This is the gripping story of the Tippecanoe campaign of 1811: ‘The prophet’s battle’. It was a conflict born out of festering tensions inscribed by the 1795 Treaty of Greeneville, which had concluded the Northwestern Indian War and attempted to prevent white settlers’ encroaching onto newly defined Indian territories. For 16 years there had been peace, but in 1811 the number of settlers in the Ohio territory had swollen from 3,000 to 250,000. War was again coming to the North West. Within these pages John F. His constructions and inventions in the fields of industrial manufacturing, prefabrication, and the use of new materials like aluminum and corrugated iron as well as his design sketches are an abiding and significant influence on many architects and engineers today. The fourth volume of the complete works deals with Prouvé’s creative period from 1954 to 1984, covering 200 projects, including such major works as the Alpexpo exhibition halls in Grenoble, gas stations for Total, the pump room in Evian, curtain walls – for example for the Freie Universität (Free University) in Berlin and the Medical School of Erasmus University in Rotterdam – and his final work, the radar tower in Ouessant. From 1957 to 1970 Prouvé was also professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

Even before the spectacular success of its X-1 rocket-powered aircraft in breaking the ‘sound barrier’, the adventurous Bell Aircraft Corporation was already pushing ahead with a parallel project to build a second aircraft capable of far higher speeds. The X-2 (or Model 52) explored the equally uncertain technology of swept-back wings. Now common in modern conventional fighter aircraft, the Bell X-2 was revolutionary in using this type of airframe to probe Mach 3 and research the effects of extreme aerodynamic friction heat on airframes. Although both X-2s were destroyed in crashes after only 20 flights, killing two test pilots, the knowledge gained from the programme was invaluable in developing aircraft that could safely fly at such speeds. Using stunning artwork and historical photographs, this is the story of the plane that ultimately made the Lockheed Blackbird and Concorde possible.

Plant biotechnology applies to three major areas of plants and their uses: (1) control of plant growth and development; (2) protection of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses; and (3) expansion of ways by which specialty foods, biochemicals, and pharmaceuticals are produced. The topic of recent advances in plant biotechnology is ripe for consideration because of the rapid developments in this ?eld that have revolutionized our concepts of sustainable food production, cost-effective alt- native energy strategies, environmental bioremediation, and production of pla- derived medicines through plant cell biotechnology.
