Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Beyond Calvin: Union with Christ and Justification in Early Modern Reformed Theology (1517-1700)
The investigation of union with Christ and justification has been dominated by the figure of John Calvin. Calvins influence, however, has been exaggerated in our own day. Theologians within the Early Modern Reformed tradition contributed to the development of these doctrines and did not view Calvin as the normative theologian of the tradition. John V. Fesko, therefore, goes beyond Calvin and explores union with Christ and justification in the Reformation, Early Orthodox, and High Orthodox periods of the Reformed tradition and covers lesser known but equally important figures such as Juan de Valdes, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Girolamo Zanchi, William Perkins, John Owen, Francis Turretin, and Herman Witsius. The study also covers theologians that either lie outside or transgress the Reformed tradition, such as Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Faustus Socinus, Jacob Arminius, and Richard Baxter. By treating this diverse body of figures the study reveals areas of agreement and diversity on these two doctrines. The author demonstrates that among the diverse formulations, all surveyed Reformed theologians accord justification priority over sanctification within the broader rubric of union with Christ. Fesko shows that Reformed theologians affirm both union with Christ and the golden chain of salvation, ideas that moderns find incompatible. In sum, rather than reading an individual theologian isolated from his context, this study provides a contextual reading of union with Christ and justification in the Early Modern Reformed context. Jewish Lights Publishing The Imitation of Christ: Adapted from John Wesley's the Christian's Pattern Selections Annotated & Explained
Next to the Bible, THE IMITATION OF CHRIST is the most widely read devotional work within the Christian community. Thought to be compiled by fifteenth-century cleric Thomas à Kempis (c. 1380-1471), this spiritual classic focuses the contemporary God-seeker on a religion of the heart - a vital connection with God in our innermost being. It advocates the cultivation of virtues, like humility and purity of intention, by inviting the spirit of Jesus to dwell richly in our lives. It emphasises the need to translate that life of love into daily action. Now you can experience the timeless wisdom of this spiritual classic with no previous knowledge of late mediaeval Christianity. This SkyLight Illuminations edition, based on John Wesley's popular 1741 abridgment, renders these meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus in a way that is accessible to the contemporary reader. A substantive introduction and facing-page commentary places the work in its original context; clarifies the text's roots in the Bible, the early Church and mediaeval mysticism and explains its influence - spanning five hundred years - on spiritual luminaries from saints to popes and its continuing significance today.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Mapping Morality in Postwar German Women's Fiction: Christa Wolf, Ingeborg Drewitz, and Grete Weil
Analyzes Wolf's, Drewitz's, and Weil's views of individual responsibility in history, with reference to theories of memory and feminist ethics. Christa Wolf (1929-), Ingeborg Drewitz (1923-1986), and Grete Weil (1906-1999) occupy very different positions in postwar German literature, yet all three challenge readers to consider how individuals understand their roles in history and how they negotiate their personal responsibilities based on those roles. These three are, of course, by no means the only German writers to have dealt with such questions in the wake of the Third Reich. But Wolf, Drewitz, and Weil ground their projects in the family, an institution often left out of such inquiries, giving them a different starting point for moral reflection. Before looking closely at the three writers' views of the individual's role and responsibility, the book devotes a chapter to the examination of individual and collective memory, then a chapter to how feminist ethicists view moral responsibility. Chapters on the three writers' literary approachesto the questions follow: Wolf enacts a process of historical and geographic triangulation; Drewitz constructs concentric historical and social circles; Weil seeks to repair the historical ruptures of the Holocaust, creating new historical narratives and exploring the limitations of traditional bourgeois morality. Each of the three attempts to map a geography of morals that begins within the structures of the extended family but interrogates individual responsibility in an increasingly globalized environment. Michelle Mattson is Professor of German at Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd A Descriptive Catalogue of the Medieval Manuscripts of Corpus Christi College, Oxford: Western Manuscripts
The manuscripts of Corpus Christi College, Oxford present an extraordinary variety of items, from humanist texts associated with Erasmus to John Dee's alchemical books and many vernacular MSS. This is the first full catalogue, with a large number of illustrations. The College of Corpus Christi, Oxford, was a 'Renaissance' institution both as to its foundation date (1517) and the intention of its founder, Richard Fox, bishop of Winchester. Both Fox himself and his choice as the College's first President, John Claymond, were friends of Erasmus, who approved of the foundation and especially of its library. Fox intended his foundation to be a conduit of Italian humanism to Oxford and to the English clergy. In itsextraordinary variety, this collection is a challenge to the cataloguer. Some manuscripts relate to the programme of the College's founder and first President, but most of the manuscripts reflect the particular interests of collectors from the late sixteenth century onwards. John Dee's books for example, mostly small, unpretentious and often fragmentary or made up of fragments, constitute a gold-mine for the historian of medieval chemistry and alchemy. These are supplemented by an important group of astronomical, arithmetical and medical texts. There is a substantial clutch of twelfth- and thirteenth-century manuscripts from Lanthony Priory. Noteworthy, too, is the large number of manuscripts in several vernaculars: Old and Middle English and French, Old Irish, Catalan, and even a few words of fifteenth-century Czech. The bindings of the Corpus manuscripts have been wholly neglected. Many books retain important medieval bindings, some as early as the twelfth century, and a substantial number of beautiful blind-stamped bindings of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A special place in the collection is occupied by the approximately 1, 200 manuscript fragments, taken from bindings of books in the library in the late nineteenth century.

