Rowman & Littlefield Letters from Leaders: Personal Advice For Tomorrow's Leaders From The World's Most Influential People
Possibly no one on Earth personally knows as many people at the helms of nations, businesses, religions, charitable organizations, and institutes of learning as Henry O. Dormann—founder, chairman, and editor-in-chief of LEADERS magazine, whose circulation is limited to such leading figures. Here, he brings together the first-ever exclusive collection of wisdom and inspiration addressed to young people from the world’s most influential people—advice on leadership, goal achievement, public service, and life journeys. Letters from Leaders is a beautifully designed book comprising nearly eighty letters from those who have done so much to shape our world today—from Muhammad Ali to four U.S. Presidents, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and King Abdullah II of Jordan, and the Dalai Lama; from Cathie Black to T. Boone Pickens, Muriel Siebert, and Donald Trump. The letters, some as facsimile reproductions of handwritten originals, are each introduced with a biographical note by Dormann. As put so aptly by Dormann in his introduction, “All kings and queens, presidents, Nobel Laureates, chairmen and chairwomen, CEOs, and world leaders have one thing in common: They want what they have achieved to be useful and to be handed over to a younger generation. . . . The leaders in these pages have `lived’ and now offer their experiences as a treasure to ambitious and open minds—those who want to be something in life.”

Rowman & Littlefield 48 Hours of Kristallnacht: Night Of Destruction/Dawn Of The Holocaust
On the nights of November 9 and 10, 1938, rampaging mobs throughout Germany and the newly acquired territories of Austria and Sudetenland freely attacked Jews in the street, in their homes and at their places of work and worship. At least 96 Jews were killed and hundreds more injured, as many as 2,000 synagogues were burned, almost 7,500 Jewish businesses were destroyed, cemeteries and schools were vandalized, and 30,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps. This pogrom has come to be called Kristallnacht, "the Night of Broken Glass." Although numerous anti-Jewish regulations had been adopted prior to Kristallnacht, these measures had only imposed restrictions on German Jews' economic activity and occupational opportunities. Prior to Kristallnacht, the Jews had little reason to believe their physical safety was at risk. That all changed 70 years ago this coming November. The events of that night were the beginning of the Holocaust. It is fitting that a book record the events of this seminal historical event on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht. This book provides an account of the incidents immediately preceding the attacks on November 9-10, an oral history that provides a minute-by-minute and hour-by-hour account of what happened during the pogroms, and an analysis of the immediate aftermath and why the Holocaust can be dated from this evening.

The story of a Nepalese who has spent his entire life safeguarding an endangered speciesThis new release is a spirited yet humble account of one man’s scientific career and personal journey to save the endangered rhinoceros in his native Nepal. Rowman & Littlefield Wolves at the Door: The True Story Of America's Greatest Female Spy
Virginia Hall left her Baltimore home in 1931 to enter the Foreign Service and went to work for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) when Hitler was building toward the peak of his power in Europe. She was assigned to France, where she helped the Resistance movement, escaped prisoners of war, and American Allied paratroopers. By 1942 she was considered so dangerous to the Gestapo that she had to escape over the Pyrenees mountains—on an artificial leg, no less. When she got to England, she was reassigned to France by the OSS, disguised as an old peasant woman. She helped capture 500 German soldiers and kill more than 150, while she sabotaged Nazi communications and transportation. Hitler’s forces were hot on her trail, however, and her daring intelligence activities and indomitable spirit defied the expectations of even the Allies until the very end of the war. Her story was ignored for more than fifty years, and this book now brings Virginia Hall’s story to patriots young and old.

