Rowman & Littlefield This Is Dinosaur: Echo Park Country and Its Magic Rivers
This Is Dinosaur was first published in 1955, in the midst of a bitter controversy over the proposed construction of dams at Echo Park. The outcome of the controversy--a congressional vote to prohibit the dams--"set in brass the principle that any part of the national park system should be immune from any sort of intrusion and damage," wrote Wallace Stegner in the 1985 edition of the book. Reprinted with new color photographs, This Is Dinosaur still stands as a classic introduction to the historic, scenic, archeological, and biological resources of the Monument by an impressive array of writers. Contains the following essays: ·"The Marks of Human Passage" by Wallace Stegner ·"Geological Exhibit" by Eliot Backwelder ·"The Natural World of Dinosaur" by Olaus Murie and Joseph W. Penfold ·"The Ancients of the Canyons" by Robert Lister ·"Fast Water" by Otis "Dock" Marston ·"A Short Look at Eden" by David Bradley ·"The National Park Idea" by Alfred A. Knopf

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Church of England and the Home Front, 1914-1918: Civilians, Soldiers and Religion in Wartime Colchester
Challenges the tired orthodoxy that the Church of England had a bad First World War. In telling the story of the Church and its people in Colchester, a garrison town, Robert Beaken enlivens our understanding of the First World War - not only as a clash of mighty forces, but also at a personal and communal level.'The Very Rev. Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster The Church of England is popularly believed to have had a bad First World War. This book challenges that tired orthodoxy. It examines the relationship between parish churches and the Army during the war, using the important garrison town of Colchester as a case study. Colchester in 1914-18 was a microcosm both of English society and of the Church of England, in all their diversity. The presence of the Army also meant that wartime experiences and trends which were noticeable elsewhere in England were sharply felt in Colchester. For the generation of Britons who lived through the Great War, Christianity was an important part of their culture, world view and, in many instances, personal lives. To understand life on the home front during the war, it is vital to understand the part played by Christianity, and particularly by the parishes of the Church of England. With the help of newly discovered archival material, this book reassesses the relations between clergy, soldiers and civilians to show that, contrary to widely-held belief, the clergy and their parishioners responded to the crisis of 1914-18 with courage, common sense and self-sacrifice: their ministry kept much of the population going during the Great War. ROBERT BEAKEN is parish priest of St Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield, and St Katharine, Little Bardfield, in Essex. He holds a PhD from King's College, London, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is the author of seven works, including Cosmo Lang: Archbishop in War and Crisis(2012).

University of Toronto Press Envisioning Democracy: New Essays after Sheldon Wolin's Political Thought
Few terms elicit such strong and varied feelings and yet have so little clarity as "democracy." Leaders of large states use "democracy" to designate their nations’ public character even as critics and rivals use the term to validate their own political perspectives. In Envisioning Democracy, the editors and contributors address the following questions: What does democracy mean today? What could it mean tomorrow? What is the dynamic of democracy in an increasingly interdependent world? Envisioning Democracy explores these questions amid the dynamic of democracy as a political phenomenon interacting with forms of economic, ethical, ethnic, and intellectual life. The book draws on the work of Sheldon S. Wolin (1922–2015), one of the most influential American theorists of the last fifty years. Here, scholars consider the historical conditions, theoretical elements, and practical impediments to democracy, using Wolin’s insights as touchstones in thinking through the possibilities and obstacles facing democracy now and in the future.

University of Texas Press Dakotah: The Return of the Future
“On a bend, I will see it, a piece of ground off to the side. I will know the feel of this place: the leaves stir slowly on the trees, dry air smells like dust, birds dart and the trails are made by beasts living free.”When award-winning author Charles Bowden died in 2014, he left behind a trove of unpublished manuscripts. Dakotah marks the landmark publication of the first of these texts, and the fourth installment in his acclaimed “Unnatural History of America.” Bowden uses America’s Great Plains as a lens—sometimes sullied, sometimes shattered, but always sharp—for observing pivotal moments in the lives of anguished figures, including himself. In scenes that are by turns wrenching and poetic, Bowden describes the Sioux’s forced migrations and rebellions alongside his own ancestors’ migrations from Europe to Midwestern acres beset by unforgiving winters. He meditates on the lives of his resourceful mother and his philosophical father, who rambled between farm communities and city life. Interspersed with these images are clear-eyed, textbook-defying anecdotes about Lewis and Clark, Daniel Boone, and, with equal verve, twentieth-century entertainers “Pee Wee” Russell, Peggy Lee, and other musicians. The result is a kaleidoscopic journey that penetrates the senses and redefines the notion of heartland. Dakotah is a powerful ode to loss from one of our most fiercely independent writers.

The University of Chicago Press Gabriel Tarde On Communication and Social Influence: Selected Papers
Gabriel Tarde ranks as one of the most outstanding sociologists of nineteenth-century France, though not as well known by English readers as his peers Comte and Durkheim. This book makes available Tarde's most important work and demonstrates his continuing relevance to a new generation of students and thinkers. Tarde's landmark research and empirical analysis drew upon collective behavior, mass communications, and civic opinion as elements to be explained within the context of broader social patterns. Unlike the mass society theorists that followed in his wake, Tarde integrated his discussions of societal change at the macrosocietal and individual levels, anticipating later twentieth-century thinkers who fused the studies of mass communications and public opinion research. Terry N. Clark's introduction, considered the premier guide to Tarde's opus, and a foreword by Morris Janowitz accompany this important work, reprinted here for the first time in forty years.

