First exhibited at the Stuyvesant Hall in New York in 1851, Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware captured the imagination of many Americans searching for national symbols in a time of sectionalism and disunity. Despite Leutze’s aspirations, the exhibition became an opportunity for critics of history painting to stake their positions. As suggested by the book’s title, Leutze’s epic painting is a touchstone in the evolution of American history painting. It represents a triumphant climax of the American adoption of the Grand Manner, inherited from eighteenth-century English painting, and portends its seemingly inevitable demise. From the painting’s gargantuan size, which fitted it only for a grand, public setting, to its focus on an already deified public hero, Leutze’s painting presumed a cultural as well as a political consensus—a consensus that proved illusory at best. Sind staatliche Entscheidungen gerade dann auf verfahrensrechtliche Vorgaben angewiesen, wenn das materielle Recht Entscheidungsspielräume belässt? In einer vergleichenden Gegenüberstellung von Verwaltungs- und Verfassungsrecht zeigt Jochen Rauber, dass die Vorstellung, Schwächen des materiellen Rechts ließen sich durch ergänzende Verfahrensanforderungen ausgleichen, zwar weit verbreitet ist, doch auf Voraussetzungen beruht, die zu selten hinterfragt werden. Weder bedarf es eines solchen Ausgleichs durch Verfahren stets, wenn das materielle Recht den Inhalt einer Entscheidung nur vage vorzeichnet. Noch können die Verfahrensanforderungen durchweg leisten, was sich die Dogmatik von ihnen verspricht. Und auch wenn sie es könnten, lässt es das Grundgesetz keinesfalls immer zu, auf materiellrechtliche Direktiven zu verzichten, sofern nur das Verfahren ausreichend dicht geregelt ist.

In der öffentlichen Diskussion in Europa wird Mission meist als problematisch empfunden und stattdessen ein Dialog der Religionen eingefordert. Jochen Teuffel zeigt dagegen im Kontext Chinas und Südostasiens auf, dass gerade christliche Mission mit dem Prinzip Muttersprache genuin rezeptionsbestimmt ist und damit nicht zur Zerstörung anderer Kulturen führt. In außereuropäischen Kulturen, die auf einem organisch-moralischem Lebenszusammenhang basieren, wird die christliche Lehre vielmehr als effektive Wohlergehenslehre (Diätetik) angenommen, die zudem Minderheitsethnien in deren kulturellen Identität stärkt. In der Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage nach der Übersetzung des Gottesbegriffs in andere Sprachen wird deutlich gemacht, dass JHWH als der lebensentscheidende Name nicht mit der Idee "Gott" gleichgesetzt werden kann. Europäisches Gottdenken steht vielmehr dem biblischen Namenszeugnis entgegen und führt zu Religion als einer weltanschaulichen Ideologie. Gegen einen religionsgeschichtlichen Relativismus in Sachen Jahwe stellt der Autor das auf den Schriftkanon beschränkte Namensgedächtnis heraus. Er macht weiterhin deutlich, dass eine religionslose Wahrnehmung christlicher Mission zwangsläufig Toleranz bedingt. Mission als Namenszeugnis richtet sich auf die Kirche aus, die aus dem Pascha-Mysterium Christi lebt. Unter dem Bild einer eschatologischen "Spielgemeinschaft" gewinnen die missionarische Kirche sowie evangelischer Gehorsam eine neue Bedeutung.
