"In 1871, the greatest, most revolutionary poets of their time—Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine, Charles Cros, Germain Nouveau, André Gill—gathered at the Hôtel des Étrangers in Paris to realize a joint, subversive, and forward-looking project: the Album Zutique. Later, in the 20th century, artists and poets, initially close to Dadaism and Surrealism, dedicated themselves to cooperative ways of working. Their Cadavres exquis—works characterized by chance and playfulness, and based on the principle of “blind” team work—are still outstanding examples of artistic collaborations today. These were characterized in the 20th and 21st centuries by friendships as well as by political convictions. This publication explores the genesis of these collaborative artworks. On September 18, 1928, Myles Yutaka Fukunaga kidnapped and brutally murdered ten-year-old George Gill Jamieson in Waikîkî. Fukunaga, a nineteen-year-old nisei, or second-generation Japanese American, confessed to the crime. Within three weeks, authorities had convicted him and sentenced him to hang, despite questions about Fukunaga's sanity and a deeply flawed defense by his court-appointed attorneys. Jonathan Y. Okamura argues that officials "raced" Fukunaga to death—first viewing the accused only as Japanese despite the law supposedly being colorblind, and then hurrying to satisfy the Haole (white) community's demand for revenge. Okamura sets the case against an analysis of the racial hierarchy that undergirded Hawai‘ian society, which was dominated by Haoles who saw themselves most threatened by the islands' sizable Japanese American community. The Fukunaga case and others like it in the 1920s reinforced Haole supremacy and maintained the racial boundary that separated Haoles from non-Haoles, particularly through racial injustice. As Okamura challenges the representation of Hawai i as a racial paradise, he reveals the ways Haoles usurped the criminal justice system and reevaluates the tense history of anti-Japanese racism in Hawai i.

While “transsexual” and “transvestite” were central categories that organized trans experience across a wide array of geographies, genders, and racial and class coordinates during the twentieth century, these categories have receded into the background of Anglophone activism and academia, the authors argue. Mention the name Carlisle to any steam enthusiast of a certain age and they will probably conjure up an image of bygone days when Stanier and Gresley pacifics rubbed shoulders alongside each other within Citadel station whilst waiting to relieve incoming titled trains such as the Royal Scot and the Waverley. Such scenes, in addition to steam locomotives threading their way across a network of goods lines, and the city's three surviving motive power depots, were all subjects captured on film by a number of young enthusiasts who lived in Carlisle during the final years of steam. It is the work of those cameramen, aided by others who visited the area, that will offer the reader an insight as to the variety that still prevailed at Carlisle during that time. Looking slightly further afield, images are also included which feature locomotives working hard on those steeply graded lines that radiated from the city towards summits with names to capture the enthusiast's imagination, such as Shap, Beattock, Whitrope, and Ais Gill. This book, which illustrates in depth one of the country's major steam centres, contains more than two-hundred photographs, presented in both colour and black and white, the majority of which have not been published previously.
