Peeters Publishers "Wading Lambs and Swimming Elephants": The Bible for the Laity and Theologians in Late Medieval and Early Modern Era
The book's title alludes to Gregory the Great's famous metaphor in his Moralia in Job: The Bible is like a stream, broad and deep, shallow enough for the lamb to go wading, but deep enough for the elephant to swim. Gregory's intention was to show that the Bible contains several levels of instruction, so that it is fully accessible to both the lettered and the unlettered. This powerful metaphor has been applied and re-applied in various Christian traditions, and has been given expression in many and various ways. In this book, it is understood as a reference to the diverse biblical genres, vernacular and scholarly, as well as literary and pictorial, illustrating the wide reception of the Bible throughout history, both among the educated and uneducated. The articles included in this volume deal with diverse aspects of the history of the Church and theology, literary history, art history, and book history, but above all give testimony to the broad reception of the Bible in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era.

Peeters Publishers Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800
This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference entitled "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800". The conference took place in Amsterdam in April 2004 and was organized by "Biblia sacra", a joint Dutch-Flemish research group. The clamor for Bibles in the vernacular flourished within lay renewal movements of the late 14th century, including groups like the Brethren and Sisters of the Common Life. In the early 16th century, humanists like Erasmus and Lefevre d'Etaples stimulated vernacular Bible reading. As the Protestant Reformation became established, lay Bibles were produced on a large scale. In reaction to this development, Catholic theologians issued 'orthodox' Bible translations in various vernaculars based on the Vulgate. In sum, from the 15th to the 18th century, editions from various confessional or ideological backgrounds appeared throughout Western Europe. Of course, the invention and spread of the printing press greatly enhanced the distribution of these editions. The essays collected in this volume approach "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800" from various perspectives, including the history of books, art history and church history.

The University of Chicago Press Letters on Ethics – To Lucilius
The Roman statesman and philosopher Seneca (4 BCE-65 CE) recorded his moral philosophy and reflections on life as a highly original kind of correspondence. Letters on Ethics includes vivid descriptions of town and country life in Nero's Italy, discussions of poetry and oratory, and philosophical training for Seneca's friend Lucilius. This volume, the first complete English translation in nearly a century, makes the Letters more accessible than ever before. Written as much for a general audience as for Lucilius, these engaging letters offer advice on how to deal with everything from nosy neighbors to sickness, pain, and death. Seneca uses the informal format of the letter to present the central ideas of Stoicism, for centuries the most influential philosophical system in the Mediterranean world. His lively and at times humorous expositions have made the Letters his most popular work and an enduring classic. Including an introduction and explanatory notes by Margaret Graver and A. A. Long, this authoritative edition will captivate a new generation of readers.

Peeters Publishers Calliope's Classroom: Studies in Didactic Poetry from Antiquity to the Renaissance
The present volume contains twelve new essays on didactic verse, with a broad time-sweep ranging from the most ancient literature (Sumeria) through to the early-modern age (seventeenth-century England). Considered collectively, the contents illustrate the transmission of this important literary kind from Ancient to Modern times, and from east to west, from south to north. The Romantic age led to the lyric being seen as the dominant poetical mode, and today it has become almost axiomatic to view the chief function of poetry as the articulation of the thoughts and emotions of the individual; a concomitant assumption is that the essential quality of poetry is the aesthetic. However, in other cultures, and in earlier times, things were very different, and the didactic was long accorded a secure place as one of several prominent literary modes. While it is difficult to give a precise definition of the didactic, it may be said to be characteristically concerned with knowledge and wisdom, where the latter term inclines toward moral and religious instruction, and the former toward information both practical and encyclopaedic. The present contributions deal with the functioning of didactic verse in such widely diverse areas as: education in school; mnemotechnics; rhetoric, style and composition; farming; grammar; the natural world; cultural identity; liturgy and worship; aetiology; philosophy; politics; intertextuality; man as microcosm; the training of the soul; gender awareness. Truly, the classroom presided over by Calliope, the chief of muses, is no arid intellectual forcing-house but rather a place where the resources of rhetoric, learning and imagination are felicitously combined in the training of the individual mind and the betterment of society in general.

Peeters Publishers A Palace in the Wild: Essays on Vernacular Culture and Humanism in Late-Medieval and Renaissance Scotland
The essays in this collection share an overall purpose : they aim to shed new light on Scottish culture during the century and a half (1475-1625) which saw the full emergence of Scotland as a player on the European political and cultural stages. Throughout the book, awareness of the larger European background is considered an essential element in the proper appraisal of the productions of Scottish culture. Topics discussed include : the Scottish reception of, and participation in, general humanist learning; the impact of Burgundian patterns of late-medieval piety; international diplomacy; courtly culture under Kings James III, IV, V and VI, and Mary Stuart; poetry and politics; law; libraries; and historiography. The contributions in this volume offer innovative contextualisations and interpretations of many canonical works of Scottish culture; at the same time they also seek to expand that canon by examining several less familiar artistic productions. All those interested in the cultural changes inherent in the transition from the late-medieval to the early modern periods, and in the Northern manifestations of the European Renaissance, will find much of interest in this book. In the words of R.L. Stevenson, the cultural achievement of Scotland during this period may be described as constituting a metaphoric "palace in the wild".

Peeters Publishers A Berichtigungsliste of Demotic Documents
There seems to be no brief English equivalent for the concept of a Berichtigungsliste. This demotic Berichtigungsliste collects and critically presents corrections and supplements to editions of demotic documentary texts: papyri, ostraka, inscriptions, mummy labels, graffiti - everything demotic that was not clearly written as a secular or religious literary composition. The editors have added all the information they have found concerning inventory numbers and photographs as well as republications of the texts in question that the scholar working with the texts will find useful. Although the Berichtigungsliste chiefly concerns text editions, be they published in monographs or articles, texts that have been published only in photography or facsimile are also included. The period covered for the publications that have been ransacked for the purpose of the Berichtigungsliste is roughly the Twentieth Century: 1900-2000. In subsequent volumes, the editors intend to extend the time-range into the Nineteenth Century as well as into the future.

Academica Press Pottery Craft of the Yakut
This book offered to the reader's attention is an ethnographic study devoted to the traditional pottery of Yakutia. The author, A. A. Savvin, collected materials for the book during field research in 1939–1941, when ceramic tableware had largely already lost its former role in the household way of the Yakuts. But the skills for its manufacture were still preserved in certain localities. Savvin managed to document the last "living" evidence of a craft that had a centuries-old history and established traditions. It is noteworthy that the research conducted by Savvin was a scientific project in the modern sense of the term. It was carefully planned and executed in accordance with a pre-written program, which is also included in this edition. The sources of information were not only direct observations of the working processes of the production of ceramic tableware but also conversations-interviews with potters, memoirs of representatives of the older generation. A special layer of research consisted of materials of folklore, folk beliefs, and customs related to pottery.
