University of Minnesota Press People, Practice, Power: Digital Humanities outside the Center
An illuminating volume of critical essays charting the diverse territory of digital humanities scholarship The digital humanities have traditionally been considered to be the domain of only a small number of prominent and well-funded institutions. However, through a diverse range of critical essays, this volume serves to challenge and enlarge existing notions of how digital humanities research is being undertaken while also serving as a kind of alternative guide for how it can thrive within a wide variety of institutional spaces. Focusing on the complex infrastructure that undergirds the field of digital humanities, People, Practice, Power examines the various economic, social, and political factors that shape such academic endeavors. The multitude of perspectives comprising this collection offers both a much-needed critique of the existing structures for digital scholarship and the means to generate broader representation within the field. This collection provides a vital contribution to the realm of digital scholarly research and pedagogy in acknowledging the role that small liberal arts colleges, community colleges, historically black colleges and universities, and other underresourced institutions play in its advancement. Gathering together a range of voices both established and emergent, People, Practice, Power offers practitioners a self-reflexive examination of the current conditions under which the digital humanities are evolving, while helping to open up new sustainable pathways for its future. University of Minnesota Press The Future of Social Movement Research: Dynamics, Mechanisms, and Processes
Are the dynamics of contention changing? This is the question confronted by the contributors of this volume, among the most influential scholars in the field of social movements. The answers, arriving at a time of extraordinary worldwide turmoil, not only provide a wide-ranging and varied understanding of how social movements arise and persist, but also engender unanswered questions, pointing to new theoretical strands and fields of research. The Future of Social Movement Research asks: How are the dynamics of contention shaped by globalization? By societies that are becoming increasingly more individualized and diverse? By the spread of new communication technologies such as social media, cell phones, and the Internet? Why do some movements survive while others dissipate? Do local and global networks differ in nature? The authors’ essays explore such questions with reference to changes in three domains of contention: the demand of protest (changes in grievances and identities), the supply of protest (changes in organizations and networks), and how these changes affect the dynamics of mobilization. In doing so, they theorize and make empirically insightful how globalization, individualization, and virtualization create new grievances, new venues for action, new action forms, and new structures of contention. The resulting work—brought together through engaging discussions and debates between the contributors—is interdisciplinary and unusually broad in scope, constituting the most comprehensive overview of the dynamics of social movements available today. Little, Brown Book Group Speak My Language, and Other Stories: An Anthology of Gay Fiction
'There is something special about literature . . . that addresses our innermost sexual and amatory selves. Gay stories offer us vindication, fellowship, validation and a sense of shared identity that we need now as much as ever,' writes Stephen Fry in the foreword to this anthology. In this exciting new collection of gay short stories, we hear from authors imagining, surmising, and revealing aspects of gay life from a multitude of perspectives, ages, eras, locations, cultures and political climates. Contributors range from those emerging into a life of writing to those who have enjoyed international mainstream success. Some, such as Felice Picano, were pioneers of not only gay writing but also gay liberation itself. Others are recipients of world-class awards, including Vestal McIntyre, whose Lake Overturn: A Novel was named Editor's Choice by the New York Times Book Review and Out magazine, and a Best Book of 2009 by the Washington Post. It also won the Grub Street National Book Prize and Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction. The premise for stories included in this anthology was very simple - other than the stipulation that a major component of the story be in some way concerned with gay life, there were no restrictions. The aim was to bring together fictional reflections of gay life from the minds of authors approaching 'gay' from very different angles. As a result, genres in this collection range from action to sci-fi, from thriller to fantasy. The stories are set in countries including Australia, Cuba, England, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Portugal, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the USA. The youngest contributor is in his twenties, the oldest in his eighties.Readers will find themselves immersed in an engaging set of stories remarkably different from one another, yet, as Stephen Fry notes, offering a surprising sense of shared identity. With stories by: Nick Alexander; Tim Ashley; James Robert Baker; Damian Barr; Neil Bartlett; Sebastian Beaumont; Scott Brown; Michael Carroll; Robert Cochrane; Alfred Corn; Neal Drinnan; Royston Ellis; Nigel Fairs; Hugh Fleetwood; Ronald Frame; Patrick Gale; Damon Galgut; John R. ACC Art Books Twentieth Century Textiles
