Robert L. Thompson and TVA Architects have been honored with scores of local, national, and international awards for excellence in design. His projects have ranged from major corporate campuses, high-rise office towers and condominium towers, sports and recreational facilities, retail and cultural projects as well as multi- and single-family residences. Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd David Hovey
This beautifully illustrated monograph chronicles the architecture of David C. Hovey, FAIA, and his influence on the discipline, as well as the story of his life and career. David Hovey founded Optima in 1978, with the goal of reinventing multifamily housing by combining development and design in a single company. Over the forty-plus years the company has existed, Hovey has built nearly 6,000 residential units. In the process, he has elevated the design of a building type that has, with a few exceptions, been left to developers to produce indifferent work. He challenges the market with something better, something worthy of enfolding families and individuals. Hovey is a modernist, steadfast in his belief in the future, in technology, in material honesty, in structural expression, and in architecture’s ability to improve the lives of people. His work has captured attention, winning critical acclaim as well as many national and regional awards for architecture. The dozen representative projects in this book range from single-family homes to towers and from the company’s early years to the present. Also showcased is Hovey’s work as an abstract sculptor, whose monumental work is installed at some of the multifamily projects examined here. A serious art collector of mostly twentieth-century art, Hovey’s acquisitions are detailed in an illustrated catalogue at the end of the book.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Odile Decq: The Wunderkammer of Odile Decq
Odile Decq: The Wunderkammer of Odile Decq invites you to take a voyage and explore Odile Decq's unique and complete universe of architecture, urban planning, design and art, which celebrates the freedom of imagination and shines a light on her distinctive approach to what is conventionally defined as architecture. Perhaps nothing could set the tone for this book better than Odile Decq's own poetic words, a credo that has become evident after 40 years of architectural and design practice: "The horizon line is a constant temptation, and gives the desire of beyond, the absence of limits blurs the perception, creates ambiguity, fusion, and illusion. The consciousness of elsewhere, the perception of the space beyond." With intricate sketches and concept models, rich photography and an intimate and unique commentary, this concept monograph (aptly described as a cabinet of curiosities) showcases quintessential frameworks of Odile Decq's multidisciplinary design approach; it illuminates her inspirational sources; and most importantly, demonstrates the coherence that is legible on every scale of her work. From her signature concept of dynamic space, setting body into tension and movement, to lifelong ideals of organic transformation of object, perception, and fluidity of things, there are within these pages as many realised and imaginary obsessions as there are aesthetic fascinations.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Brick Stone Metal Wood: Building on Tradition
The buildings of the past were constructed with readily available and local materials, such as stone, wood, or handmade bricks. Architects in the modern era, however, can choose from an ever increasing number of new materials, each one allowing for different advances in design. And yet the traditional materials have never been entirely supplanted; they still form an important part of the architectural range and are still used by architects the world over. The humble brick, for example, has remained a constant throughout the history of architecture, as has timber with its flexibility and warm tones. But today such elements can be used in conjunction with newer materials to highlight their natural beauty in many different ways: creating a stunning metal facade, wrapping a building with a cool, sleek stone finish, designing a wall with an eye-catching interesting texture, or adding depth or warmth to an internal design. Traditional metals are also finding new use, being employed to coat a structure in a light metal skin that reflects the sunlight, or embedded onto a building to add interest and texture. This book journeys through a curated selection of stunning examples from across the world, showcasing how each material is creatively used over a diverse range of building types and styles, and illustrating the myriad possibilities and forms available to the modern architect who chooses to rework these age-old materials into a brand-new decorative yet functional form.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Flexible Visual Identity
In the internet age, the means of communication keep changing along with the increasing formation. It becomes more difficult to catch the public's attention and the monotonous and invariable logos can't meet the needs of current and future commercial society any more. Designers need to seek new design language to express a brand. Flexible logos are a kind of design form with more variability, stronger adaptability, wider coverage, and fresh visual effect. This new form perfectly follows the development trend of globalised, diversified, and internet integration of online and offline operations in the new commercial society. However, the birth of flexible logos is not only to adapt to new media - and new means of communication - but also a breakthrough of logo design itself that creates new possibilities for the innovation of logo form and breaks the fixed, monotonous, and invariable characteristics of the traditional static logos. This book explores the creation and methods of the flexible logo design process, and analyses its application across dozens of international projects. Each project explores the notion of broader brand extension stability, as well as the stability of consumers' psychological recognition.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Hanoi Streets 1985-2015: In the Years of Forgetting