Rudolf Steiner Press Understanding Society: Through Spiritual-Scientific Knowledge Social Threefolding, Christ, Lucifer and Ahriman
In the uncertainty following the end of the First World War, Rudolf Steiner perceived a unique opportunity to establish a healthy social and political constitution. He began lecturing throughout post-war Germany, often to large audiences, about his social ideas. Here, speaking to a more intimate grouping at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, Steiner seeks to deepen the themes of social threefolding, showing specifically how new social thinking is integral to anthroposophy. Steiner speaks of the superficiality of the materialistic view of history, originating with the economic shift amongst the population at the time of the Reformation. Back in Egyptian-Chaldean times, initiates ruled out of spiritual impulses. Later, in the Greco-Roman period, priests had power over their congregations. Today, homo economicus – or `economic man’ – has become the dominant idea, with the capitalist and the banker taking control. But the healing of social relationships can only come about through different modes of thought; the life of spirit must be separated not only from politics but also from economics. True social understanding allows for comprehension of karma – the appreciation of each person’s individual destiny. In parallel, says Steiner, we should work towards a global consciousness, as true social ideas are founded on people feeling themselves to be citizens of the world. In an important corollary, Steiner studies the incarnations of three significant spiritual beings in human evolution: Lucifer, Christ and Ahriman. Lucifer incarnated in the third pre-Christian millennium, Christ incarnated at the dawn of a new age, whilst an incarnation of Ahriman in the West is immanent. Ahriman is preparing this incarnation by insidiously promoting various ideas, for example that economic security is sufficient for healthy public life. A new wisdom must be achieved out of free human will, says Steiner, or else we will succumb to Ahriman.

Skyhorse Publishing Overcoming the Blues: Finding Christ-Centered Hope and Joy through Serving Others
Nobody is immune to depression, not even the most faithful and dedicated Christians. Finding the strength to effectively cope with ongoing depression in one's life may seem like an insurmountable personal and faith challenge for many followers of Jesus. You may feel like you're useless, unworthy of joy, and a complete spiritual failure. While a number of books have been written on depression from a psychological perspective, Overcoming the Blues addresses spiritual concerns to provide hope and comfort for the faithful. As a counseling professor, minister, and licensed clinical pastoral therapist, Dr. Ryan Noel Fraser has recognized the ubiquity of depression among believers, as well as the overwhelming need for capable caregivers within the church. His revolutionary how-to guide offers practical guidance and holistic methods to relieve the distressing symptoms of depression in three Christ-centered ways: (1) Recognize God's abiding presence (2) Reach out to others (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) (3) Respect your limitations This book seeks to motivate, mentor, and mobilize sufferers of depression in the church to see that serving is so much more than merely a short-lived distraction from your own suffering; it can be a powerful and restorative antidote--a transformative way of life that facilitates healing and hope.