Presents a selection of more than 100 furnishing textiles and designs that range from a spectacular printed hanging designed by the Wiener Werkstätte artist, Dagobert Peche, between 1911 and 1918, to a series of dramatic woven, silk and metal wall coverings Les Colombes designed by Henri Stephany for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco period is well represented by the works of Raoul Dufy, Alberto Lorenzi, Robert Bonfils, Alfred Latour, Emile Alain Seguy and Paul Dumas. Although the majority of pre-Second World War textiles are of French origin, the exhibition also includes some rare British furnishing fabrics from the 1930s, in particular the iconic and very elegant Magnolia Leaf by Marion Dorn, woven in off-white and silver viscut by Warner & Sons in 1936. During this period, Britain attracted talented European designers, such as Jacqueline Groag and Marian Mahler who had trained with Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule. They became highly influential in creating a 'New Look' that took hold of Britain after the austerities of the Second World War. 'The Festival of Britain,' held in 1951, was epitomised by Calyx which launched the career of its designer, Lucienne Day and is now considered to be a landmark of post-War design. So great was its success that several versions were produced as well as contemporary copies, all of which are reproduced here in spectacular colour. Two great textiles from the 1950s - Seaweed designed by Ashley Havinden in 1954 for Arthur Sanderson and Grecian by Alec Hunter in 1956 for Warner & Sons - bridge the gap between the spirit and elegance of the inter-War period and the new 'contemporary' look of the 1950s. Britain maintained its pre-eminent position in textile design throughout the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. This was because firms like Edinburgh Weavers, Heal & Sons and Hull Traders and museums such as the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester (the centre of the British textile industry) worked hard at integrating and promoting great design, often by well-known artists within the industry. Among the artists who worked with Edinburgh Weavers were Marino Marini, Victor Vasarely and Alan Reynolds. Britain was not alone in applying art to industry. An elegant example of Op Art is the work of the German artist, Wolf Bauer, whose 1969/70 designs for one of the leading American manufacturers, Knoll Textiles, is a highlight of this book.

Johns Hopkins University Press Redesigning Liberal Education: Innovative Design for a Twenty-First-Century Undergraduate Education
Redesigning liberal education requires both pragmatic approaches to discover what works and radical visions of what is possible. The future of liberal education in the United States, in its current form, is fraught but full of possibility. Today's institutions are struggling to maintain viability, sustain revenue, and assert value in the face of rising costs. But we should not abandon the model of pragmatic liberal learning that has made America's colleges and universities the envy of the world. Instead, Redesigning Liberal Education argues, we owe it to students to reform liberal education in ways that put broad and measurable student learning as the highest priority. Written by experts in higher education, the book is organized into two sections. The first section focuses on innovations at 13 institutions: Brown University, College of the Holy Cross, Connecticut College, Elon University, Florida International University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Lasell College, Northeastern University, Rollins College, Smith College, Susquehanna University, and the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. Chapters about these institutions consider the vast spectrum of opportunities and challenges currently faced by students, faculty, staff, and administrators, while also offering "radical visions" of the future of liberal education in the United States. Accompanying vision chapters written by some of the foremost leaders in higher education touch on a wide array of subjects and themes, from artificial intelligence and machines to the role that human dispositions, mindsets, resilience, and time play in how we guide students to ideas for bringing playful concepts of creativity and openness into our work.Ultimately, Redesigning Liberal Education reveals how humanizing forces, including critical thinking, collaboration, cross-cultural competencies, resilience, and empathy, can help drive our world. This uplifting collection is a celebration of the innovative work being done to achieve the promise of a