Ohio University Press Change and Continuity in Minangkabau: Local, Regional, and Historical Perspectives on West Sumatra
Social scientists have long recognized many apparent contradictions in the Minangkabau. The world’s largest matrilineal people, they are also strongly Islamic and, as a society, remarkably modern and outward looking. Focusing on Minangkabau proper, and treating several adjacent areas as well, this collection examines the resilience and adaptability of the Minangkabau in the face of outside political and economic pressures and of distortions in social science and legal theory. Individual studies address issues of kinship and other forms of social organization, ideology, and political and economic life. Together, they emphasize the integrity of Minangkabau social forms while revealing fascinating patterns of continuity and change in Minangkabau culture. This collection will be of particular interest to anthropologists specializing in Southeast Asia, but it will also be important reading for those concerned with the issue of change and continuity in the third world generally.

Equinox Publishing Ltd Surviving the Induction Years of Language Teaching: The Importance of Reflective Practice
Surviving The Induction Years of Language Teaching is unique to the language teaching profession because it outlines the detailed experiences of one ESL teacher during his first year and then during his third year to see what challenges he encountered during these important novice years. It is important for teacher educators, teachers and administrators to understand what novice teachers experience so that they can better be supported to become teachers for many more years to come. The results of this analysis will lead to the development of a comprehensive framework for the professional development of novice teachers through reflective practice that is grounded in the classroom realities of real teaching contexts so that they can develop beyond their novice years and become expert ESL teachers. In addition, the suggestions presented in this book can be operationalized as standards for future ESL/EFL teacher education and development programs worldwide.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Blackwell Guide to Kant's Ethics
THE BLACKWELL GUIDE TO KANT’S Ethics THE BLACKWELL GUIDES TO great Works “Hill has edited an excellent set of essays by both well-established and younger Kant scholars, each of which insightfully discusses fundamental themes and arguments in Kant’s moral philosophy. This collection not only contributes importantly to ongoing scholarship, but it will serve as a perfect companion to upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses that feature Kant’s ethics.” Mark Timmons, University of Arizona Late in the eighteenth century, Immanuel Kant published several influential works of moral philosophy, writings that even his staunchest critics acknowledge represent the efforts of one of the most profound thinkers of the modern age. Reflecting the philosopher’s increasing stature and a resurgence in innovative scholarship, The Blackwell Guide to Kant’s Ethics presents a collection of original essays that address a wide variety of topics crucial to our understanding of Kant’s moral philosophy and its implications. The essays’ broad range of ideas is ensured through contributions by both well-established Kant scholars and rising stars in the field. Readings serve to illuminate and put into perspective issues that Kant addressed in his later writings, including his idea of a good will and formulations of the Categorical Imperative, along with his concepts of virtue, duties to oneself, justice, punishment, and international relations. Further insights are garnered through extensive introductory commentary by the editor that put the essays in context. And in an original concluding essay, noted Kant scholar Arnulf Zweig shares some personal reflections on the enduring value of Kant’s ethics. Informed by impeccable scholarship, The Blackwell Guide to Kant’s Ethics is a thought-provoking new work that will enhance our understanding of Kant’s ethical theories while offering provocative insights into the mind of one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Western philosophy.

Easton Studio Press May Day at Yale,1970: Recollections: The Trial of Bobby Seale and the Black Panthers
This book comes from first hand experiences, both in word and in pictures. It offers a partial record of a community and an institution coming together to accommodate an event while deflecting its potential violence. The history of the New Haven Green bridges over four centuries. It has served as a place for worship, for grazing cattle, staging revolutions, witness to hangings, and various campaigns. On the day before and on May Day of 1970, Yale University and New Haven prepared to host an agitated congregation of young civil rights activists with a diverse list of causes, but focused mainly on freeing Bobby Seale, the Black Panther leader. This book gives a glimpse of that diversity; diverse in cause, attitude, and dress. Marked changes in mood evolved over the approximate 32 hours. Yale and New Haven could be proud of avoiding real violence and blood shed. Like an archeological record, it exhibits not only the New Haven Green on that one day, but marks a broader shift in direction for a county at large. For those who were there, it seems painfully near. For later generations, it is likely a remote abstraction.
