Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Dancing on the Edge
Set in a time of immense change, Dancing on the Edge tells the story of a black jazz group, the Louis Lester Band, as they rise to fame, entertaining guests at exclusive high society gatherings in 1930s London. While many recoil at the presence of black musicians in polite society, the capital's more progressive socialites, including younger members of the Royal Family, take the band under their wing. In this explosive five-part series, Stephen Poliakoff returns to television with his most ambitious work to date. Dancing on the Edge provides a new angle on an extraordinary time in history, giving us a piercingly original vision of Britain in the 1930s; a time of glamour, hardship, vibrant new music and financial meltdown. Combining the rich characterisation of Shooting The Past with the epic sweep of The Lost Prince and inspired by true stories of the era, Dancing on the Edge was produced by Ruby Film and Television for BBC2. Also included is the innovative epilogue to the whole drama, Interviewing Louis, where music journalist Stanley conducts a combative in-depth interview with Louis Lester. This funny and disturbing drama complements the main story perfectly while leading us towards a shocking and unexpected conclusion.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC King Lear: Language and Writing
Arden Student Skills: Language and Writing volumes offer a new type of study aid that combines lively critical insight with practical guidance on the writing skills you need to develop in order to engage fully with Shakespeare’s texts. The books’ core focus is on language: both understanding and enjoying Shakespeare’s complex dramatic language and expanding your own critical vocabulary as you respond to his plays. Each guide in the series will empower you to read and write about Shakespeare with increased confidence and enthusiasm. King Lear: Language and Writing reveals how the play’s elemental power springs from its language, which is at once simple, relentless and resonant, as well as from its full-blown double plot that multiplies unbearably both the follies and the pain of its protagonists. Chapters explore the play’s status as a tragedy, its stagecraft, primary source material and both its textual and theatre history. The ‘Writing Matters’ section at the end of each chapter provides suggestions for activities that can further enhance your understanding of the play. This is an indispensable guide to Shakespeare's rich and complex dramatic language and will improve and develop your critical writing skills.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Emotional Excess on the Shakespearean Stage: Passion's Slaves
This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched. Emotional Excess on the Shakespearean Stage demonstrates the links made between excess of emotion and madness in the early modern period. It argues that the ways in which today's popular and theatrical cultures judge how much is too much can distort our understanding of early modern drama and theatre. It argues that permitting the excesses of the early modern drama onto the contemporary stage might free actors and audiences alike from assumptions that in order to engage with the drama of the past, its characters must be just like us. The book deals with characters in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries who are sad for too long, or angry to the point of irrationality; people who laugh when they shouldn't or make their audiences do so; people whose selfhood has broken down into an excess of fragmentary extremes and who are labelled mad. It is about moments in the theatre when excessive emotion is rewarded and applauded — and about moments when the expression of emotion is in excess of what is socially acceptable: embarrassing, shameful, unsettling or insane. The book explores the broader cultures of emotion that produce these theatrical moments, and the theatre's role in regulating and extending the acceptable expression of emotion. It is concerned with the acting of excessive emotion and with acting emotion excessively. And it asks how these excesses are produced or erased, give pleasure or pain, in versions of early modern drama in theatre, film and television today. Plays discussed include Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Spanish Tragedy, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Measure for Measure, and Coriolanus.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Silent and Forgotten
Silent is the touching and provocative story of homeless McGoldrig who once had splendid things. But he has lost it all - including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. Silent has been described as 'a moving story, which, until its end, pulses with the erratic noise of life' (Irish Times), 'a must see if ever there was one' (The List), and as 'magnificent, remarkable' (Irish Independent). By the same writer, Forgotten features the interconnecting stories of four elderly people living in retirement homes and care facilities around Ireland, who range in age from 80 to 100 years old. Both challengingly dark and startlingly hilarious, Forgotten is 'an unequivocally beautiful piece' (Scotsman), 'beautifully written and vivid' (New Yorker), conveying 'the secrets, the hidden past, of the aged, and the dignity often behind their quaint seemingly innocuous bearing' (New York Times). Forgotten was produced by Fishamble: The New Play Company at over sixty Irish venues, in eight European countries, and in three US cities between 2007 and 2012. Silent was originally produced in 2011, also by Fishamble, winning the Scotsman Fringe First and the Herald Angel awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Argus Angel at the Brighton Festival 2012, as well as touring Ireland, Paris, Edinburgh, Los Angeles and New York. 'Kinevane has an extremely acute, innate and intuitive sense of comedy that enable him to tightrope across the gross and heartbreaking circumstances of life, in jest without sacrificing the poignant sadness of a given predicament' Irish Theatre Magazine

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Get Them Talking - Get Them Writing
An inspirational book that studies the development of mark-making skills in relation to 'talk' and provides age-appropriate activities to use with young children that will have a significant impact on their learning. There is so much that you can do with children to get them ready to write. Mark-making development in boys is statistically slower and less successful than girls. Bestselling author Alistair Bryce-Clegg believes that this has a small part to do with physical development and more to do with appropriate understanding and the planning of engaging activities. His book will help practitioners not only to understand the development stages of becoming a mark maker but also to provide tried and tested activities and interventions to use. Using these techniques, he believes they will see a significant increase in progress for both boys and girls! As the content is appropriate to stage of development and not age of child it is aimed at children of all ages - from the point that they begin to make marks. This is an accessible theory into practice book backed up with a 'how to' section which contains real examples of effective initiatives based on case studies in a variety of settings.

This compassionate play portrays the devastating effects of war on a typical Lancashire mill town and the suffering of everyday people. This Modern Classic edition includes a new preface by the author, plus a full introduction exploring the themes, social/historical context and characters.