The University of Chicago Press Presidents, Populism, and the Crisis of Democracy
Has American democracy's long, ambitious run come to an end? Possibly yes. As William G. Howell and Terry M. Moe argue in this trenchant new analysis of modern politics, the United States faces a historic crisis that threatens our system of self-government--and if democracy is to be saved, the causes of the crisis must be understood and defused. The most visible cause is Donald Trump, who has used his presidency to attack the nation's institutions and violate its democratic norms. Yet Trump is but a symptom of causes that run much deeper: social forces like globalization, automation, and immigration that for decades have generated economic harms and cultural anxieties that our government has been wholly ineffective at addressing. Millions of Americans have grown angry and disaffected, and populist appeals have found a receptive audience. These are the drivers of Trump's dangerous presidency. And after he leaves office, they will still be there for other populists to weaponize. What can be done to safeguard American democracy? The disruptive forces of modernity cannot be stopped. The solution lies, instead, in having a government that can deal with them--which calls for aggressive new policies, but also for institutional reforms that enhance its capacity for effective action. The path to progress is filled with political obstacles, including an increasingly populist, anti-government Republican Party. It is hard to be optimistic. But if the challenge is to be met, we need reforms of the presidency itself--reforms that harness the promise of presidential power for effective government, but firmly protect against the fear that it may be put to anti-democratic ends.

Johns Hopkins University Press Why the Amish Sing: Songs of Solidarity and Identity
Singing occurs in nearly every setting of Amish life. It is a sanctioned pleasure that frames all Amish rituals and one that enlivens and sanctifies both routine and special events, from household chores, road trips by buggy, and family prayer to baptisms, youth group gatherings, weddings, and "single girl" sings. But because Amish worship is performed in private homes instead of public churches, few outsiders get the chance to hear Amish people sing. Amish music also remains largely unexplored in the field of ethnomusicology. In Why the Amish Sing, D. Rose Elder introduces readers to the ways that Amish music both reinforces and advances spiritual life, delving deep into the Ausbund, the oldest hymnal in continuous use. This illuminating ethnomusicological study demonstrates how Amish groups in Wayne and Holmes Counties, Ohio - the largest concentration of Amish in the world-sing to praise God and, at the same time, remind themselves of their 450-year history of devotion. Singing instructs Amish children in community ways and unites the group through common participation. As they sing in unison to the weighty words of their ancestors, the Amish confirm their love and support for the community. Their singing delineates their common journey - a journey that demands separation from the world and yielding to God's will. By making school visits, attending worship services and youth sings, and visiting private homes, Elder has been given the rare opportunity to listen to Amish singing in its natural social and familial context. She combines one-on-one interviews with detailed observations of how song provides a window into Amish cultural beliefs, values, and norms.

Taylor & Francis Inc Psychotherapy Abbreviation: A Practical Guide
Psychotherapy Abbreviation is a field-tested approach designed to train both experienced and student mental health professionals to do brief therapy that is effective and highly satisfactory to clients. This book is unique in that it is the only text that is compatible with almost all approaches to treatment, making it suitable as a primer of brief therapy usable by virtually all psychotherapists. Most other brief therapy books are affiliated with a specific theory of psychopathology, making each limited to those who share the author's theoretical orientation.Pekarik wrote this text based on his own brief therapy training manual because he could not find a text suitable for the wide range of psychotherapy approaches represented by the therapists whom he trains in his research, teaching, and consulting work. By offering a unique approach derived from the “active ingredients” common to all forms of brief therapy and the literature on client treatment preferences, Psychotherapy Abbreviation simplifies the abbreviation process and makes it accessible to all therapists. Pekarik's strategies have been field-tested; he has used them to train hundreds of therapists who have demonstrated success with clients--increased client satisfaction, improved treatment effectiveness, and lowered dropout rates. These same therapists also doubled the proportion of cases they treated with brief therapy. This “how to do it” text is extremely practical. It assumes that the reader already has a theory and set of therapy techniques, true of even most graduate students. The emphasis is then placed on the treatment abbreviation process itself. Because of this highly focused approach, the text will, like the technique it describes, be concise and brief. By avoiding association with any particular school of therapy, Pekarik's approach is usable by all schools of therapy. Therapists and future therapists now in graduate school will benefit from Psychotherapy Abbreviation as it explores these topics: rationale for the abbreviation of psychotherapy practical and ethical issues to consider in client selection a conceptual model for treatment abbreviation rapid assessment and case conceptualization establishing a brief therapy focus goal establishment and negotiation adapting standard psychotherapy techniques to the brief format practice issues in brief therapy Psychotherapy Abbreviation is two-part. Part one is an orientation to this model of brief therapy in which Pekarik emphasizes a research-based rationale for doing brief therapy; presents a general theory of why brief treatments work; and provides guidelines for the identification of appropriate clients for brief therapy. The second part of the text is devoted to technical skills training. It begins with an overview of the techniques common to most schools of brief therapy and describes a “universal model” of brief therapy. Readers are then taken step-by-step through a description of the four most important abbreviation techniques, presented in the typical order of use with clients. To encourage readers to consistently apply the recommended techniques, Pekarik includes one particular training case which he describes in detail and uses it in all of the technical skills chapters in special “Case Application” sections of these chapters. Before describing the detailed applications, Pekarik prompts readers to consider how they would apply the abbreviating technique presented in that chapter to the case. With individual exercises, he gives special attention to how readers can adapt their personal therapy styles and theoretical orientations to brief therapy. As a result, readers develop both a rationale and abbreviation strategy compatible with their values and practical needs as therapists. The exercises are found in each chapter in special “exercise
