Hebrew Union College Press,U.S. Let Me Continue to Speak the Truth: Bertha Pappenheim as Author and Activist
In 1953, Freud biographer Ernest Jones revealed that the famous hysteric Anna O. was really Bertha Pappenheim (1859-1936), the prolific author, German-Jewish feminist, pioneering social worker, and activist. Elizabeth Loentz directs attention away from the young woman who arguably invented the talking cure and back to Pappenheim and her post-Anna O. achievements. Her writings, especially, reveal her to be one of the most versatile, productive, influential, and controversial Jewish thinkers and leaders of her time. Pappenheim's oeuvre includes stories, plays, poems, prayers, travel literature, letters, essays, speeches, and aphorisms. She translated Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Women as well as the Memoirs of Gluckel of Hamelnand other Old Yiddish texts into German. She was discussed as both writer and newsmaker in German-Jewish newspapers of every religious and political affiliation and in German feminist publications. As founder and leader of the League of Jewish Women in Germany and the international League of Jewish Women, she was at the forefront of the campaign to combat human trafficking and forced prostitution. A pioneer of modern Jewish social work, she founded a home for at-risk girls and unwed mothers and advocated on behalf of Jewish women, children, refugees, and immigrants. Her accomplishments are all the more remarkable because she attained them after struggling to recover from the debilitating mental illness chronicled in Freud and Breuer's Studies on Hysteria(1895). Loentz examines how Pappenheim engaged, in words and deeds, with the key political, social, and cultural issues concerning German Jewry in the early decades of the twentieth century: the status of the Yiddish language, Zionism, the conversion epidemic, responses to the plight of Eastern European Jews, and Jewish spirituality. Pappenheim's unique approach to each of these issues balanced allegiances to feminism, the Jewish religion, and German culture. Loentz also explores how biographers and artists have rediscovered Pappenheim, rewritten her life story, and renegotiated her identity.

Savas Beatie J. E. B. Stuart
Fifteen years have passed since the publication of the last biography of Jeb Stuart. Several appeared during the last century lauding his contributions to Confederate fortunes in the Eastern Theater. Each follows a familiar tradition established by hero-worshipping subordinates portraying its subject as a model of chivalric conduct with a romantic's outlook on life and a sense of fair dealing and goodwill, even toward his enemy. J. E. B. Stuart: The Soldier and the Man, by award-winning author Edward Longacre, is the first balanced, detailed, and thoroughly scrutinized study of the life and service of the Civil War's most famous cavalryman. Long known to scholars and history buffs alike as The Beau Sabreur of the Confederacy, James Ewell Brown Stuart of Virginia was possessed of many gifts, personally and professionally, and led the Army of Northern Virginia's cavalry to the all-but-complete satisfaction of his superiors. Stuart, insisted Robert E. Lee, never brought me a piece of fa

Penguin Books Ltd English Pastoral: An Inheritance - The Sunday Times bestseller from the author of The Shepherd's Life
THE SUNDAY TIMES NATURE BOOK OF THE YEARThe new bestseller from the author of The Shepherd's Life'A beautifully written story of a family, a home and a changing landscape' Nigel Slater As a boy, James Rebanks's grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in the Lake District hills was part of an ancient agricultural landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock, and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognisable. The men and women had vanished from the fields; the old stone barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song. English Pastoral is the story of an inheritance: one that affects us all. It tells of how rural landscapes around the world were brought close to collapse, and the age-old rhythms of work, weather, community and wild things were lost. And yet this elegy from the northern fells is also a song of hope: of how, guided by the past, one farmer began to salvage a tiny corner of England that was now his, doing his best to restore the life that had vanished and to leave a legacy for the future. This is a book about what it means to have love and pride in a place, and how, against all the odds, it may still be possible to build a new pastoral: not a utopia, but somewhere decent for us all.'A heartfelt book and one that dares to hope' Alan Bennett'A wonder of a book, fierce, tender, and beautiful' Helen MacdonaldWinner of the Wainwright PrizeWinner of the Fortnum & Mason Food Book of the YearShortlisted for the Orwell PrizeShortlisted for the Ondaatje Prize Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize

Taylor & Francis Ltd Individual Preferences in e-Learning
Trainers and educators ask: 'What personality types do best at e-learning; who really likes e-learning?' Better that they should ask: 'How can we make e-learning more appealing to more people?' E-learning is here to stay in the same way that the Internet is here to stay. The classroom, as a mass education tool, was an invention of the industrial age and we have made good use of it. E-learning is an invention of the information age but we have yet to properly realise its potential. Some of the steam has gone out of e-learning. Organizations have experienced problems with technology, variable content, poor course take-up and even greater drop-out. The problem is that what appeals to the organization, a mass training and development medium that can be used to train everyone at once, is at odds with - or at least ignorant of - the learning needs of the individual. Individual Preferences in e-Learning focuses on the process of e-learning, with the emphasis on learning and individual differences. With a firm rooting in previous research, in particular the author's in-depth knowledge of the MBTIâ„¢ functions, this book shows you how to make e-learning work for different personality types.

