Fordham University Press Reporting World War II
This set of essays offers new insights into the journalistic process and the pressures American front-line reporters experienced covering World War II. Transmitting stories through cable or couriers remained expensive and often required the cooperation of foreign governments and the American armed forces. Initially, reporters from a neutral America documented the early victories by Nazi Germany and the Soviet invasion of Finland. Not all journalists strove for objectivity. During her time reporting from Ireland, Helen Kirkpatrick remained a fierce critic of that country’s neutrality. Once the United States joined the fight after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, American journalists supported the struggle against the Axis powers, but this volume will show that reporters, even when members of the army sponsored newspaper, Stars and Stripes were not mere ciphers of the official line. African American reporters Roi Ottley and Ollie Stewart worked to bolster the morale of Black GIs and undermined the institutional racism endemic to the American war effort. Women front-line reporters are given their due in this volume examining the struggles to overcome gender bias by describing triumphs of Thérèse Mabel Bonney, Iris Carpenter, Lee Carson, and Anne Stringer. The line between public relations and journalism could be a fine one as reflected by the U.S. Marine Corps’ creating its own network of Marine correspondents who reported on the Pacific island campaigns and had their work published by American media outlets. Despite the pressures of censorship, the best American reporters strove for accuracy in reporting the facts even when dependent on official communiqués issued by the military. Many wartime reporters, even when covering major turning points, sought to embrace a reporting style that recorded the experiences of average soldiers. Often associated with Ernie Pyle and Bill Mauldin, the embrace of the human-interest story served as one of the enduring legacies of the conflict. Despite the importance of American war reporting in shaping perceptions of the war on the home front as well as shaping the historical narrative of the conflict, this work underscores how there is more to learn. Readers will gain from this work a new appreciation of the contribution of American journalists in writing the first version of history of the global struggle against Nazi Germany, imperial Japan, and fascist Italy.

New Village Press Homeboy Came to Orange: A Story of People's Power
The story of a union organizer who found a second career in community organizing and helped a Jim Crow city become a better place. Ernest Thompson dedicated his life to organizing the powerless. This lively, illustrated personal narrative of his work shows the great contribution that people’s coalitions can make to the struggle for equality and freedom. Thompson cut his teeth organizing one of the great industrial unions, the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America, and brought his organizing skills and commitment to coalition building to Orange, New Jersey. He built a strong organization and skillfully led fights for school desegregation, black political representation, and strong government in a city he initially thought of as a “dirty Jim Crow town going nowhere.” Thompson came to love the City of Orange and its caring citizens, seeing in its struggles a microcosm of America. This story of people’s power is meant for all who struggle for human rights, economic opportunity, decent housing, effective education, and a chance for children to have a better life. Ernest Thompson (1906-1971) grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, on a farm that had been given to his family at the end of the Civil War. The family was very poor and oppressed by racist practices. Thompson was determined to get away and to obtain power. He migrated to Jersey City, where he became part of the union organizing movement that built the Congress of Industrial Unions (CIO). He became the first African American to hold a fulltime organizing position with his union, the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE). He eventually headed UE’s innovative Fair Employment Practices program and fought for equal rights and pay for women and minority workers. Thompson also helped build the National Negro Labor Council, 1951-1956, and served as its director of organizing. In 1956, under the onslaught of the McCarthy era, UE was split in two, and Thompson lost his job. His wife, Margaret Thompson, brought the local school segregation to his attention. Ernie “Home” Thompson organized to desegregate the regional schools, building strong coalitions and political power for the black community that ultimately served all the people of Orange.

They are Ben Hogan’s techniques—as described to me, piece by piece, by fascinated professional golfers who studied Hogan, or who had at least observed him with an analytical eye. As Kafka said, ‘The writer has nothing to say. He just presents evidence.’ On the Hogan topic, I had the privilege of interviewing Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Alvie Thompson, George Knudson, and Mike Souchak. I caddied for Moe Norman, Ted Kroll, Jay Hebert, Bing Crosby, and Babe Didrickson Zaharias. Then I was lucky enough to play with Stan Leonard, Moe Norman, Davis Love III, Dick Zokol, Jim Thorpe, Paul Azinger, Corey Pavin, Tom Kite, Ernie Brown, Brad Faxon, Jim Furyk, Joey Sindelar, and Bob Hope—all of whom had observations and stories about Ben Hogan. These experiences were fortuitous and pleasurable. From these informed sources I gathered snippets of detailed information. Their insights were always in their own language, which was mostly slang terminology with perhaps a demonstration thrown if they had the time: ‘wringing the towel,’ ‘changing the chuck on the lever,’ ‘buckling the wrist,’ ‘rolling the wrist,’ ‘arch and twist,’ ‘keep a flat wrist’ ‘square to square.’ It was my job to sift through the verbiage, and to put it into understandable, and universal, anatomical terms for reliable transmission. In the hopes of persuading you to give Hogan’s short game system an honest try, I will get into the good stuff as quickly as possible

