Vintage Publishing The Red House Mystery
Classic crime, at its very best. With a new introduction by Gyles Brandreth. The Red House is a country residence far removed from the world of the Hundred Acre Wood but its story has much of the same charm and wit. There is, of course, a murder, and when the local police fail to solve the crime, an amateur sleuth readily steps in. What follows is a delightful whodunnit with humour, excitement and a suitably surprising twist at the end.A. A. Milne loved detective stories and pays homage to Sherlock Holmes in his detective - the clever and charismatic Anthony Gillingham- and his assistant, Bill Beverley. This is classic crime at its very best.'I love his writing' P.G.Wodehouse

Atlantic Books Prince Albert: The Man Who Saved the Monarchy
Chosen as a Book of the Year in The Times and the Daily Mail'Highly entertaining' Sunday Times'Enthralling' Daily TelegraphFor more than six decades, Queen Victoria ruled a great Empire at the height of its power. Beside her for more than twenty of those years was the love of her life, her trusted husband and father of their nine children, Prince Albert. But while Victoria is seen as the embodiment of her time, it was Prince Albert, A. N. Wilson expertly argues, who was at the vanguard of Victorian Britain's transformation as a vibrant and extraordinary centre of political, technological, scientific and intellectual advancement. A composer, engineer, soldier, politician, linguist and bibliophile, Prince Albert, more than any other royal, was truly a 'genius'.

Oneworld Publications The Good State: On the Principles of Democracy
The foundations upon which our democracies stand are inherently flawed, vulnerable to corrosion from within. What is the remedy? A. C. Grayling makes the case for a clear, consistent, principled and written constitution, and sets out the reforms necessary – among them addressing the imbalance of power between government and Parliament, imposing fixed terms for MPs, introducing proportional representation and lowering the voting age to 16 (the age at which you can marry, gamble, join the army and must pay taxes if you work) – to ensure the intentions of such a constitution could not be subverted or ignored. As democracies around the world show signs of decay, the issue of what makes a good state, one that is democratic in the fullest sense of the word, could not be more important. To take just one example: by the simplest of measures, neither Britain nor the United States can claim to be truly democratic. The most basic tenet of democracy is that no voice be louder than any other. Yet in our ‘first past the post’ electoral systems a voter supporting a losing candidate is unrepresented, his or her voice unequal to one supporting a winning candidate, who frequently does not gain a majority of the votes cast. This is just one of a number of problems, all of them showing that democratic reform is a necessity in our contemporary world.

Peeters Publishers Private Associations in the Pontic Greek Cities (6th Century BC-3rd Century AD)
This book examines private associations from the Pontic Greek cities (6th century BC-3rd century AD), based on epigraphic evidence (205 inscriptions which record 114 associations). The approach is that of an ancient social historian and takes into consideration the participants, the practices and the impact of the phenomenon of these organisations, in order to understand Pontic society and the way it functioned at a smaller scale, that of the associations. It is arranged as chapters, plus a Glossary and two extensive appendices (catalogues of epigraphic sources and members). The book reveals that, in the Pontic area, the associations had a fragmentary character and were influenced by the political, social and economic evolution of the region, with a couple of cities on the western and northern shores pre-eminent; and secondly, that the Pontic associative phenomenon had, overall, a relatively marginal and time-limited role when compared with other parts of the ancient world (due not only to the state of the research of the Greek Black Sea settlements themselves but also to local characteristics).

Peeters Publishers Experiencing Presence in the Second Temple Period: Revised and Updated Essays
This volume brings together twelve essays by Angela Kim Harkins that use integrative and interdisciplinary approaches to contribute new insights to the understanding of religious experience in ancient Judaism and Christianity. Building on the text-centered work that characterizes much of Second Temple studies, Harkins seeks to reintegrate ancient Jewish and Christian texts with various aspects of the flesh-and-blood experience of religion by using performance-based methods, ritual studies, integrative cognitive science approaches, and emotion studies. This volume aims to overcome the common mind-body dualism that dominates the study of ancient texts by offering ways to imagine the integrative phenomenological experience of these texts for ancient peoples.

Peeters Publishers Statues in Context: Production, Meaning and (Re)uses
Moving beyond typological and stylistic discourses on Egyptian statuary, the papers gathered here seek to explore the architectural, cultic and production contexts of statuary, to shed light on religious or cultural practices, and the political or economic agenda behind the display or hiding of these sculptures. How and why were they originally displayed or kept invisible, transported, transformed or buried? New discoveries, the re-contextualisation of earlier excavated statues as well as recent scientific analyses provide significant new insights into the production, meaning and (re-)uses of statues. This collection of papers encompasses the full typological and chronological range – from the Old Kingdom to Late Antiquity – and includes statuary of all scales, from colossi to figurines. The studies cover statues mainly set up in temples, palaces, houses and tombs, and the later biographies of statues’ assemblages.

Peeters Publishers Die Anbetung Der Magier Und Die Taufe Der Sasaniden.

Peeters Publishers Les "Revoltes Egyptiennes": Recherches Sur Les Troubles Intaerieurs En Egypte Du Raegne De Ptolaemaee III Evergaete a La Conquaete Romaine

Peeters Publishers La Prosodie DES Circonstants En Francais Parle
