Antiquarian, archaeologist, vulcanologist, and envoy to the British Embassy in Naples, Sir William Hamilton (1731–1803) was a leading European figure of his time. Though the romance between his wife Lady Emma Hamilton and Horatio Nelson tends to eclipse Sir William’s own activities, his work as a scientist and a classicist made major contributions to the study of Pompei, Herculaneum, and Mt. Vesuvius. As an expert in ancient art, Hamilton also built up an invaluable collection of ancient Greek vases, subsequently sold to the British Museum in London in 1772. History Today carried a feature in 2015, describing The Origin of Museums as "a cult book [that] spawned a new discipline in the history of collecting". Indeed, the first publication of this book in 1985 undoubtedly marked a propitious moment in the development of interest, in what has since grown to be a dynamic subject-area in its own right. That an appetite for such matters was already there is confirmed by the fact that the first impression sold out within a few months, a second impression a year or two later, and the third in 1989. There was to be no further printing by the original publishers, Oxford University Press. However in 2001 a new edition appeared with a new publisher. Demand again proved buoyant, but within a few months the company failed; having operated on a print-on-demand basis, it left behind it no unsold stock. The Origins of Museums reverted to a scarce (though much sought-after) volume. With original copies now selling for hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, the Ashmolean is proud to make this important volume readily available again.

This is an autobiography of an insider in Edward Heath's cabinet and Margaret Thatcher's shadow cabinet, outside, but observant of Thatcher's and Major's cabinets. John Peyton was born in 1919 and was a Member of Parliament from 1951 until 1983. He was a Minister in Edward Heath's government, and was the only member of Margaret Thatcher's shadow cabinet not to become a minister following Thatcher's election triumph in 1979. It is likely that his rejection by Thatcher lay in her persistence in saying what he thought in the shadow cabinet. After education at Eton and Oxford, Peyton entered World War II and was one of the first British soldiers to be captured by the Germans. His account of five years as a POW is a story of endurance, camaraderie and the importance of humour, a quality with which Peyton is liberally endowed and which permeates the volume. In 1946, Peyton became Personal Assistant to Walter Monckton and worked with him in India at the time of Independence. During his 32 years in the House of Commons, and subsequently in the House of Lords, he has never been an unquestioning supporter of the party liine. He has pursued a variety of business and other interests.

Chippendale Senior's work has been well-documented but Chippendale Junior's work has never, until now, been thoroughly researched. The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale Junior repairs this omission. His patrons included members of the Royal Family, aristocrats, landed gentry and antiquarians; he was adept at satisfying their demands, whether they required lavish gilt or simpler, often mahogany, pieces. Where family archives and original settings survive, as at Harewood House, Paxton House and Stourhead, they reveal the variety and quality of Chippendale's output. Following a series of bland and short-lived prime ministers, Koizumi's infusion of fresh energy into a tired and opaque party has been compared with Tony Blair's successful revamping of New Labour in the U.K. Koizumi, however, had a weak power base in the party and limited diplomatic experience. How, then, was he able to exercise leadership? Tomohito Shinoda analyzes the prime minister's role in policymaking, focusing on the assistance he receives from the Kantei, or Cabinet Secretariat, the Japanese equivalent of the American president's White House cabinet.