With its new definition of sculptural styling, performance, handling and innovative style, the E-Type or XKE series in the USA, created a car of global impact that remains a great classic of all time. WW Norton & Co The Beauty of Living: E. E. Cummings in the Great War
Intimate and richly detailed, The Beauty of Living begins with Cummings’s Cambridge, Massachusetts upbringing and his relationship with his socially progressive but domestically domineering father. It follows Cummings through his undergraduate experience at Harvard, where he fell into a circle of aspiring writers including John Dos Passos, who became a lifelong friend. Steeped in classical paganism and literary decadence, Cummings and his friends rode the explosion of Cubism, Futurism, Imagism and other “modern” movements in the arts. As the United States prepared to enter the First World War, Cummings volunteered as an ambulance driver, was shipped out to Paris and met his first love, Marie Louise Lallemand, who was working in Paris as a prostitute. Soon after reaching the front, however, he was unjustly imprisoned in a brutal French detention centre at La Ferté-Macé. Through this confrontation with arbitrary and sadistic authority, he found the courage to listen to his own voice. Probing an underexamined yet formative time in the poet’s life, this deeply researched account illuminates his ideas about love, justice, humanity and brutality. J. Alison Rosenblitt weaves together letters, journal entries and sketches with astute analyses of poems that span Cummings’ career, revealing the origins of one of the twentieth century’s most famous poets.

John Blake Publishing Ltd Talking With Psychopaths and Savages: Beyond Evil: From the UK's No. 1 True Crime author
'I wrapped duct tape around her mouth and her nose and watched her suffocate to death . . . then I went back to work' - former Colonel David Russell Williams of the Royal Canadian Air Force, 2010Sunday Times-bestselling author Christopher Berry-Dee is back with a companion volume that delves even deeper into the savage world of psychopaths and their hideous crimes. This time, however, he combines sections on killers whom he has known, interviewed or corresponded with, with studies of psychopathic serial killers from the past, including Peter Kürten, the 'Düsseldorf Monster', John Christie, responsible for the killings at 10 Rillington Place; and Neville Heath, a ladykiller in every sense of the word. The result is a chilling narrative that sets the forensic examination of killers and their crimes within the context of murder in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, an examination of the evil mind set against the insoluble problem of identifying psychopaths who kill. This is not a book for the squeamish, but it is undeniably fascinating in its portrayal of just what one human being will do to others - while all too often moving among us unnoticed and unhindered. If their crimes seem as incomprehensible as they are horrific, it is undeniably true that the world's most savage killers may be much closer than we think . . .

Little, Brown Book Group Suit: by the bestselling author of Sex/Life: 44 chapters about 4 men
44 CHAPTERS ABOUT 4 MEN, BB Easton's bestselling memoir, is the inspiration for Netflix's new series: Sex/Life. BB had so much fun writing her award-winning memoir that she decided to give each of her four men his own steamy standalone. This is book four - the hilarious, heart-warming tale of how BB finally got over her bad-boy phase and found her happily ever after with . . . gasp . . . a guy in a tie.'Since when are you into guys in ties? You only like guys who look like they rob guys in ties. At gunpoint.'It was true. My type had been well-established. There might as well have been a giant sign on my heart that said, 'Good Guys Need Not Apply'.Which is exactly why I had to friendzone Ken Easton. The man was a former football star, smelled like fresh laundry instead of stale cigarettes, and had more ties in his closet than tattoos on his knuckles. Pssh. BOR-ING.But the more I got to know my hunky study buddy, the more questions I came away with. Questions like: why doesn't he date? Why does he avoid human touch? Why does he hate all things fun and wonderful? The psychology student in me became obsessed with getting inside Ken's head, while the spoiled brat in me became obsessed with getting inside his heart. In 2003, I found the one thing I love more than bad boys . . .A good challenge.Find out why everyone's talking about B B Easton 'One I'm going to recommend over and over again.
