A semi-autobiographical novel portraying a frenetic and literary Zurich as the backdrop to the Dada movement In 1916, Hugo Ball (1886–1927) cofounded the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich and penned the "Dada Manifesto," launching what would become the Zurich Dada movement. That same year he completed his semi-autobiographical novel, Flametti, or The Dandyism of the Poor, which would be published two years later. Drawing from his pre-Dada period of struggle and poverty in the vaudeville circuit, Ball immerses us in the rise and fall of Max Flametti and his vaudeville company. Fishing in the local river to feed his company, dabbling in drugs, strolling through the vegetable market on the Gemüsebrücke in Zurich, ducking into a side street to avoid running into the police, Flametti marches through the pages of Ball’s novel passionately pursuing a career that culminates in the presentation of the theatrical extravaganza The Indians at the Krokodil in Zürich (a locale that still exists today as a Spanish restaurant). Overcoming odds and alternately averting, succumbing to and embracing financial ruin, Flametti ultimately emerges as a tragic figure--a Willy Loman of vaudeville. Where were Monet's famous "haystacks" located? Which position did he choose to paint the villas of Bordighera? Where was Alfred Sisley on the "Winter Morning" in 1874? And what does it look like there today? From 2016 onwards, photographer Christoph Irrgang traveled to the areas and places where Monet and other Impressionists painted. He researched and photographed the places where numerous works were created from the painters' perspective. The juxtaposition of the paintings with photographs from today reveal industrialization, modernization and urban development over the past 150 years, but also astonishing similarities. The photographs also provide a new and unique approach to the Impressionist paintings. You can see the authentic places that were in front of the painters more than a hundred years ago, and you can see the change that has happened since then. Photography and painting can be compared directly, and the interplay of eye and brush can be traced. However, the world-famous masterpieces also give their places a certain aura, and it is fascinating to see this magic flow into the reality of the present. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, historical subjects became some of the most popular topics for stage dramas of all kinds on both sides of the Atlantic. This collection of essays examines a number of extraordinary theatrical works in order to cast light on their role in shaping a popular interpretation of historical events. The medium of drama ensured that the telling of these histories – the French Revolution and the American War of Independence, for example, or the travels of Captain Cook and Christopher Columbus – were brought to life through words, music and spectacle. The scale of the productions was often ambitious: a water tank with model floating ships was deployed at Sadler’s Wells for the staging of the Siege of Gibraltar, and another production on the same theme used live cannons which set fire to the vessels in each performance. This illustrated volume, researched and written by experts in the field, explores contemporary theatrical documents (playbills, set designs, musical scores) and images (paintings, prints and illustrations) in seeking to explain what counted as history and historical truth for the writers, performers and audiences of these plays. Hermann Czech, born in 1936, is one of Austria’s most eminent and influential architects and theorists. This influence is based not only on his work as a designing architect, which extends to furniture, interiors, and exhibitions. Arthur Ripstein's lectures focus on the two bodies of rules governing war: the jus ad bellum, which regulates resort to armed force, and the jus in bello, which sets forth rules governing the conduct of armed force and applies equally to all parties. Ripstein argues that recognizing both sets of rules as distinctive prohibitions, rather than as permissions, can reconcile the supposed tension between them. He contends that the law and morality of war are in fact aligned, because the central wrong of war is that war is the condition which force decides.
