This authoritative book is the most detailed account to date of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland. Arts and Crafts ideas appeared there from the 1860s, but not until after 1890 did they emerge from artistic circles and rise to popularity among the wider public. The heyday of the movement occurred between 1890 and 1914, a time when Scotland’s art schools energetically promoted new design and the Scottish Home Industries Association campaigned to revive rural crafts. Across the country the movement influenced the look of domestic and church buildings, as well as the stained glass, metalwork, textiles, and other furnishings that adorned them. Art schools, workshops, and associations helped shape the Arts and Crafts style, as did individuals such as Ann Macbeth, W. R. Lethaby, Robert Lorimer, M. H. George Campbell Hay (Deorsa Mac Iain Dheorsa) has been hailed as an important voice in Scottish literature and as a crucial figure in the renaissance of Gaelic poetry in the twentieth century. Yet with his collections long out of print, only a small proportion of his work has been available to the public. This book gathers together for the first time George Campbell Hay's complete original poems, in Gaelic, Scots, English, French, Italian and Norwegian. Volume I presents all of the poems chronologically, with accompanying English translations. Volume II provides annotations to each poem, including a full list of sources; a detailed biography, heavily reliant on Hay's own correspondence, which sheds new light on the social, political and literary context of his work; an outline of Hay's main poetic concerns, in theme and in form; and some of Hay's own musical settings. The publication of this long-awaited scholarly edition is a landmark in Scottish and Gaelic publishing. The volumes represent a notable addition to the canon of twentieth-century Scottish literature and should permit a full evaluation of Hay's significance. In the popular imagination, it is best remembered for Norman Rockwell’s covers, which nostalgically depicted a wholesome and idyllic American way of life. But beneath those covers lurked a more troubling reality. Under the direction of its longtime editor, George Horace Lorimer, the magazine helped justify racism and white supremacy. It published works by white authors that made heavy use of paternalistic tropes and demeaning humor, portraying Jim Crow segregation and violence as simple common sense.Circulating Jim Crow demonstrates how the Post used stereotypical dialect fiction to promulgate white supremacist ideology and dismiss Black achievements, citizenship, and humanity. Adam McKible tells the story of Lorimer’s rise to prominence and examines the white authors who provided the editor and his readers with the caricatures they craved. He also explores how Black writers of the Harlem Renaissance pushed back against the Post and its commodified racism. McKible places the erstwhile household names who wrote for the magazine in conversation with figures such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ann Petry, W. E. B. Leeds United's biggest crowd of the 2004-05 season was for a testimonial match. But this was no ordinary testimonial.