Rowman & Littlefield Dunks, Doubles, Doping: How Steroids Are Killing American Athletics
Steroids have been made out to be the modern plague of the day. The media chastize athletes who use them and sentence users to an early death. Outspoken critics claim there's a laundry list of horrific, irreversible side effects. But the truth, as HBO may have summed up best in their special programming on the subject, is that despite all the smoke, there's no fire. Hardly a spark. In Dunks, Doubles, Doping, Nathan Jendrick offers a researched, unbiased view on anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. The truth is that steroids didn't kill Lyle Alzado, Steve Bechler or Ken Caminiti. The truth is that steroids won't be the cause of death for Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, or Marion Jones--athletes accused of drug use. The one thing that steroids are killing though, is sports. Steroids have ruined the landscape of competition not by their chemical properties, but by the massive hysteria that surrounds them in the media, in gyms and in the stands of stadiums. And it's all in the name of money. Fans are turned off by the scandals and adolescents, who might be the only ones at a real health risk by using steroids, are putting the future of sports on their shoulders, and on the line, by trying to get big unnaturally too early. Dunks, Doubles, Doping includes interviews with top athletes, physicians and personalities while covering and revealing the truth behind steroids and confronting the new horizon of cheating: Gene doping. 3D is a can't-miss if you want the truth behind America's latest sports scandal.

Rowman & Littlefield 101 Trail Riding Tips: Helpful Hints For Backcountry And Pleasure Riding
One of the great joys of horseback riding is to be able to leave the beaten path for such purposes as hunting, fishing or camping, or simply for the pure pleasure of being out in nature. To ensure that you and your horse are enjoying the tail in the safest and most efficient ways, 101 Trail Riding Tips presents a broad palette of advice, including selecting a good trail and/or pack horse, training for safety and responsiveness, choosing tack and other gear, and coping with a wide variety of terrains. For example: Add tapaderos--Valued by the cavalrymen and vaqueros of the past, and still standard equipment for field trial aficionados, who follow their dogs through brush and bramble, tapaderos are all too neglected by today's trail riders. "Taps" protect your feet from rain and snow and prevent their being snagged and scratched by branches. More important, tapaderos prevent that most horrifying accident, a foot slipping all the way through the stirrup and the rider being dragged after a fall. Tapaderos with oversized stirrups allow you to wear bulky cold weather boots during winter. They'll protect your feet from splash when you ford a stream and your exuberant horse makes things worse by pawing in the water. Extremely valuable for all riders, tapaderos should be mandatory equipment on any child's saddle. Here's a guide that's sure to increase the enjoyment of any trail ride, anytime and anywhere.

In this revised edition of her groundbreaking original volume, Zeni Fox emphasizes the crucial relationship between lay ecclesial ministers and the Church's response to them in light of the many developments in recent years. Written in a clear, crisp style, the book is divided into three parts: Part one describes the present reality, both sociological research about who these new lay professionals are and a review of the ways in which theologians are reflecting upon this new phenomenon. The second part explores the new reality from the standpoint of tradition, including Scripture, the documents of Vatican II and the work of U.S. bishops. The final part assesses this reality in light of the tradition, and outlines steps needed to more fully integrate lay leaders into the fabric of the Church.

A longtime leader among liberal Catholics lays out a practical program for democratizing and opening up the Church from the local parish and diocese level up, drawing on the unrealized potential of models and reforms through history. As background he especially focuses on the Enlightenment reform movement in 19th-century Germany that presaged the reforms proposed by Vatican Council II, many of which are still unfulfilled or even reversed. He also discusses the remarkably democratic and lay-involving practices of the Catholic Church in early America. He concludes with a draft constitution for parishes and dioceses to adapt.

Rowman & Littlefield Nourishing Faith Through Fiction: Reflections of the Apostles' Creed in Literature and Film
In Nourishing Faith through Fiction, John May passionately shows us that alongside religious tradition and Sacred Scripture, the books we read and films we see profoundly affect who we are and how we view the world, By exploring nearly one hundred works of fiction, this book invites us to see how stories both carry religious meaning and affect our whole being at the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual levels. May uses the Apostles' Creed - the most universally accepted creed within Western Christian churches - as his foundation for understanding faith as "a personal commitment to God's initiative of salvation revealed in Jesus Christ and sustained today by their life-giving spirit." He then divides his book into three parts according to the persons of the Trinity - "Stories of the Creator," "Stories of the Savior," and "Stories of the Lifegiver" - and looks deeply into works of literary and cinematic imagination that fit into each category to see if and how they reflect Christianity's distinct worldview in how we relate to God, others, and ourselves.

