A student and law partner of abolitionist Benjamin F. Wade, Ranney acquired an antislavery reputation and recruited troops for the Union army; but as a Democratic candidate for governor he denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in the territories, and during the Civil War and Reconstruction he condemned Republican policies. Ranney was a key delegate at Ohio’s second constitutional convention and a two-time justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He advocated equality and limited government as understood by radical Jacksonian Democrats. The term 'tailored' has changed as methods of manufacture and the retailing of clothes have evolved. This book demonstrates the wide range of cutting methods used to produce garments which are described as 'tailored' jackets. Although the main focus is on modern methods of producing clothing, a rich and complex cutting tradition is acknowledged and used. It is hoped that the modern garment designer will be inspired to rediscover methods that retain their validity today. The different approaches to 'tailored' cutting are described under three headings: bespoke cutting, engineered cutting and style cutting. The rich heritage of the latter came from the tremendous creativity that was unleashed by women's emancipation at the beginning of the twentieth century and the merging of tailored styles with fashionable clothing. The section on style cutting has therefore derived some of the cutting techniques from that period, thus demonstrating how they can be applied to current methods of production.

Born in Sacramento in 1939, the artist Richard Jackson was one of the leading figures in the Californian art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by abstract expressionism and action painting, Jackson developed a combination of painting and action that, much like documentation, exposes the physical effort and time spent in creating a work of art. During his early years, Jackson focused a spotlight on his artistic practice, which he regarded less as a mythical, inspired creative process than a hands-on production of a work of art: assembling the stretcher, attaching the canvas to the frame, applying the paint. Later in his career, Jackson delegated the painting process to complex machines that he used as protagonists or props in his works. This book introduces a selection of his installations entitled Rooms, which feature cartoonlike figures - often dogs or ducks with human traits or plastic figures resembling Playmobil toys - spouting paint from their mouths or genitals.