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Messiah and Scripture: Paul's "In Christ" Idiom in Its Ancient Jewish Context
J. Thomas Hewitt examines Paul's development and uses of the expression "in Christ," or "in messiah," with reference to conventions of ancient Jewish messiah discourse. While messiah speculation in antiquity does not evince a widespread, coherent messianic ideology, ancient Jewish messiah texts do share a common trait - the creative reappropriation of scripture for portraying messiahs. Ancient Jewish messiah discourse is thus both traditional, being shaped by the idioms and imagery of scripture, and innovative, as those materials are recast in novel depictions and expressions. As a participant in this interpretative enterprise, Paul found resources in scriptural traditions concerning Abraham's seed and Daniel's heavenly man for generating his own distinctive conceptions of messiahship, conceptions he often articulated with his hallmark expression "in Christ."

Christl Kiener Studies in Biodynamic Embryology: Concept, Selesction and Editing by Konrad Obermeier
In his writings Blechschmidt consistently accessed and described the subject of human embryology from the viewpoint of biodynamic metabolic fields and focuses his attention on the question: How does human form arise? Blechschmidt wrote and published exclusively in German. It was mostly through a German/English bi-lingual volume published by Karger (“The Stages of Human Development Before Birth”, 1960) and an exceptional cooperation with his co-author R. F. Gasser (“Biokinetics and Biodynamics of Human Differentiation”, 1978), that his work became partly available to an international English speaking audience. “The Beginnings of Human Life” (1977) was written primarily for the general public, but is no longer in print. The publication of Brian Freeman's translation of “The Ontogenetic Basis of Human Anatomy” (2004), contributed to a growing interest in Blechschmidt's ideas. Slowly osteopaths, Structural Integrators, cranial practitioners and other therapists began to appreciate his work. The books mentioned above offer both a general and comprehensive access to the morphological cosmos described by Blechschmidt but, unfortunately, they are only partly available at the moment. However, there are a number of unnoticed scientific articles already translated into English that offer a more detailed and deeper, specific insight into this elaborate universe of shape and form. The book you have here is a compilation of a number of those individual articles.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Aging and Old-Age Style in Günter Grass, Ruth Klüger, Christa Wolf, and Martin Walser: The Mannerism of a Late Period
Explores the performance of aging in the "late style" of Günter Grass, Ruth Klüger, Christa Wolf, and Martin Walser. Demographers say that by the year 2060, every seventh person in Germany will be aged eighty or older, and every third person over sixty-five. The prediction for other Western countries is scarcely different. Indeed, the aging society is seen by some as a graver threat than even global warming, with potentially unmanageable tensions relating to intergenerational relationships, work and benefits, and flows of people. This book explores the representation and performance of aging in recent "late-style" German-language fiction. It situates the authors chosen as case studies -- Günter Grass, Ruth Klüger, Christa Wolf, and Martin Walser -- in their biographical and social contexts and explores the significance of their aesthetic figuring of aging for debates raging both in Germany and internationally. In particular, the book looks at gender, generations, and trauma and their impact on how writers "narrativize" aging. Finally, it examines the "timeliness" of these different representations and late-style performances of aging in the context of the shift of social, political, and economic power away from the declining societies of theWest to the ascendant societies of the East. Stuart Taberner is Professor of Contemporary German Literature, Culture, and Society at the University of Leeds.

