Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine have brought scholarly and public attention to Ukraine’s borders. Making Ukraine aims to investigate the various processes of negotiation, delineation, and contestation that have shaped the country’s borders throughout the past century.Essays by contributors from various historical fields consider how, when, and under what conditions the borders that historically define the country were agreed upon. A diverse set of national and transnational contexts are explored, with a primary focus on the critical period between 1917 and 1954. Chapters are organized around three main themes: the interstate treaties that brought about the new international order in Eastern Europe in the aftermath of the world wars, the formation of the internal boundaries between Ukraine and other Soviet republics, and the delineation of Ukraine’s borders with its western neighbours. Le quartier des prêtres est un quartier résidentiel situé dans le sanctuaire d’Amon à Karnak, à l’est du lac Sacré. Au cours du premier millénaire avant notre ère, il a été presque continuellement occupé par des prêtres le temps de leur service cultuel. Un programme de recherche lancé en 2001 par le Centre franco-égyptien d’étude des temples de Karnak (Cfeetk) complète et révise les résultats de fouilles de sauvetage menées dans ce secteur dans les années 1970, jusqu’alors partiellement publiés. L’histoire et l’évolution de ce quartier, ainsi que l’identité, la culture matérielle, la vie quotidienne et le régime alimentaire de ses habitants, ont été établis au moyen d’une collaboration pluridisciplinaire pendant de nouvelles fouilles et des missions d’études du matériel. Cette recherche explore la manière dont cet habitat s’intègre dans le contexte plus large du temple, en particulier son environnement religieux et architectural direct sur la rive sud du lac Sacré qui jadis abritait de grands secteurs économiques et peut-être artisanaux. L’étude de ces annexes offre un témoignage unique et éloquent des activités quotidiennes au sein du temple d’Amon à Karnak et de la vie des serviteurs des dieux égyptiens. The Priests’ Quarter is a housing quarter located within the sanctuary of Amun in Karnak, to the east of the Sacred Lake. For almost all of the first millennium BC, it was occupied by priests performing their cultic service. A research programme initiated in 2001 by the Centre franco-égyptien d’étude des Temples de Karnak (Cfeetk) completes and revises the results of rescue excavations led in this area in the 1970s, which had so far never been fully published. The history and evolution of this quarter, as well as the identity, material culture, daily life and diet of its inhabitants, have been established through a multidisciplinary collaboration during excavation and post-excavation studies. This research explores how this settlement fits into the larger context of the temple, particularly its direct religious and architectural environment on the southern bank on the Sacred Lake where once stood large economic and possibly artisanal sectors. The study of these temple annexes offers a unique and eloquent testimony on the day-to-day activities within the temple of Amun in Karnak itself and the life of ancient Egyptian priests in general.

Painstakingly culled from a vast collection, these letters evoke the unfiltered voices of people of all classes and occupations during the tremendous upheaval of the early postwar period, when the Japanese were coming to terms with the devastating losses of the war, adjusting to a new political system, and creating the framework for economic and social recovery. Written by people of all ages and walks of life, the letters raise issues ranging from Japanese war crimes to the future of the emperor system, from the behavior of American occupation troops to pleas for the United States to annex Japan. Some writers offered to serve as spies for the occupation forces; others appealed for help in solving individual problems, protested allegedly unfair treatment by the occupation, or made detailed recommendations for the reform of Japanese society. Sodei's running commentary places the letters in their historical context, and the substantive foreword by John W. Dower, who drew upon Sodei's research for his Pulitzer Prize-winning Embracing Defeat, further assesses the significance of the letters in understanding Japan's occupation experience.

Why do so many states adopt a position of non-recognition of gains from war?Despite being proven ineffective as a coercive tool or deterrent, the international community has actively withheld recognition in numerous instances of territorial conquest since the 1930s. Joseph O'Mahoney systematically analyses 21 case studies including the Manchurian Crisis, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and Russia's annexation of Crimea to explore why so many states have adopted a policy of non-recognition of the spoils of war. By drawing on historical sources including recently declassified archival documents, he evaluates states' decision-making. Certains auteurs traitent de procedes de copies, de l'usage de cartons, modeles et papiers perfores, mais egalement de couleurs, d'encres, d'enduits, de technique picturale ...D'autres auteurs tentent de preciser le nombre de collaborateurs dans les ateliers. D'autres encore s'interessent a une methode d'examen, comme la radiographie, pour l'exploiter afin de distinguer au mieux la main du maitre de celle du copiste.

