I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies Of the few surviving Nizari Ismaili texts from the Alamut period, the Haft bab (Seven Chapters), which outlines the basic tenets of Ismaili philosophical theology, has proved to be the most popular. One of its many attractive features is its simple recounting of the most complicated Ismaili theological narratives, including the doctrine of the Resurrection (qiyamat). Produced around the year 1203, this small treatise was probably intended as an introduction to the Diwan-i Qa'imiyyat compiled by Hasan-i Mahmud-i Katib (d. after 1242). For many years, the Haft bab was misattributed to Baba Sayyidna (Hasan-i Sabbah), but the true author has finally been identified as Hasan-i Mahmud-i Katib, whose works continue to shape our understanding of this important period.The current text of the Haft bab, edited and translated into English by S. J. Badakhchani, is based on Badakhchani's analysis of a great number of manuscripts available, including a complete and unaltered version. The concepts found in the text derive largely from the intellectual heritage of the Fatimids.These include the idea of tanzih (the absolute transcendence of God beyond human understanding and knowledge); a cyclical conception of prophetic history, consisting of seven eras (dawr); the Ismaili Imamate as the most important pillar of Ismaili Islam; and the Qiyamat as the completion and perfection of the religious law (shari'at). The Ismaili interpretation of the Qiyamat is radically different from Qur'anic eschatology in its esoteric formation, spiritual aspiration and imaginative scope. The Haft bab explains this key doctrine of Nizari Ismailism, shedding light on a fundamental period in the history of Shi'i Islam.

Marcel Le Blanc was one of fourteen Jesuits who arrived in Siam at the request of King Narai to promote the study of mathematics and astrology, but he became inextricably involved in events surrounding Phetracha's coup d'etat. He was in Bangkok during the siege and the arrival of the King's favorite, Madame Phalkon, who was subsequently arrested and killed. He describes his departure from the country with the French troops, his capture by the Dutch at the Cape, and his imprisonment in Middleburg. McNamee's detailed and well illustrated new study is about eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. It focuses on the pervading presence of the vested angel in this school of painting and its eucharistic significance. These angels, dressed in every possible variation of the vestments of the subministers of the traditional Solemn High Mass, are represented as serving the Christ in each episode of His life. As celebrant of the Eternal Liturgy, Christ is shown wearing "the chasuble of his flesh". The author traces the source of the symbol of the vested angel to the motif of the Eternal Liturgy (or Mass) in the Byzantine tradition. Here Christ is represented at an altar wearing the phelonion or eastern equivalent of a chasuble, and being assisted by angels dressed in orarions, the eastern equivalent of the dalmatic, the vestment of deacons and subdeacons at the traditional Solemn High Mass in the West. Another more immediate source is the long tradition of the Latin liturgical dramas, in which the directives frequently prescribe that the angels in the plays be dressed in some variation of vestments of the traditional Solemn High Mass in the West. The history of the vested angel is traced through numerous paintings representing scenes from the life of Christ: from the Annunciation through the Last Judgement. The theological basis of this study is offered in a discussion of Maurice de la Taille's Mysterium Fidei, a theory of Mass that best parallels the concept of Eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. The author provides clarifying new insights into the paintings he analyses, such as The Adoration of the Lamb, by Jan van Eyck and the Beaune Last Judgement by Rogier van der Weyden. Colour illustrations and over a hundred photographs of the original paintings help the reader to follow this fascinating analysis.
