He demonstrates to the general reader and to the student of philosophy alike how the radical views on truth, objectivity and rationality expressed in Rorty’s widely-read essays on contemporary culture and politics derive from his earliest work in the philosophy of mind and language. The Wars of the Roses were quarrels within the Plantagenet family, of which Richard’s dynasty, the House of York, was one branch. They were about family trees – the capacity of family relationships both to unite and to divide – and notoriously about the slaughter of cousins, in-laws, brothers, and nephews. The House of York won the first war, with Richard’s elder brother becoming king as Edward IV. The 1460s are about the explosion of King Edward IV’s family – his brothers (including Richard), his wife and in-laws, and his own offspring – and end in a trial of strength between them. The 1470s are about a second explosion of the House of York, its division into separate nuclear families competing against each other, about the kings’ preferences, and in 1483 a sudden violent resolution following Edward IV’s death. Richard III claimed to be his brother’s heir. The Yorkist establishment refused and shared in Richard’s destruction. Richard Bennett (1899–1971) was a nationally known printmaker, painter, and illustrator, born in Ireland but raised in Washington State. He later divided his time between New York City and Seattle. A leading children’s book author and illustrator, he received national recognition for his woodblock prints and engravings. He was part of the inner circle of leading Northwest artists including Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson. In New York he became close to a group of artists and scholars that included the Abstract Expressionist Theodoros Stamos, etcher Thomas Handforth, and the scholar Edmond Tolk. Among the many children’s books he illustrated are the Paul Bunyon stories, Treasure Island, and Betty MacDonald’s The Egg and I and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. David Martin places Bennett's work in the context of major American printmakers and illustrators and the changes in book production inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement.

An artist's book of “social science fiction” presenting new work and writing by Richard Prince Richard Prince (born 1949) continues his revival of the Fulton Ryder imprint with an artist’s book that is both a monograph of new artworks and an expansive written statement on art history, personal biography and the contemporary impulse to create self-images. At first glance, the New Paintings are in a similar vein as Prince's New Portraits. However, unlike that series, the New Paintings focuses on portraits of painters painting on Instagram, very often with back to the camera, facing away from the viewer. The resulting images are ambiguously manipulated; the series is self-described as an act of “social science fiction.” The image captions, integral to the artwork, contain a dense “Bird Talk” text, including ambiguous autobiography and art history commentary.
