Bruce Nightingale joined the British Council in 1965, but had spent the previous nine years gaining overseas experience, including a period as a district officer in the Colonial Service in Nigeria. His postings abroad included Malawi during the first six years of independence, Japan in the year of "Expo '70", Malaysia in its new industrializing phase, and Romania during its rapid decline. Service in London, in charge of the Council's film and video operations, was followed by Finland, and finally, by Ethiopia during the climax of the civil war and its aftermath. He retired in 1992.

Low- and middle-income countries face major challenges to their health systems. These include a high burden of communicable disease and an emerging non-communicable disease burden. Coverage of effective services and interventions is inadequate and often constrained by funding availability. At the same time, the international financing environment is changing rapidly, with new funding streams becoming available in part as a response to the challenges of meeting the Millennium Development Goals. These countries have taken a diversity of approaches to health care financing policies and programs to face the old and emerging challenges. This is increasingly accompanied by conceptual and applied research which is contributing to our understanding of how different financing mechanisms can contribute to the overall objectives of a health care system. Humans automatically categorize others in social perception. Some categorizations ­ race, gender, and age -- are so automatic that they are termed "primitive categories." As we categorize, we develop stereotypes about the categories. Researchers know much about racism and sexism, but comparatively little about prejudice based on age. The papers in this issue highlight the current empirical and theoretical work on understanding the origins and consequences of stereotyping and prejudice against older adults. With the aging baby boomer demographic, it is especially timely for researchers to work to understand how society can shed its institutionalized ageism and promote respect for elders.