Documentary photographer William E. Crawford spent three decades documenting Vietnam, and in particular Hanoi, its people and the surrounding countryside. As one of the very first Western photographers to work in post-war North Vietnam, Crawford was drawn back to the country numerous times at regular intervals between 1985 and 2015 to record this fascinating country's culture, people, and society with beautiful, compelling and intimate photographs, concentrating on colonial and indigenous architecture, urban details, portraits, and landscapes. In 1986, the Vietnam's Communist leadership began to shift from a Soviet-style central planning model toward free-market economic reforms. As a result, Hanoi has been transformed over the last three decades, becoming an example of how traditional Asian and developing cities have often been torn down or allowed to crumble - only to re-emerge in a 'modernised' form. Unlike photo-journalism, which is interested in the theatre of the moment, Crawford's evocative and powerful photography chronicles life throughout Hanoi and its surrounds over the course of the last three decades. Filled with full-colour photographs and informative essays on his experiences and the people he encountered, Crawford's work - showcased in this beautifully presented volume - provides a unique visual catalogue of the evolution of a city and its inhabitants, and in particular the complex historical area known as The 36 Streets.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Valode & Pistre: Complete Works: 1980 to Present
Valode & Pistre seem atypical in the world of contemporary architecture. Their bright, cheerful offices on the Rue du Bac in the heart of Paris reflect this nature. It seems quite natural that artists who work with light such as Yann Kersalé and the late François Morellet have been pleased to create installations specifically for these offices because, from their first iconic completed work, the renovation of the CAPC Bordeaux Contemporary Art Museum, the pair have been actively interested in the connections between art and architecture. Denis Valode says, “We are convinced that the role of the architect is to do more with less and not the contrary. The economy of means—the correct choice of means—is essential. Our goal is to create the best possible result with a certain frugality of means.” Once again, this interest in obtaining the maximum result with a minimum of means leads the architects to note that their approach is particularly well suited to current ecological concerns. Denis Valode and Jean Pistre’s sense of efficiency has proven to be far more durable and better adapted to the demands of contemporary architecture than the many flamboyant styles that have come and gone since they started working together. Their words are in perfect harmony with their ideas—they avoid excessive rhetoric but when they talk about buildings they do so with passion and with clear ideas and methods, often involving their aesthetic sense developed through the world of art. Denis Valode and Jean Pistre oversee one of the most successful architectural offices in France, working on prestigious towers, hospitals, and research facilities, but also on shopping centers and sports venues. Nor are their projects limited to France—they have worked in China, Russia, and numerous other countries. The pair first worked together in 1978 and created Valode & Pistre in 1980. Today the office employs 200 people and provides interior, architectural, and urban design as well as engineering services. These projects highlight the success of the office in breaking through the barriers that usually separate architects who work on privately funded projects and public ones in France.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd The Wooden Bicycle: Around the World
Up until about a century ago, wood had always been the only available material for the construction of the first bicycles, and it was as recently as the 1950s that wood was the only material used for bike wheels in all competitive cycling realms. These days, in opposition to the great industrialisation of steel manufacturing, wood and bamboo are increasingly being used to create a niche space in design within the industries of transportation, sport, art, culture and indeed modern lives in general. With the significant advances in technological research and application, wood and bamboo are increasingly being promoted as materials suitable for the construction of bicycle frames and individual bicycle components. Showcasing more than 250 designers from around the world, including craftspeople (many of them renowned bicycle makers), manufacturers and associated organisations, this book dedicates hundreds of pages to beautiful bike designs, illuminating the latest modern trends in specialist bicycle craftmanship. Set out with detailed, distinctive design dialogues from each craftsperson or manufacturer, we learn how wood and bamboo are being enhanced and developed as extremely durable, aesthetically appealing materials, and which are considered sustainable, ecologically viable, user friendly and dynamic across each application. Beautifully illustrated, with historical references and texts by experts in the trade, and backed up with technical engineering knowledge,

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Pocket Park Design
Urban planners have paid more attention to the concept of the pocket park as modern cities become denser and buildings taller. As the pace of urbanisation accelerates and populations increase, particularly in larger cities, there becomes much less park space available for people to enjoy. With less investment and area required, 'Pocket Parks' could provide a solution. They fulfil the need for highly sought-after leisure spaces, which can operate in high-density city environments, bypassing the hurdle of space. These beautiful green areas increase the ecological benefits of the urban environment, helping to enrich and satisfy the local residents' lives. Pocket Park Design introduces the outstanding landscape architects and designers who create pocket parks. Pocket parks should be located where they are safe and convenient to access, as well as providing open spaces that are comfortable, functional, and pleasant for park visitors. While the areas of a pocket park will generally cater to a variety of demographics, specific spaces or activity areas may be provided for dominant user groups, such as children, workers, or the elderly. This book studies the pocket park's characteristics, as well as the relationship between humanity and the surrounding landscape. It will be a great source of inspiration to landscape designers.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Homage to the Bird
"With 240 pages filled with incredible art, the bird lover will enjoy flipping through and taking in the vast distinctions between species in the bird kingdom." — Prevention Australian artist Greg Oakley has had a lifelong fascination with birds and bird art, and began photographing birds 20 years ago, progressing from traditional film to digital in the early 2000s. In the past six years, he has worked on perfecting the difficult and exacting area of bird photography known as “setup”, where perches and backgrounds are meticulously crafted and designed, and lighting strictly controlled. There are sometimes hundreds of individual photographs taken and then digitally combined to create a single work. With a combination of photographic skill, field craft, meticulousness and incredible patience, he removes the subject from its natural environment and context, re-imagining it in a field-guide style reminiscent of the historic bird artists. Oakley's photographs represent a reconstructed contemporary vision of important historic artists such as Gould and Audubon. This collection of stunning artwork is a testament to the natural beauty of birds, highlighting the precarious existence of many endangered species and a reminder of the beauty we could lose. By isolating the subject into an unblemished reality, each species’ character and beauty is celebrated with empathy and understanding. The resulting images provide both a rare glimpse in stunning detail of these delicate creatures, and a poignant reminder of the tragic, impending loss of many of them due to habitat loss and climate change.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Mario Botta Architetti: Leading Architects