Rowman & Littlefield Re-Imagining Life Together in America: A New Gospel of Community
America is known for, and prides itself on, its individualism. But bubbling beneath the surface of rugged independence is a hunger for community, for connectedness, for solidarity. While much of the literature on the importance of community—ranging from Bellah's Habits of the Heart to Wuthnow's Loose Connections to Putnam's Bowling Alone—affirms the central role of churches in helping bring people together, none of them treats in depth the role of the local churches in revisioning community. To remedy this omission, Re-Imagining Life Together in America offers a bold message of hope that the Christian tradition and American churches provide vital resources for reforming the prevailing individualistic social order into one of unity and solidarity. Co-authored by Chestnut Hill professors Hall Taussig, a United Methodist pastor, and Catherine Nerney, S.S.J., a Roman Catholic sister, Re-Imagining Life in Together in America is grounded in both rigorous scholarship and rich ministerial experience that is both interdenominational and ecumenical. Well written and highly accessible, this book interweaves a thorough review of developments in Christian community from the first century to the present with powerful new discoveries in scriptural, theological, and historical research that has uncovered deep communal strands in the foundational literature and notions of Christianity. The result is a profound call for the renewal of Christian community and churches as crucial models and inspirations for the new search for wholeness in America. A timely book for Christian leaders, Roman Catholic and Protestant, and especially educated lay leaders in local settings and pastoral leadership. Ideal for parish and congregational study groups, upper-level undergraduates, seminarians, and graduate students in theology, Scripture, spirituality, sociology, and anthropology.

Rowman & Littlefield Handbook of Special Education
This book introduces readers to key concepts and issues in the evolving field of special education. Arguably, over the past thirty years, no other area of education has been as radically transformed as the provision of services to children with disabilities. Since the mid 1970s, special education has steadily grown to reach fully 12% of the U.S. student population in grades K-12, and millions of children from birth to age five. Despite its promise of equal access, special education has become a controversial field in many respects. Critics point to its high cost, questionable pedagogical effectiveness, and differential outcomes across localities, family income levels, and ethnicities. The more typical approach in the literature highlights the legal and procedural mandates that dominate the discourse on educating the disabled student, but fails to explore the underlying assumptions and inconsistencies that make this area of education a controversial and still unsettled enterprise. This handbook departs from the traditional books in this field by focusing on the ways that special education policies and practices are enacted, rather than highlighting only their intended outcomes. Contributors to this text focus on defining commonly used terms and professional jargon in order to give interested readers access and insight into the field of special education and its associated practices. Some of the subjects included in this volume are the history of special education, disability and society, law and special education, pedagogy, policies and practices, and research in special education.

Rowman & Littlefield International Research on the Impact of Accountability Systems: Teacher Education Yearbook XV
International Research on the Impact of Accountability Systems: Teacher Education Yearbook XV presents multiple perspectives from well-known teachers and researchers involved in the creation and maintenance of accountability systems, both nationally and globally. These essays will help readers make well-informed and productive decisions when designing and assessing these kinds of systems. Rowman & Littlefield Women Leading School Systems: Uncommon Roads to Fulfillment
Most published research on the superintendency has failed to examine the voices of female superintendents. Today, white males make up approximately 85% of superintendents, rendering female responses to the superintendency almost nonexistent. Women Leading School Systems, commissioned by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), provides a historical overview of women in top leadership positions. This study examines what drives some female educators to accept the challenge of becoming a superintendent and what drives others to remain in middle management. The authors also profile a number of women who spend their lives at the top of the school system. This comprehensive book is the only national study entirely dedicated to women's leadership.

Rowman & Littlefield Innocence Denied: A Guide to Preventing Sexual Misconduct by Teachers and Coaches
As suggested by Edward Stancik, a special investigator for the New York City school system, there is no epidemic of sexual misconduct in schools. Still the practice in many schools of looking the other way, ignoring such behaviors, and maintaining a public posture that 'it can't happen here' is off target. Sexual misconduct does occur in many secondary schools, and in most cases the response is limited to warning teachers and coaches about the legal aspects and liabilities involved. Here, William Fibkins argues that these approaches only make teachers and coaches unwilling to offer help to needy students. In the end, educators are still at risk because they are left without effective training on how to set boundaries and carry on helpful supervision and monitoring. To help eliminate sexual misconduct in schools, this book provides step-by-step training procedures that can be used as part of the schools' staff development program to teach educators about the importance of setting boundaries. Real-life case studies documenting inappropriate teacher-student relationships are included. To learn more, visit www.williamfibkins.com.