valuable, engaging, and practical undergraduate liberal education. Isis Artze-Vega, Denise S. Not only is she afraid, and wishing she could protect her parents, she’s entranced by the flirtatious Matthew Stoltzfus. But Sarah can't convince her to share her secrets. Should the Amish finally resort to police protection? Matthew is asking if the Amish church is the right fit for him. Will Sarah follow him if he decides to leave the community? Sarah’s mother urges her to pay more attention to handsome newcomer Lee, the hardworking Amish man who helps anyone in the community in need. How will Sarah respond to all of the forces that are pulling her in different directions? The Witnesses, Book 3: When Sarah spots flames late one night in the widow Lydia’s barn, she refuses to let the fire win. She gets the horses out just in time, but not before a beam explodes overhead, knocking her to the ground as the barn rages in flames all around her. John Wiley & Sons Inc The Art and Science of Technology Transfer
Praise for The Art & Science of Technology Transfer "Phyl Speser's personality comes across in the text-complicated, intrigued, highly rational, insightful, rich in context, and fun. She had me smiling throughout. This work represents the next chapter of the technology transfer profession's development, where it will be all about getting to market with a studied awareness of value. Phyl gives us the tools to get there with a great read, just the focus we are needing in the profession." —Jill A. Tarzian Sorensen, JDExecutive Director, Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer, The Johns Hopkins University "Phyl Speser is one of the pioneers in developing the modern practice of technology transfer and in The Art & Science of Technology Transfer, she shares her experiences and philosophy in a well-written, highly readable book that is packed with case studies of both success and failure." —Ashley Stevens, Director, Office of Technology Transfer, Boston University "This readable book is a must for anyone wanting to look at the technology transfer process from a novel viewpoint. Rather than just recite the nuts and bolts of the process, it illustrates theoretical concepts with real world, practical examples. Any reader will come away with new and useful ways of looking at, and doing, this business." —Kenneth H. Levin, PHD, Deputy DirectorUniversity of Chicago Office of Technology & Intellectual Property (UCTech) "An amazing compendium of philosophy, science, and practical experience that converge to form, literally, the art and science of technology transfer. On any given page, you may find a quote from Plato, a mathematical formula, an intriguing anecdote by the author, or a practical 'how-to' statement. It's written in a very engaging style that keeps you turning from page to page . . . there's enough material in this book to launch a college course on Technology Transfer-nothing is left out!" —David Snyder, Vice President-Technology Commercialization Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) "This is an excellent introduction to sorting out the complex world of technology transfer, eminently useful to both practitionersand students. The text is thorough, filled with the practical examples, details, and guidelines useful to learn and practice this often-arcane subject, while never losing sight of an overarching paradigm for getting new technology out of the lab and into the market. I am certain that other teachers will find it as valuable as I have." —Lawrence Aronhime, Faculty Associate and Lecturer, The Johns Hopkins University, 2005 recipient Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award "A clear and entertaining presentation of the complexities of technology transfer and intellectual property, this book provides usable, practical information to students and practitioners on every page. The Art & Science of Technology Transfer provides a well-crafted immersion in the processes and practices of moving ideas into the marketplace." —Phil Weilerstein, Executive Director,National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA)

John Wiley & Sons Inc The Future of Finance after SEPA
SEPA was created by Europe’s banks in 2002 in response to regulations and plans drawn up by the European Commission from a meeting in Lisbon at the turn of the millennium. Consequently, SEPA has been assisted by new legislation, the PSD, which was agreed in 2007. The implementation of SEPA takes place in 2008 within the banking industry, with full operation in 2010, and will be a massive change to not just banking, but all aspects of finance and financial services across Europe and the globe. This is because the vision for SEPA is that, by 2010, all euro payments are treated in the same way as domestic payments. In other words, European citizens and corporations enjoy a transparent market where there is no difference in charges for payments between Rome, Madrid, Paris and Munich. As a result, citizens, governments and corporations will have full access to finance transparently across 15 countries today and potentially 31 tomorrow. A United States of Europe, fuelled by