Charles Upham was the most highly decorated soldier in the Commonwealth forces of WWII, and could arguably be called the bravest soldier of the war. An unassuming stock worker/ valuer at the beginning of the war, he stormed through Crete and the Western Desert amazing and confounding his comrades with his exploits. He won two Victoria Crosses (the only combat soldier ever to do so) and in the opinion of his superiors deserved many more. Captured, he became an escape artist and ended his war in the famous Colditz POW camp. Shy and reluctant to take credit for his actions, he deflected all praise onto his soldiers and was described as “distraught” that he had been honoured. He then farmed in North Canterbury until his death in 1994, avoiding the limelight wherever possible. There has been one previous biography, “Mark of the Lion” published in 1962, which was a major bestseller and sells to this day.

The inter-war years saw a revival of interest in print, not merely as a technical means of reproduction but aesthetically as a medium for communicating meaning. The private press movement burgeoned, intent on moving printing towards being an art form. But at a more earthy level came the Monotype Corporation from America with its technical sophistication, and, after WWI, its publicist Beatrice Warde, a missionary nationwide for printers to become proud creative professionals. And along side all this came a flurry of 'little' journals, specifically setting out to better the aesthetic standards of printing, whilst the main printing journal - the Penrose Annual - was shifting its focus from technical matters to graphic design. Although a few such names as Stanley Morrison, are well-recorded, as key players in all this activity, there were many enthusiasts who devoted their working lives to raising printing standards, now long forgotten; in Printing People now to be given their time in the limelight.

Two things made the battleship possible: the harnessing of steam for propulsion and Britain’s vast industrial power in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. With these two massive powerhouses available to ship designers, it was inevitable that change would come to the seas. For a short while France led the way with the launching of the Gloire, but Britain soon stole the limelight with the launch of HMS Warrior in 1863. The moment her keel hit the water the naval world was turned upside down and all other warships were rendered obsolete. But that event was as nought compared to the astonishing revolution in warship building caused by the launch in 1906 of the mighty Dreadnought. If Warriorhad caused a great upheaval, the impact of Dreadnought was positively Krakatoan. Such was her impact on the naval world that her very name became generic. All battleships built before her were classed as ‘pre-Dreadnought’ and all battleships built post-1906 came to be known as ‘Dreadnoughts’. This is their story.
