In August 1914, recently orphaned Cooper Harrison arrives in El Paso to live with grandparents she's never met. The minute the fifteen-year-old steps off the train, everything seems wrong. The heat is stifling, her grandfather Luther is cold and appraising and, worse, doesn't even mention the recent loss of both parents. Her grandmother, Angelica, is remote and child-like and wears only black and diamonds. When Cooper asked to come live with her grandparents, she wanted to help in the family antique business and soon shows her aptitude for the field. But, she discovers that Luther not only runs a shady concern but also profits from the Mexican Revolution smuggling arms across the border. Luther leaves for Mexico with a wagonload of bullets hidden in sacks of corn and is kidnapped by Pancho Villa's men. Cooper realizes she's the only one to carry the ransom to Villa's camp. She meets a Hollywood actor and cameraman - in El Paso to film Villa's life - and convinces them to join her in the attempt to rescue her grandfather. The ensuing adventure takes the reader on wild ride deep into the Mexican countryside.

Oxford University Press Inc The Empowered Citizens Guide: 10 Steps to Passing a Law that Matters to You
For years, Pat Libby has been teaching everyday citizens how to pass laws. Most of them knew next to nothing about the legislative process when they got started, yet many surprised themselves by passing a law on their first try. The Empowered Citizens Guide provides an easy, 10-step framework that breaks down the legislative process into bite-sized pieces. For those who are passionate about creating change in their communities, cities, or states this book provides a simple recipe to make a difference. Libby provides an explanation of terms related to advocacy and lobbying as well as the legal rules for public charities that want to lobby. A detailed overview of the ten steps is illustrated by a real-life example of how a mother, whose son's addiction was fueled by over-the-counter drugs, fought alongside a few friends to pass a law that addressed a root of the problem. The Empowered Citizens Guide is the perfect text for those who want to create meaningful change.

Collective Ink Sea Serpents: On the Hunt in British Columbia: or, How I Went to the Bottom of the Ocean, and a Giant Fish Accidentally got me Drunk
Pat Spain is used to doing things that he acknowledges are not normal — such as lying in a pit of 200,000 snakes or having a pygmy village take excessive interest in his bathroom habits. /Sea Serpents: On the Hunt in British Columbia/ chronicles the coolest thing this host of multiple wildlife-adventure TV series has done yet — traveling 1,000 feet underwater in a three-man sub. Follow Spain, and the National Geographic film crew that went with him, as he sets sail on a commercial fishing boat with a dozen angry men; plays a dangerous, absolutely bonkers sport; almost falls off a mountain while drunkenly hiking; and then some. Spain puts his marine biology degree to good use by getting drunk off the fumes of a pickled specimen of the largest bony fish on Earth, all in an effort to track down the truth behind stories of a giant Canadian sea serpent. The answer to the mystery probably isn’t what you’re thinking.

Collective Ink 200,000 Snakes: On the Hunt in Manitoba: or, How I Found a New Beginning at the Bottom of a Giant Pit of Snakes
Pat Spain was living the life he had always dreamed of. He had just finished filming his first National Geographic TV series Beast Hunter, put in an offer on his first house with his girlfriend, was in the best physical shape he’d ever been in, had paid off the massive debt he’d incurred filming a web-based wildlife series and was getting to hang out with his TV and punk-rock idols like Harry Marshall, Henry Rollins and Brady Barr when he started getting stomach pains. A diagnosis of stage-3 colon cancer brought Pat’s world crashing down around him in an instant. He went from planning a press tour and an appearance on The Tonight Show to learning how to change an ostomy bag, re-learning how to walk, and finding out if he liked pot brownies. On the Hunt in Manitoba is the darkly comedic story of how Pat became a wildlife TV host, lost his dream job, almost lost his life and came back from the depths the only way he knew how - covered in 200,000 snakes.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC BBC Sports Report: A Celebration of the World's Longest-Running Sports Radio Programme: Shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book Awards 2023
SHORTLISTED FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2023 - SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT BOOK OF THE YEAR Sports Report is as much a 75-year history of sport as a BBC radio institution and Pat Murphy pays handsome tribute to a programme that is still followed affectionately by millions. For nearly 75 years, one BBC programme has been a constant factor in chronicling the way sport is covered, in all its many facets. It has been a window on the sporting world all over the globe – packed tightly into every Saturday evening for the bulk of the year. First broadcast in 1948, Sports Report is the longest-running radio sporting programme in the world and one of the BBC’s hardy perennials. Pat Murphy has been a reporter on the programme since 1981 and here he sifts comprehensively through the experiences of his contemporaries and those who made their mark on Sports Report in earlier decades. He hears from commentators, reporters, producers, presenters and the production teams who regularly achieved the broadcasting miracle of getting a live programme on air, without a script, adapting as the hour of news, reaction and comment unfolded. Drawing on unique access from the BBC Archives Unit, he highlights memorable moments from Sports Report, details the challenges faced in getting live interviews on air from draughty, noisy dressing-room areas and celebrates the feat of just a small production team in the studio who, somehow, get the show up and running every Saturday, with the clock ticking implacably on.
