Lidija Novakovic offers an explanation of the remarkable link found in the Gospel of Matthew between the royal messianic title "Son of David" attributed to Jesus and his miracles of healing. There is no doubt that this represents a Christian development, because there is no extant early Jewish text that portrays the Davidic Messiah as a miracle worker. Yet, given the predominantly Jewish character of Matthew's Gospel, the origin of the concept of the healing Messiah should still be sought in the traditions of the Second Temple Judaism. The underlying principle of Matthew's portrayal of Jesus, however, cannot be found in the traditions about Solomon as an exorcist or healer, or about the eschatological prophet like Moses. Rather, the intelligibility of the healing Messiah is secured through Matthew's own skillful interpretation of selected biblical passages, especially from the Book of Isaiah.

The Chronicle of King Gälawdewos (r. 1540–1559), reporting the nineteen years of the king’s reign, is one of the most useful and significant historical sources for the history of Christian-Muslim relation in the sixteenth century of Ethiopia and the Horn. It represents a peculiar text in Gǝʿǝz historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chronicler. Numerous Arabisms appear in the text, which eventually suggest that the Chronicle was written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic, in 1561. The book presents a new critical edition based on all available manuscripts and provides some detailed introductory notes and an English translation. The new edition yields philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos in particular and new inputs that call for re-editing the Ethiopian royal chronicles in general. It also adds valuable by now not recorded items for Gǝʿǝz lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the work provides a text-critically established edition of the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos accompanied by an up-to-date concisely annotated translation, which offer new insights into the late medieval history and historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

This book presents a detailed overview of the firearms used in Oman over the last four centuries. Portable firearms were brought into the Arabian Gulf by the Portuguese, but there is no trace of these early weapons the region. In Oman, the typical matchlock guns with decorated Indian barrels were highly esteemed and they were passed from generation to generation as a family heritage. Matchlock guns were replaced only by breech-loading Martini Henry rifles at the end of the 19th century, when Muscat became the major firearms’ entrepot in the Arabian Gulf with hundreds of thousands of breech loading rifles re-exported throughout the whole region up to Afghanistan and Persia. The Martini Henry rifle and its variants were by far the most common weapon and Belgian made Martini Henry were specifically engraved for the Muscat market. Cannon entered the country in great number mostly as ordnances on Royal Navy ships and they are now kept in forts, towers and fortified buildings across the entire Oman. The weapons described in this book are mostly from the National Museum and Bait al Zubair Museum in Muscat.

Thus Erskine Beveridge opens his classic account of the archaeology and topography of North Uist, the island where he spent much of his life. The range and quality of Beveridge’s work was not surpassed until the most recent series of Royal Commission inventories of the 1970s and 1980s and it is all the more extraordinary that this level of expertise and range of knowledge should be combined in one individual. Adding to the fascination of the book are more than 150 plates showing the island and its sites in a condition from which many have greatly changed. Saudi Arabia is not normally associated with the political instability and social turmoil for which many states of the Middle East are known, but this is changing. Politically astute opposition movements that emerged after the 1991 Gulf War have challenged the House of Saud in a way that the royal family has not previously encountered, and some of these have become radicalized and emboldened. This volume dissects the legitimacy structure constructed by the Saudi dynasty and the challenges posed by the reform movements after 1991. Daryl Champion argues that pre-existing indigenous Islamist groupings have been reconstructed since then, becoming better organized and more effective in their political campaign against the regime, a process undoubtedly aided by the Internet. The regime's responses to these challenges, including the traditional methods of repression and censorship in an era of global information flows, are examined. Champion's principal aim is to illuminate domestic Saudi society and politics but, in assessing the stability of the regime, the relationship with the United States is also scrutinized, especially with regard to bomb attacks perpetrated against American military personnel by Islamist factions, including those associated with Osama bin Laden.

In December 1936, a villager was led by a dream to the ruins of the West Mebon shrine in Angkor where he uncovered remains of a bronze sculpture.
