Though fairly distinct among Syriac manuscripts, the nearly twenty exemplars of the so-called Syriac “Masora” remain relatively unknown and often misunderstood. These handbooks were developed to help the reader pronounce, interpret, and compare words from across a spectrum of different sources: including works of patristics, theology, liturgy, and the Bible. Because earlier studies of this genre have focused, almost exclusively, on the biblical portions of these manuscripts, little has been known about the collections of excerpts from 255 patristic-era writings included in many of these handbooks. This volume is the first-ever study and transcription of over ten thousand excerpted ‘vocalized words and readings’ (šmohē w-qroyoto) from works attributed to Greek writers such as Ps.-Dionysius, Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Severus of Antioch. In this book, Mirella Klomp gives an account of her research on the sound of worship among Surinamese Lutherans and Ghanaian Methodists in Amsterdam. Departing from the idea that the sonic spectrum of liturgy comprises more than 'church music' alone, she introduces 'sound' as a new and broader concept for the investigation of worship. It is a methodically transparent study that elaborates on liturgical ethnography, and thus investigates how the sound of worship takes shape in two particular churches. This first profound study on immigrant worship in the Netherlands starts with a theoretical introduction of basic notions, and continues with an empirical sounding of the field. In the final chapter, the author arranges a conversation between the cultural-anthropological outcomes of her research on the one hand, and theology on the other hand. Between 1986 and 1989, thirteen Jenaer Hofvernissagen (courtyard opening events) took place outside the official GDR cultural scene, so making free forms of visual art, literature, music, film and theater accessible to a broader audience.