Rowman & Littlefield Bridging the Learning/Assessment Gap: Showcase Teaching
Continuing dramatic developments in the ability of neuroscientists to peer inside the brain to discover its incredible intricacy places awesome responsibility on all educators to "do the right thing" for their students. Here, the authors offer readers powerful brain-compatible and research-based teaching and learning strategies based on how the brain works. This book will help answer questions about why some approaches to teaching are more successful than others. This is critically important because of new demands for increasing accountability. On one hand, each state has developed very specific standards and expectations for students; on the other, there is rigorous testing. The missing link is to know which instructional practices support teachers as they prepare students for increased expectations. Bridging the Learning/Assessment Gap: Shows how students learn in non-technical language, Discusses the concepts that most neuroscientists agree upon about the brain and how it learns, Provides specific teaching strategies to enhance instruction, Offers a number of strategies to help the learner , Highlights striking examples of powerful strategies used by current teachers. The need is urgent; the research is available. The challenge is to not fall prey to unfounded claims that a new strategy is proven by brain research. Will be of interest to teachers, administrators, curriculum planners, staff development trainers, and teacher education institutions.

Rowman & Littlefield Principals Under Pressure: The Growing Crisis
Alexander W. Wiseman presents the arguments, rationales, and explanations for what American principals do by looking at the international context in which the American educational system is situated and in which American school principals operate. This book offers a combination of background, theoretical perspective, data analysis, and policy recommendations founded upon evidence derived from empirical research. While books and articles touting the benefits of strong "leadership" have dominated popular principal literature, the managerial activity of principals is a topic of increasing importance but little attention. Being a principal is not about taking personal charge as much as it is about assembling and directing an excellent team and providing trusted team members with the resources and opportunities to do the best work they are capable of doing. Being able to be invisible, or 'lead from behind,' is one of the best characteristics that many 'good' principals have. This book provides an explanation for why this is so and principles for how to avert the growing crisis for American school principals.

Rowman & Littlefield Pirates Aboard!: Forty Cases of Piracy Today and What Bluewater Cruisers Can Do About It
In 1895, Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail alone around the world, scattered thumbtacks on the sole of Spray to repel an attack by intruders on Tierra Del Fuego. In December 2001, an attack on Sir Peter Blake's yacht in Brazil resulted in his death. "Pirates Aboard!" deals with recent cases of piracy studied by author Klaus Hympendahl, who interviewed the victims of about 40 cases. He asks them what lessons they learned from their hostile encounter and what they would suggest others do differently to avoid (or just survive) similar incidents. He then gives an appraisal of which areas in the world are the most dangerous, including Somalia, the Gulf of Aden, Venezuela, Guatemala, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and parts of Brazil. This invaluable document suggests what preventive measures sailors can take and advises how they should deal with stress, aggression, and fear when faced with a confrontation.

Rowman & Littlefield Slow Boat from China: A Man, a Woman, and a Dog Cruising from Hong Kong to Vancouver
"Slow Boat from China" is everything one could want out of a sailing narrative. A couple decides to escape from the rat race to the freedom and adventure of a life aboard. Sailing from Hong Kong to Vancouver, B.C. on Moonshiner, a 37' steel ketch, they encounter colorful natives and awesome landscapes, describing them in great detail. They are delayed by mechanical problems, powerful storms, and corrupt customs officials. The crew - their dog, Fluke - adds charm and humor as they stop in exotic ports in Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe. After a 3-year stopover in Holland to replenish the cruising kitty, they leave for Canada and home. "There are two dimensions to bluewater sailing - two journeys. One has a clear destination and its achievement is celebrated with flags and champagne. The other is an inner journey, where we learn about our personal strengths and limitations, and struggle to figure out what we'll do with the rest of our lives when our temporary escape is over. Cruising changes us. And there's no guarantee that the transition back into normal life will be easy. It wasn't for me - freedom can be addictive."