We recognise Mario Botta's buildings for their strong presence. His architecture is not ephemeral. It shapes the mass firmly and precisely. It touches the ground with self-reliance. A building by Mario Botta is an autonomous object. It comprises an ordered world of its own make. It is standing in dialogue with the urban tissue, but it establishes its own order as if it aims at differentiation instead of integration. Architectural order represents the core of his personal idiom. It is a well structured, compositional order which organises everything into a whole, as an underlying thread that connects and brings together houses on the mountains to museums and churches, banks and commercial buildings to buildings on the ground and buildings underground, different buildings at different places in time. The themes that underlie Mario Botta's architecture are ties that connect and spines that support, common threads that bind one building to the next. His architecture is one of mass. It is then of no surprise that mass is the first thing to be defined and ordered, in his creative process. The volume of his buildings is mostly composed by one or more primary solids. Volume is thus an a-priori for Botta. It is conceived beforehand, the starting point to the adventure of architectural design. From the Introduction, Thoughts on architectural creativity By Dr. Irena Sakellaridou

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Hariri & Hariri Architecture: Leading Architects
Regarded by critics to be one of the most progressive American firms to be seen in the last 30 years, Hariri & Hariri Architecture was established in 1986 by Iranian-born Cornell-educated sisters, Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri. Their work imbues their own unique brand of modernism across conceptual, residential, commercial and institutional works. The practice has a voice that is distinctly its own. The firm's work has often been described in the language of poetry or art. What differentiates its work is the firm's insistence that it approaches all projects, small or large, in a 'holistic' manner. While this approach integrates multiple dimensions and considerations, there are two overriding imperatives that transcend others to define its design narrative: 'nature and identity.' These key principles are celebrated in this visually stunning book. A significant addition to IMAGES' growing list of titles in its global-reaching Leading Architects series, this beautifully photographed book showcases an enormous body of work by a firm led by two multi-disciplinary practitioners.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd High Desert Retreat: Aidlin Darling Design
Starting with the question “How to create a residence within this beautiful desolate site while also creating a respectful compliment to the existing ecology”, Aidlin Darling Design created a soulful environment on a bluff in the high desert. Overlooking the Coachella Valley, the resulting structure nestles tightly into a constellation of existing boulders. The residence is a composition of three fundamental elements: a floating roof plane, a collection of wooden volumes, and a pair of concrete anchor walls. The stunning result is testament to the ethos of the firm to design for all the senses. The home became a framing device in which the sensuality of the surrounds is highlighted, and the boulders, Pinyon Trees and the distant mountain ranges became sculptures and paintings to be appreciated from within. The design is exceedingly crisp in its geometry, providing an intentional contrast to the organic forms of the desert. This book takes the reader through the journey from design conception to the realisation.

Images Publishing Group Pty Ltd Among the Living: Where You Belong
"...her photographs serve as an initiative to raise awareness on the threats facing wildlife, and the environment which sustains it." — Arabian Business Traveller A truly beautiful collection of luxurious images, Among the Living, Where You Belong showcases the magnificent wildlife photography taken by photographer and explorer Guadalupe Laiz. For this book, Guadalupe travelled across the African continent for six years, forgoing comfort for months at a time—returning with intimate portraits of charismatic and fierce, yet often vulnerable and endangered animals. It is impossible to look at one of her photographs—really see it—and not feel her subject’s innate individuality. She spends time with these creatures up close in their natural habitats, gets to know them personally over time, and builds on trust and respect in encounters with such creatures as Big Craig, the biggest elephant tusker in Kenya, the famous Susa gorilla family in Rwanda, or Bob Jr., the majestic lion dubbed the King of the Serengeti in Tanzania—among many others, including rhinos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, and more. Her work reveals something anyone who has been around such animals at close range knows: these beasts are intelligent and self-interested. They love. They fear. They have needs and desires, and they deserve to be themselves and be seen for what and who they are. Guadalupe’s work is vital. Ultimately, Guadalupe’s efforts are to communicate through art the importance of animal abuse awareness, environmental issues, and the relevance of educating all generations to make conscious lifestyle decisions to protect our planet. Beautiful and transporting, Guadalupe’s work is also a call to action. She inspires us to become wildlife advocates, and to join conservation efforts whichever way we can. Guadalupe has partnered with nonprofits involved with environmental issues, animal abuse, and human-animal conflicts in Africa, such as the Dian Fossey Foundation, Big Life Foundation, Save Giraffes Now, and Lewa Conservancy for Rhinos, as well as engaged in humanitarian work with 4africa in South Sudan and north Uganda. Guadalupe offers this collection, a labour of love, of her encounters with this wildlife, chronicling the many linked moments she witnessed in the intimacy of their everyday journeys.