Troubador Publishing No Country for Old Men
Steven Darlington widowed and with his sons in the Antipodes, is feeling rather stuck in a rut in his West Country town. Trawling the internet he finds Yeats' poem Sailing to Byzantium, the words of which seem to strike a chord. Further meandering on the internet brings up someone he had known fifty years earlier in the northern city of Cleadonbridge, where he was a student. A reunion of the fiftieth anniversary of his group's graduation is planned for the following year, but Steven decides to visit the city earlier. Events come crowding in; he imagines that he can build a new life in Cleadonbridge and that he can help to reinvigorate the Anglo-Catholic church he attended. However, all comes to naught and he is forced to accept that, in the words of the poem, Cleadonbridge is indeed No Country For Old Men. Part of the novel describes the reunion and there is a tantalising ending.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd White Ironstone China: Plate Identification Guide 1840-1890
The identification of English white ironstone plates is made far easier through this new book. Organized according to the shape names, the 327 color photographs and 252 drawings of plates, rims, potters’ marks and registry marks are easy to compare. Copper Lustre and Tea Leaf decorations are included. Because few written records from the manufacturers are available to help analyze these plates, made in large quantities for export primarily to the United States between about 1840 and 1890, this study will be an important reference for identification and comparisons. It is both comprehensive and easy to use, providing an important tool for collectors, dealers, curators, designers, auctioneers, and historians for analyzing Victorian cultural history.

Amberley Publishing Plymouth at Work: People and Industries Through the Years
The city of Plymouth, on the south coast of Devon, has been a maritime settlement since its earliest days. A trading port in Roman and Saxon times, fishing and boatbuilding have also been mainstays of the local industry for centuries. The original town of Plymouth was historically the commercial shipping and passenger port - the Pilgrim Fathers left for the Americas from Plymouth in 1620 - and the neighbouring town of Devonport, which has now merged with Plymouth, has been associated with the Royal Navy for the last three centuries. This era saw a massive rise in the dockyard, probably peaking during the Second World War when it became the target for heavy aerial bombardment. Although it is now in decline, Devonport Dockyard is still a major naval shipyard and the only naval base in Britain that refits nuclear submarines. Today, although many of the traditional industries have declined or closed, Plymouth is home to severalhigh-tech industries, including Plessey Semiconductors. Plymouth at Work explores the working life of this city in Devon and its people, and the industries that have characterised it. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this city.

University of Washington Press Landscape Traveled by Coyote and Crane: The World of the Schitsu'umsh
Anthropologist Rodney Frey culminates a decade of work with the Schitsu’umsh (the Coeur d’Alene Indians of Idaho) in this portrait of the unique bonds between a people and the landscape of their traditional homeland. The result of an intensive collaboration between investigator and Native people, the book includes many traditional stories that invite the reader’s participation in the world of the Schitsu’umsh. The Schitsu’umsh landscape of lake and mountains is described with a richness that emphasizes its essential material and spiritual qualities. The historical trauma of the Schitsu’umsh, stemming from their nineteenth-century contacts with Euro-American culture, is given dramatic weight. Nonetheless, examples of adaptation and continuity in traditional cultural expression, rather than destruction and discontinuity, are the most conspicuous features of this vivid ethnographic portrait. Drawing on pivotal oral traditions, Frey mirrors the Schitsu’umsh world view in his organization and presentation of ethnographic material. He uses first-person accounts by his Native consultants to convey crucial cultural perspectives and practices. Because of its unusual methodology, Landscape Traveled by Coyote and Crane is likely to become a model for future work with Native American peoples, within the Plateau region and beyond.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Sea Salt Aerosol Production: Mechanisms, Methods, Measurements, and Models
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 152.Sea salt aerosol (SSA) exerts a major influence over a broad reach of geophysics. It is important to the physics and chemistry of the marine atmosphere and to marine geochemistry and biogeochemistry generally. It affects visibility, remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry, and air quality. Sea salt aerosol particles interact with other atmospheric gaseous and aerosol constituents by acting as sinks for condensable gases and suppressing new particle formation, thus influencing the size distribution of these other aerosols and more broadly influencing the geochemical cycles of substances with which they interact. As the key aerosol constituent over much of Earth's surface at present, and all the more so in pre-industrial times, SSA is central to description of Earth's aerosol burden.