fully integrated financing, will be different to the fragmented Europe of the past. This book reviews the key implications and challenges of SEPA and the PSD across the European landscape, and the likely outcomes of SEPA for 2010 and beyond. The main themes that emerge are that many of Europe’s leading providers of payments infrastructures, which are often bankowned, will disappear and new payments providers and structures will emerge. Some of these will be evolutions and some will be revolutions. In addition, there will be major impacts upon those banks that cannot provide euro-services competitively in this new geographically competitive environment. The winners will reap major rewards, but there will be far more losers who will be merged or acquired. With contributions from leading authorities, including: • Anthony Kirby, the Reference Data User Group • Ashley Dowson, the SEPA Consultancy • Bo Harald, TietoEnator • Bodil Nelsson and Mats Wallén, Bankgirocentralen • Brenda O’Connell, Bank of Ireland • Chris Pickles, BT • Chris Skinner, the Financial Services Club and Balatro • Daniel Szmukler, EBA CLEARING • Daniele Danese, Banca Popolare di Verona • David Doyle, EU Policy Advisor on Financial Markets • Doctor John Ryan, CASS Business School • Erkki Poutiainen, Nordea • Eva King, the European Commission • Geoffroy de Schrevel, SWIFT • Gerard Hartsink, the European Payments Council • Gianfranco Tabasso, the European Association of Corporate Treasurers • Harry Leinonen, the Bank of Finland • Heiko Schmiedel, the European Central Bank • Henrik Parl, Eurogiro • Hervé Postic, founder, UTSIT • James Barclay, JPMorgan Chase • John Bullard, IdenTrust • John Chaplin, First Data • Jonathan Williams, Eiger • Juergen Weiss, Gartner • Mark Hale, Barclays Bank • Neil Burton, IBM • Nick Senechal, VocaLink • René Pelegero, PayPal • Richard Spong, Sterling Commerce • Robert Bradfield, Ernst & Young • Ruth Wandhöfer, Citi • Sean Fitzgerald, Sentinel • Sharon Bowles, Member of the European Parliament • Tom Buschman, TWIST

Oxford University Press Inc Learning from My Daughter: The Value and Care of Disabled Minds
Does life have meaning? What is flourishing? How do we attain the good life? Philosophers, and many others of us, have explored these questions for centuries. As Eva Feder Kittay points out, however, there is a flaw in the essential premise of these questions: they seem oblivious to the very nature of the ways in which humans live, omitting a world of co-dependency, and of the fact that we live in and through our bodies, whether they are fully abled or disabled. Our dependent, vulnerable, messy, changeable, and embodied experience colors everything about our lives both on the surface and when it comes to deeper concepts, but we tend to leave aside the body for the mind when it comes to philosophical matters. Disability offers a powerful challenge to long-held philosophical views about the nature of the good life, what provides meaning in our lives, and the centrality of reason, as well as questions of justice, dignity, and personhood. These concepts need not be distant and idealized; the answers are right before us, in the way humans interact with one another, care for one another, and need one another--whether they possess full mental capacities or have cognitive limitations. We need to revise our concepts of things like dignity and personhood in light of this important correction, Kittay argues. This is the first of two books in which Kittay will grapple with just how we need to revisit core philosophical ideas in light of disabled people's experience and way of being in the world. Kittay, an award-winning philosopher who is also the mother to a multiply-disabled daughter, interweaves the personal voice with the philosophical as a critical method of philosophical investigation. Here, she addresses why cognitive disability can reorient us to what truly matters, and questions the centrality of normalcy as part of a good life. With profound sensitivity and insight, Kittay examines other difficult topics: How can we look at the ethical questions regarding prenatal testing in light of a new appreciation of the personhood of disabled people? What do new possibilities in genetic testing imply for understanding disability, the family, and bioethics? How can we reconsider the importance of care, and how does it work best? In the process of pursuing these questions, Kittay articulates an ethic of care, which is the ethical theory most useful for claiming full rights for disabled people and providing the opportunities for everyone to live joyful and fulfilling lives. She applies the lessons of care to the controversial alteration of severely cognitively disabled children known as the Ashley Treatment, whereby a child's growth is halted with extensive estrogen treatment and related bodily interventions are justified. This book both imparts lessons that advocate on behalf of those with significant disabilities, and constructs a moral theory grounded on our ability to give, receive, and share care and love. Above all, it aims to adjust social attitudes and misconceptions about life with disability.
