The Road Untravelled began life as Sherin Aminossehe’s personal response to the geographical constraints of the COVID-19 lockdown – a drawing a day, providing relief from the daily routine of work and home-schooling. However, on a friend’s advice it became a much broader enterprise, as Sherin began to fulfil commissions in return for a charitable donation to SSAFA for people unable to travel, her art offering them an imaginative escape to the locations they longed for.This exquisite collection ranges from the United States to Nepal via London, Italy, Iran and many destinations besides. Alongside the drawings feature the personal responses of some of the people who commissioned them. Together they provide a moving record of the importance of place in our most precious memories and a testament to the consoling power of art in the most challenging times. Proceeds from the sales of The Road Untravelled will be paid in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been providing lifelong support to the UK’s Armed Forces and their families since 1885. Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a unique 40-acre site housing a living collection of plants for research and teaching use by the University of Cambridge. From Poland with Music: 100 Years of Polish Composers Abroad (1918–2018) is the first comprehensive treatment of the theme of emigration among Polish composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The book focuses on classical composers (e.g. Paderewski, Weinberg, Panufnik), but extends to important figures from the worlds of jazz and film music (Komeda, Makowicz, Kaczmarek, Korzeniowski). The Villa Wolkonsky, Rome, is the incongruously named official residence of the British ambassador to Italy. Nestled within the city’s Aurelian Wall, the site’s history dates back to antiquity, its gardens dominated by the remains of a first-century imperial Roman aqueduct. In the 19th century a remarkable Russian princess, Zenaïde Wolkonsky, turned it into a country home and salon d’art with such illustrious visitors as Gogol, Turgenev and Fanny Mendelssohn. Following generations excavated Roman tombs, collected antiquities and built a new grand mansion, before selling the Villa to the German government in 1922. It remained the German embassy, being much enlarged, until the Liberation of Rome in 1944. After the war the UK bought it, first as embassy offices and residence and, since 1971, as the residence for the ambassador and other staff. In this handsomely illustrated volume, Sir John Shepherd, former ambassador, has undertaken new research to debunk long-held myths and present, for the first time, a comprehensive history of this hidden Roman treasure.