Peeters Publishers Salvation Through Participation: An Examination of the Notion of the Believers' Corporate Unity with Christ in Early Christian Soteriology
The foundation of many of the earliest Christian's salvific conceptions is the notion of the corporate unity between Christ and the believers. The essential role that the notion of corporate identity plays is evident in various salvific contexts. This study examines four different contexts or expressions in which the earliest believers' soteriological interpretation of Jesus' death and resurrection finds expression; namely, Paul's understanding and usage of the "dying for" and "surrender" formulas, his conception of the believers' eschatological resurrection, and his understanding of the Lord's Supper. On the basis of this investigation, it becomes evident that the corporate understanding that Christian believers are united with Christ is one of the essential foundations of the earliest believer's conception of salvation. Paul's essential notion of salvation is that of participationism. Because of their unity with Christ, the believers are conceived by Paul as sharing or participating in Christ's fate, including both his death and his resurrection.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Re-Writing Jesus: Christ in 20th-Century Fiction and Film
At the heart of Christian theology lies a paradox unintelligible to other religions and to secular humanism: that in the person of Jesus, God became man, and suffered on the cross to effect humanity’s salvation. In his dual nature as mortal and divinity, and unlike the impassable God of other monotheisms, Christ thus became accessible to artistic representation. Hence the figure of Jesus has haunted and compelled the imagination of artists and writers for 2,000 years. This was never more so than in the 20th Century, in a supposedly secular age, when the Jesus of popular fiction and film became perhaps more familiar than the Christ of the New Testament. In Re-Writing Jesus: Christ in 20th Century Fiction and Film Graham Holderness explores how writers and film-makers have sought to recreate Christ in work as diverse as Anthony Burgess’s Man of Nazareth and Jim Crace’s Quarantine, to Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ. These works are set within a longer and broader history of ‘Jesus novels’ and ‘Jesus films’, a lineage traced back to Ernest Renan and George Moore, and explored both for their reflections of contemporary Christological debates, and their positive contributions to Christian theology. In its final chapter, the book draws on the insights of this tradition of Christological representation to creatively construct a new life of Christ, an original work of theological fiction that both subsumes the history of the form, and offers a startlingly new perspective on the biography of Christ.

Oxford University Press Inc Metaphors of Eucharistic Presence: Language, Cognition, and the Body and Blood of Christ
In Metaphors of Eucharistic Presence: Language, Cognition, and the Body and Blood of Christ, Stephen R. Shaver brings together the fields of cognitive linguistics and liturgical theology to propose a new approach to the ecumenically controversial issue of eucharistic presence. Drawing from the work of cognitive linguists such as George Lakoff, Gilles Fauconnier, and Mark Turner, and theologians such as Robert Masson and John Sanders, Shaver argues that there is no clear division between literal and figurative language: rather, human cognition is grounded in sensorimotor experience, and phenomena such as metaphor and conceptual blending are basic building blocks of thought. Complex realities are ordinarily understood by means of more than one metaphor. Inherited models of eucharistic presence, then, are not necessarily mutually exclusive but can serve as complementary members of a shared ecumenical repertoire. The central element of this repertoire is the motif of identity--the eucharistic bread and wine are the body and blood of Christ--grounded in the Synoptic and Pauline institution narratives. From a cognitive standpoint, this metaphor can be understood both as figurative and as true in the proper sense, resolving a dichotomy that has divided the churches since the Reformation. The identity motif is complemented by four major non-scriptural motifs: representation, change, containment, and conduit. Inaugurating a new interdisciplinary conversation, this book contributes to ongoing ecumenical reconciliation not only by addressing eucharistic presence but also by demonstrating an approach which may hold promise in other historically controverted areas. Meanwhile for cognitive linguists it offers an intriguing case study in the application of that discipline to theological questions.

SPCK Publishing Serve: The core mission of the body of Christ: Six studies in Nehemiah
Having been thrust into crisis and confusion, the Church is entering a season of change. Together, we need to restore, renew and rebuild. Nehemiah shows us how. We need to restore our hearts, asking God to break our hearts for what breaks his. We need to renew our focus, allowing God to give us vision for the full ministry of Jesus. And we need to rebuild our world, looking out to the community around us. Through six insightful Bible studies, Debra Green shows us how to practically apply the age-old wisdom of Nehemiah to the cultural moment we find ourselves in today.
