Springer Experimental evaluation of stress concentration and intensity factors: Useful methods and solutions to Experimentalists in fracture mechanics
Experiments on fracture of materials are made for various purposes. Of primary importance are those through which criteria predicting material failure by deformation and/or fracture are investigated. Since the demands of engineering application always precede the development of theories, there is another kind of experiment where conditions under which a particular material can fail are simulated as closely as possible to the operational situation but in a simplified and standardized form. In this way, many of the parameters corresponding to fracture such as toughness, Charpy values, crack opening distance (COD), etc. are measured. Obviously, a sound knowledge of the physical theories governing material failure is necessary as the quantity of interest can seldom be evaluated in a direct manner. Critical stress intensity factors and critical energy release rates are examples. Standard test of materials should be distinguished from basic experi ments. They are performed to provide routine information on materials responding to certain conditions of loading or environment. The tension test with or without a crack is among one of the most widely used tests. Because they affect the results, with size and shape of the specimen, the rate of loading, temperature and crack configuration are standardized to enable comparison and reproducibility of results. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) provides a great deal of information on recommended procedures and methods of testing. The objective is to standardize specifications for materials and definition of technical terms.

Springer International Publishing AG Banach Space Valued Neural Network: Ordinary and Fractional Approximation and Interpolation
This book is about the generalization and modernization of approximation by neural network operators. Functions under approximation and the neural networks are Banach space valued. These are induced by a great variety of activation functions deriving from the arctangent, algebraic, Gudermannian, and generalized symmetric sigmoid functions. Ordinary, fractional, fuzzy, and stochastic approximations are exhibited at the univariate, fractional, and multivariate levels. Iterated-sequential approximations are also covered. The book’s results are expected to find applications in the many areas of applied mathematics, computer science and engineering, especially in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Other possible applications can be in applied sciences like statistics, economics, etc. Therefore, this book is suitable for researchers, graduate students, practitioners, and seminars of the above disciplines, also to be in all science and engineering libraries.

Taylor & Francis Inc Space Weather Fundamentals
Space weather is one of the most significant natural hazards to human life and health. Conditions of the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems. If conditions in the space environment are adverse, they can cause disruption of satellite operations, communications, navigation, and electric power distribution grids, leading to a variety of socioeconomic losses. This book provides an overview of our current knowledge and theoretical understanding of space weather formation and covers all major topics of this phenomena, from the sun to the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere, thus providing a fully updated review of this rapidly advancing field. The book brings together an outstanding team of internationally recognised contributors to cover topics such as solar wind, the earth's magnetic field, radiation belts, the aurora, spacecraft charging, orbital drag and GPS.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art La Serenissima: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Art from North American Collections
For over a millennium, the Italian coastal state of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, or La Serenissima, flourished as a center for sea trade and the arts. Here an important final phase of late Baroque mythological and Biblical painting took place. Venice also became an important destination on the Grand Tour, where its aquatic setting and unique network of canals, palaces, and churches inspired a talented group of view painters, especially during the eighteenth century. Today, collections throughout North America hold many works from this prolific period.La Serenissima presents new scholarship on works that have not received due public attention in recent years and brings together approximately 65 works of art from more than 25 collections. Together, they represent important regional developments in religious and topographical painting as well as genre and portraiture. These artworks display the inimitable aspects of Venetian taste and culture in the age of the Grand Tour and through the decline of the Republic. La Serenissima also casts new light on the achievements of Venetian view painters, including master painter Antonio Canaletto, Bernardo Bellotto, Luca Carlevarijs, and Francesco Guardi.

Princeton University Press Poets of the Tamil Anthologies: Ancient Poems of Love and War
The poems of ancient Tamil are one of India's most important contributions to world literature. Presented here in English translation is a selection of roughly three hundred poems from five of the earliest poetic anthologies of classical Tamil literature. These lyrical poems are intimately related to the agricultural society that produced them, and their direct connection with the earth as well as their use of ornament and suggestion give them a quality unlike that of any other poetic tradition. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Britain and European Integration Since 1945
Britain has been a member of the European Community since the start of 1973, but it is only recently, with the publicity given to the plans for the creation of the single market in 1992, and the role of the community in environmental and social policies, that the mass of the population of Britain have begun to notice the possibilities that membership holds. Mrs Thatcher's government has played down and resisted the increased integration that seems to be taking place in Europe, but it is unlikely that Britain can stand apart from this process much longer.

Indiana University Press Creating a Hoosier Self-Portrait: The Federal Writers' Project in Indiana, 1935-1942
From 1935 to 1942, the Indiana office of the Federal Writers' Program hired unemployed writers as "field workers" to create a portrait in words of the land, the people, and the culture of the Hoosier state. This book tells the story of the project and its valuable legacy. Beginning work under the guidance of Ross Lockridge, whose son would later burst onto the American literary scene with his novel Raintree County, the group would eventually produce Indiana: A Guide to the Hoosier State, Hoosier Tall Stories, and other publications. Though many projects were never brought to completion, the Program's work remains a useful and rarely tapped storehouse of information on the history and culture of the state.