Louis Massignon (1883-1962), islamologue et arabisant francais qui marqua les etudes orientales et les relations islamo-chretiennes, avait plus d'un lien avec la culture persane. Forme aux methodes classiques, il connaissait evidemment le persan. Le mystique al-Hallaj (execute a Bagdad en 922), dont il fit son sujet central, etait d'origine iranienne et c'est en Perse qu'il faut chercher une partie des sources de sa biographie, de sa doctrine et de son martyre. Massignon s'etait rendu a plusieurs reprises en Iran, oA' il avait utilise toutes les ressources de sa grande liberte de parole pour briser certains blocages. Mais surtout il a laisse aupres de certains Iraniens des traces intellectuelles et spirituelles non negligeables. Ce livre reprend les communications d'un colloque organise a la Sorbonne nouvelle le 15 octobre 1994. Massignon avait ete le premier directeur de l'Institut d'etudes iraniennes dont le redecoupage universitaire des annees 1970 a lie le destin a cette universite. A ce titre, la reunion devait rappeler la place des etudes iraniennes a cote des etudes d'arabe et d'islamologie, l'importance de la culture persane dans l'histoire religieuse et spirituelle du monde musulman. Eve Pierunek est maitre de conferences, Yann Richard est professeur, a l'Institut d'etudes iraniennes de la Sorbonne nouvelle.

Hubert Boone (Nederokkerzeel, 1940) a joue tres jeune du cornet dans la fanfare de son village natal. Il a etudie de 1957 a 1969 au Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Bruxelles, entre autres chez Victor Legley, Jan Louel, Marcel Quinet et Rene Defossez. Il y a obtenu trois Premiers Prix. Apres ses etudes, il fut pour un temps altiste dans l'orchestre de l'Opera flamand d'Anvers. En 1968, il devint collaborateur scientifique au Musee Instrumental de Bruxelles. La meme annee, il fut laureat de la Fondation belge de la Vocation pour son travail de recherche sur la musique populaire flamande et wallonne. En, 1978, il a succede a Paul Collaer a la Commission royale belge de Folklore (section flamande). Hubert Boone a publie plusieurs monographies et de nombreux articles sur les instruments populaires belges et europeens. Il a realise ces dernieres annees plusieurs CD d'enregistrements originaux de musique populaire d'Ukraine, d'Armenie et des republiques de la Volga, des Tchouvaches et de Mordovie en Federation russe. Hubert Boone est aussi un musicien actif. Il a fonde en 1968 le groupe de musique populaire "De Vlier", il a cree le "Brabants Volksorkest" en 1978 puis, en 1993, "Polka Galop", un jeune ensemble de musique instrumentale populaire flamande. Depuis 1999, il est actif en outre dans l'ensemble musical "Limbrant". Wim Bosmans (Ixelles, 1952) a etudie la philologie germanique a l'Universite catholique de Bruxelles (autrefois Ufsal) et a l'Universite catholique de Louvain. Depuis 1974, il est collaborateur scientifique a temps partiel au Musee Instrumental de Bruxelles. Il a publie plusieurs etudes sur la musique traditionnelle des Pays-Bas, notamment des monographies sur la flute a une main et le fifre. In 2019, the Vitra Design Museum will publish the Atlas of Furniture Design, the definitive, encyclopedic overview of the history of modern furniture design. Featuring over 1700 objects by more than 500 designers and 121 manufacturers, it includes approximately 2800 images ranging from detailed object photographs to historical images documenting interiors, patents, brochures, and related works of art and architecture. The basis for the Atlas of Furniture Design is the collection held by the Vitra Design Museum, one of the largest of its kind with more than 7000 works. The book presents selected pieces by the most important designers of the last 230 years and documents key periods in design history, including early nineteenth-century industrial furniture in bentwood and metal, Art Nouveau and Secessionist pieces and works by protagonists of classical modernism and postwar design, as well as postmodern and contemporary pieces. The Atlas of Furniture Design employed a team of more than 70 experts and features over 550 detailed texts about key objects. In 1897, as a white oligarchy made plans to allow the United States to annex Hawai'i, native Hawaiians organized a massive petition drive to protest. Ninety-five percent of the native population signed the petition, causing the annexation treaty to fail in the U.S. Senate. This event was unknown to many contemporary Hawaiians until Noenoe K. Silva rediscovered the petition in the process of researching this book. With few exceptions, histories of Hawai'i have been based exclusively on English-language sources. They have not taken into account the thousands of pages of newspapers, books, and letters written in the mother tongue of native Hawaiians. By rigorously analyzing many of these documents, Silva fills a crucial gap in the historical record. In so doing, she refutes the long-held idea that native Hawaiians passively accepted the erosion of their culture and loss of their nation, showing that they actively resisted political, economic, linguistic, and cultural domination. Drawing on Hawaiian-language texts, primarily newspapers produced in the nineteenth century and early twentieth, Silva demonstrates that print media was central to social communication, political organizing, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and culture. A pioneer of the French Islamic archaeology in the Middle East, Monik Kervran (CNRS, lab The Orient & The Mediterranean) was first renowned for her excavations at Susa in Iran and the discovery of the Darius’ statue at the start of her career in 1972. She then directed in the 70’s and 80’s excavations on the Arabian coasts of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, at the main pre-Islamic and Islamic maritime centers of Qal’at al-Bahrain and Sohar. She also led researches in Central Asia and Eastern Iran, excavating Nishapur, and, since the 90’s, in the Indus delta where she opened excavations at Sehwan Sharif and Banbhore.
