Experiencing the Frontier and the Frontier of Experience deals with the Roman Empire’s responses to the threats which were caused by the new geostrategic situation brought on by the crisis of the 3rd century AD, induced by the ‘barbarians’ who – often already part of Roman military structures as mercenaries and auxiliaries – became a veritable menace for the Empire. Rome adopted different strategies: they oscillated between inclusion, warfare and other means of exerting influence. The contributions to this volume explore the archaeological evidence for Roman practice and especially the varying strategies of power and influence in the central regions on the one hand, and the south-eastern parts of the European ‘Barbaricum’ on the other. They show how ‘Divide et impera’ functioned as practical policy based on alliances, as well as consequent warfare, and diplomatic initiatives, which are traceable by prestige-goods and subsidia treasures found in the Barbaricum. The comparison of Roman imports in different parts of Iron-Age Europe can help understand better a complex process of shifting power and influence in an emerging new Europe, which transformed the Empire towards medieval ‘Herrschaft’ and social structure.

Memory as a dynamic process has been the underlying theme of Sabine Moritz s drawings and paintings since the early 1990s. In her work the Cologne-based artist has captured remembered images from her childhood in the GDR; drawn flower compositions; and in recent years has engaged with the motif of war. This publication presents Moritz s latest work: a collection of drawings and paintings of helicopters created between 2002 and 2013. The Helicopter series has arisen from Moritz s interest in the shift in their symbolic meaning. They are based on images of helicopters from newspapers and television that the artist transferred into her own language.The outcome is a series of beautiful drawings and paintings that range from objective depictions of helicopters to more poetic compositions. At the 2014 International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator of the Swiss pavilion, realised a display and a series of events referring to Lucius Burckhardt (1925-2003), an eminent Swiss sociologist and urbanist. In the 1980s, Burckhardt had proposed the concept of a science of Strollology, based on his view that only by strolling we truly perceive our environment. Burckhardt, a pioneer of modern urbanism, also re-defined architecture as "orbiting around man, space, and achievement". Twelve Swiss artists were commissioned to explore the exhibit in Venice and to develop the art project Invent the Future with Elements of the Past in Zurich, for which Burckhardt once again proved inspirational. They strolled searching for the narrative of urban design, thus offering an artistic interpretation of Burckhardt's ideas and theories. This new book documents the project, featuring original contributions, inserts, texts, images, and interviews by the participating artists.

On September 29, 2018, before a live audience at Navy Pier in Chicago, international curator Hans Ulrich Obrist conducted his first US Marathon interview session as part of Art Design Chicago, a yearlong celebration of Chicago's art and design legacy initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art. The Oldest Living Things in the World is an epic journey through time and space. Over the past decade, artist Rachel Sussman has researched, worked with biologists, and traveled the world from Antarctica to the Mojave Desert in order to photograph continuously living organisms that are at least 2,000 years old. The result is a stunning and unique visual collection of species unlike anything that has been created in the arts or sciences before. She begins at "year zero," and looks back from there, photographing the past in the present. The ancient subjects live on every continent and range from Greenlandic lichens that grow only one centimeter per century, to unique desert shrubs in Africa and South America, predatory fungus in Oregon, Caribbean brain coral, and an 80,000-year-old colony of aspen in Utah. She journeyed to Antarctica to photograph 5,500-year-old moss; Australia for stromatolites, which are organisms tied to the oxygenation of the planet and the beginnings of life on Earth; and Tasmania to capture a 43,600-year-old self-propagating shrub that's the last of its kind. These portraits reveal the living history of our planet-and what we stand to lose in the future. The latest in Karma's acclaimed series of overviews, this 424-page clothbound volume is the first comprehensive survey of New York–based minimalist painter Paul Mogensen (born 1941). Born in Los Angeles, Mogensen arrived in New York in 1966 already associated with such peers as David Novros and (through Novros) Brice Marden. His first solo exhibition at the Bykert Gallery came the following year. Since that time, Mogensen has created often colorful works that follow rule-based progressions (such as the “n + 1” method) to generate sharply executed geometric abstractions. In a text for this volume, the artist Lynda Benglis usefully summarizes the special character of Mogensen’s art: “Paul is a colorist who is measured in his method. It may be said that he is a decorative painter as well a painter of a philosophical disposition. He is stringent in his approach, as stringent as a mechanic might be with a Ferrari. The Visual Candy paintings were made between 1992 and 1994.The works showcase the ways in which Damien Hirst used the signifier of candy during the early 1990's, exploring questions of pure aesthetics. Hirst says they were created as a direct riposte to an art critic who had dismissed Hirst's Spot Paintings as "just visual candy.' Iconic nail paintings and watercolors from Günther Uecker, famed for his participation in Group ZERO Featuring both the nail paintings for which Günther Uecker (born 1930) is best known, plus watercolors made during his many travels, Notations provides an unusual dual-take on the German sculptor, op artist and installation artist. What are the various atmospheres or moods that the reading of literary works can trigger? Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht has long argued that the function of literature is not so much to describe, or to re-present, as to make present. Here, he goes one step further, exploring the substance and reality of language as a material component of the world—impalpable hints, tones, and airs that, as much as they may be elusive, are no less matters of actual fact.
