simultaneously, how Canada's religious experience is distinctive in the modern world. The contributors to this volume challenge the institutional approach that stresses a strict division between "church" and "state", which seems inappropriate in late-modern and post-modern scenarios. Rather, the authors favour an interpretation that is marked more by fluidity than fixity. Canada, which stands somewher between the largely secularised Europe and the relatively religious United States, is well situated as a testing ground for the leading conceptions of the fate of religion in modern and postmodern societies. The book focuses mainly on Christianity, looking at what is distinctive about Canadian situations, and discusses the concomitant decline of some religious groups and the ongoing vitality of others in an increasingly multi-faith and globalized society. The first publication on British artist Marguerite Horner presents her monochromatic, radiant and accomplished paintings inspired by a trip to Beachwood Canyon, California, and produced in 2023. Numinous presents the monochromatic, radiant and accomplished paintings of British artist Marguerite Horner (b. 1954), inspired by a trip to Beachwood Canyon, California, and produced in 2023. The twenty-one watercolours and two oil paintings which make up the series of the same name depict flat expanses of sand, the sunlit sea, cacti, the silhouettes of distant people seen from above and occasionally American highways. They were first exhibited at the Crypt in St Marylebone Parish Church, London, in October 2023. The first publication on Horner’s work features a foreword by publisher and writer Matt Price, describing the charged, luminous moments depicted in the Numinous series and the significance of the natural world in the artworks. In his essay, multidisciplinary scholar Dr Matthew Holman discusses the setting of California and Horner’s painting style within the context of British and American painting and her previous bodies of work. Her 2017 series Keep Me Safe portrayed her experiences of driving the Chiswick Comboni Missionary Sisters to the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp while her 2022 exhibition Back to Verve showed small-town life and the eerie quiet of suburbia. Numinous builds on her previous series to further explore ideas of landscape, human behaviour and the metaphysical. Through her watercolours and oil paintings, Horner explores the ‘numinous’, a concept defined by Lutheran theologian Rudolf Otto that indicates the presence of divinity. Rudolf Steiner’s search for the words and style to bring to expression a contemporary spiritual worldview epitomises this. In seven organically developing chapters, this little book presents Martina Maria Sam’s long-standing research into this subject. As a writer, editor and lecturer she observed the increasing difficulty that many people – particularly those with an academic training – have with Steiner’s style. However, this style was something that Rudolf Steiner developed very deliberately. As she states: ‘What was most important for me in this was to point out Rudolf Steiner’s intentions in his specific and often original linguistic forms and, consequently, to create the introductory basis for a deeper understanding.’ Gaining such understanding, she says, can in turn enable us to develop insight into the spirit. In A Diabolical Voice, Justine L. Trombley traces the afterlife of the Mirror of Simple Souls, which circulated anonymously for two centuries in four languages, though not without controversy or condemnation. Widely recognized as one of the most unusual and important mystical treatises of the late Middle Ages, the Mirror was condemned in Paris in 1310 as a heretical work, and its author, Marguerite Porete, was burned at the stake. Trombley identifies alongside the work's increasing positive reception a parallel trend of opposition and condemnation centered specifically around its Latin translation. She's discovered fourteenth- and fifteenth-century theologians, canon lawyers, inquisitors, and other churchmen who were entirely ignorant of the Mirror's author and its condemnation and saw in the work dangerous heresies that demanded refutation and condemnation of their own. Using new evidence from the Mirror's largely overlooked Latin manuscript tradition, A Diabolical Voice charts the range of negative reactions to the Mirror, from confiscations and physical destruction to academic refutations and vicious denunciations of its supposedly fiendish doctrines. This parallel story of opposition shows how heresy remained an integral part of the Mirror's history well beyond the events of 1310, revealing how seriously churchmen took Marguerite Porete's ideas on their own terms, in contexts entirely removed from Marguerite's identity and her fate.
