De Gruyter Raw Flows. Fluid Mattering in Arts and Research
The word ‘fluid’ describes a phenomenon as well as a material property. Of special interest is how aspects of fluidity influence the active and direct handling of materials and how its special characteristics are expressed in experimental practices and thinking patterns. The motivation for focusing on fluidity as a prerequisite for ‘becoming’ and the nature of processes originated from the art-based ‘Liquid Things’ research project. As this subject covers a very wide spectrum, the approach was modified to allow the participation of several disciplines; the book draws on the philosophy of science, hydrodynamics, and the cultural sciences, and focuses on the role of fluidity in cognitive and experience processes with the aim of establishing a grammar of ‘movable’ materials.

Peter Lang AG Concepts as Correlates of Lexical Labels: A Cognitivist Perspective
The study of language becomes particularly attractive when it is not practised as an isolated descriptive enterprise, but when it has wide-ranging implications for the study of the human mind. Such is the spirit of this book. While categorisation may be the single most basic cognitive process in organisms, and as an area of inquiry, it is fundamental to Cognitive Science as a whole, at the other end of the spectrum, high-level cognition is organised and permeated by language, giving rise to categories that count and function as concepts. Working from considering the philosophical assumptions of the cognitivist perspective, this study offers an argument for a very productive understanding of the relation between concepts, categories, and their theoretical models.

Cambridge University Press Rome An Empire of Many Nations
The center of gravity in Roman studies has shifted far from the upper echelons of government and administration in Rome or the Emperor's court to the provinces and the individual. The multi-disciplinary studies presented in this volume reflect the turn in Roman history to the identities of ethnic groups and even single individuals who lived in Rome's vast multinational empire. The purpose is less to discover another element in the Roman Empire's âœsuccessâ in governance than to illuminate the variety of individual experience in its own terms. The chapters here, reflecting a wide spectrum of professional expertise, range across the many cultures, languages, religions and literatures of the Roman Empire, with a special focus on the Jews as a test-case for the larger issues.

Less serious (but perhaps of greater interest to lawyers) are misdescriptions of cargo in, or backdating of, bills of lading, and other deceptions, usually practised on purchasers and banks.

Birkhauser Verlag AG Spectral properties of Schroedinger operators and scattering theory
These are the written notes of Fermi's Lectures supported by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and given at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa during March-April 1973. We propose to discuss here certain spectral properties of Schrödinger operators H=-D+V(x) (D the Laplacian and V a potential) which have application to scattering theory. We consider an operator H with potential V of class SR. We show that the positive point spectrum of H is a discrete set in R+. Eigenfunctions which correspond to positive eigenvalues are shown to decay rapidly. This property is shown to hold also for generalized eigenfunctions. We then establish the limiting absorbing principle, which is a basic tool in our study.

Hatje Cantz Nicholas Nixon: Closing the Distance
American photographer Nicholas Nixon is known for his large-format black-and-white photographs, in which he creates a special connection with the viewers by sharing intimate moments in life. For his most iconic series, The Brown Sisters, he followed four sisters over 46 years. His practice, however, encompasses a much broader spectrum, such as the simple life in the southern states of the US or landscape portraits of the rough industrial areas around Detroit. Beginning with the aspect of intimacy, this monograph provides the first overview of Nixon’s oeuvre. It is a journey through the artist’s life and work – at once distant and at times intimate and close – and also features new photographs.
