However, Persuasion in Parallel shows that individuals do, in fact, change their minds in response to information, with partisans on either side of the political aisle updating their views roughly in parallel. This book challenges the dominant view that persuasive information can often backfire because people are supposedly motivated to reason against information they dislike. Drawing on evidence from a series of randomized controlled trials, the book shows that the backfire response is rare to nonexistent. Instead, it shows that most everyone updates in the direction of information, at least a little bit. The political upshot of this work is that the other side is not lost. Even messages we don't like can move us in the right direction.

Focusing on refugees in camps and cities in Africa, it identifies approaches that can be effective in improving the welfare of refugees, increasing social cohesion between refugees and host communities, and reducing the need for onward migration. This bibliography takes the first step in that process for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), founded in 1809, one of the largest religious bodies to originate in America, whose history can be seen to parallel American culture in many ways. Works by chemists, engineers, nurses, librarians, politicians, public school teachers, journalists, pastors, and theologians are all included. The goal is to provide a bibliography of representative works by Disciples from 1866, the death date of Alexander Campbell, the last of the denomination's four founders, through 1984, the end of President Ronald Reagan's first term in office.

Richard Halliburton was the quintessential world traveler of the early 20th century. In 1930, his celebrity equaled that of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Halliburton called himself a ""horizon chaser,"" forwarding the idea that one should see the world before committing to a routine. Not only did he live up to his ideal, but he was eager to write about his adventures. A prolific partnership with gifted editor and ghost writer Paul Mooney produced excellent work and became a close personal relationship. Sadly, Halliburton and Mooney disappeared at sea on March 24, 1939, along with the entire crew of Halliburton's Chinese junk Sea Dragon, as they attempted to cross the Pacific. This biography records the life and adventures of Halliburton and Mooney, focusing - as no other Halliburton biography has - on the productive literary collaboration between the two. Drawing on the recollections of people who knew them both, the work discusses their backgrounds, the early years of their acquaintance, and their possible romantic relationship. Finally, their fateful journey to Hong Kong and the ill-advised voyage of the Sea Dragon is described in detail. A good deal of first-hand evidence is provided by William Alexander, Paul Mooney's best friend and designer of Halliburton's Laguna Beach house. Appendices contain seven poems by Mooney and a series of letters, including one of praise written by Richard Halliburton to William Alexander. Never-before-published photographs are also included.
