Bloomsbury Publishing Plc It Came from Outer Space: Everyday Products and Ideas from the Space Program
What do anthrax protection, golf clubs, and cordless power tools have in common? Each was invented or improved with technology first developed for the space program. Since NASA's inception 45 years ago, hundreds of everyday devices and products have emerged from the research and development required to put rockets into space and humans on the moon. To expand our knowledge of the universe, scientists and engineers with the space program constantly confront new challenges in vehicle design, life support, communications, and astronaut health and well-being. The solutions to these challenges have often benefited those of us who remain on Earth. This book tells the story of 67 of the most consumer-friendly products born of space-related research. Discover the fascinating histories of commonplace items that we now take for granted. One model of ergonomic chairs was based on the position of astronauts at rest in Skylab. Improvements in health-rate monitors resulted from the need to track changes in an astronaut's heart rate. Even swimsuits and ballpoints pens have been improved by space technology. This book also includes extensive information on the history of NASA, and on the technology-transfer centers that help make such product improvements happen. Lesson plans and resources offer additional sources of information on this remarkable subject.

Oxford University Press Inc Biogeography
Published by Sinauer Associates, an imprint of Oxford University Press. Biogeography, first published in 1983, is one of the most comprehensive text and general reference books in the natural sciences. The fifth edition builds on the strengths of previous editions to provide an insightful and integrative explanation of how geographic variation across terrestrial and marine environments has influenced the fundamental processes of immigration, extinction, and evolution to shape species distributions and nearly all patterns of biological diversity. It is an empirically and conceptually rich text that illustrates general patterns and processes using examples from a broad diversity of life forms, time periods and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Biogeography, Fifth Edition, is written as a primary text for undergraduate and graduate courses, and is also an invaluable reference for biogeographers, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and conservation biologists. Its fundamental assertion is that patterns in biological diversity make little sense unless viewed within an explicit geographic context. Starting from principal patterns and fundamental principles, and assuming only a rudimentary knowledge of biology, geography, and Earth history, the text explains the relationships between geographic variation in biological diversity and the geological, ecological, and evolutionary processes that have produced them. The use of color illustrations, evaluated and optimized for colorblind readers, has transformed our abilities to illustrate key concepts and empirical patterns in the geography of nature. By providing a description of the historical development of biogeography, evolution and ecology, along with a comprehensive account of the principal patterns, fundamental principles and recent advances in each of these fields of science, our ultimate vision is for Biogeography to serve as the centerpiece of a one- or two-semester core course in biological diversity.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Design and Analysis of Experiments for Statistical Selection, Screening, and Multiple Comparisons
A practical guide to selection, screening, and multiplecomparisons This book addresses experimenters who have knowledge of classicalexperimental design methodology and expands their repertoire beyondhypothesis testing by providing statistical methods appropriate forselection, screening, and multiple comparisons. It concentrates onthree types of procedures: selection procedures that use the"indifference-zone" approach, screening procedures using the"subset" approach, and multiple comparison procedures involvingnormal means. This is the first book, specifically designed forpractitioners, to bring into focus many developments in the fieldpreviously covered only in university courses. It also presents newresults on the comparison of procedures that have been obtainedspecifically for this volume. This self-contained volume describes methods for designingexperiments when the scientific objective is selection of besttreatments, screening a set of treatments, and multiple comparisonsamong treatment means. The book emphasizes procedures appropriatein a variety of practical settings including those that requireblocking and randomization restriction. It compares the relativemerits of procedures when several different methods can be used inthe same circumstances. Providing practical guidance for experimenters in agriculture, engineering, medicine, and other empirical sciences, this book mayalso be used for a one-semester graduate course in selectionmethodology or to augment traditional courses in experimentaldesign. Design and Analysis of Experiments for Statistical Selection,Screening, and Multiple Comparisons: * Shows how selection and screening can be applied to data thatfollow one of three important probability models--normaldistribution, binomial distribution, and the multinomialdistribution models * Provides an extensive comparison of procedures, allowingexperimenters to choose among competitors when several differentprocedures are feasible for a given application * Gives an extensive set of tables of constants necessary toimplement the procedures * Supplements the tables of constants with listings of FORTRANprograms so that experimenters are not limited to those valuescovered by the tables * Focuses on frequent formulations, while also providing referencesto Bayesian and other alternative developments in the Chapter Notes

Cornell University Press Order and Exclusion: Cluny and Christendom Face Heresy, Judaism, and Islam (1000–1150)
Order and Exclusion is a rare and magnificent book of medieval history with clear relevance to today's headlines. Through the lens of the polemics of Peter the Venerable, abbot of Cluny, Dominique Iogna-Prat examines the process by which christianity transformed itself into Christendom, a powerful spiritual, social, and political system with pretensions to universality. Iogna-Prat's close examination of a set of writings central to the history of Catholicism resolves into a deeply troubling study of the origins of attitudes that continue to shape world events. Iogna-Prat writes that "versions of fundamentalism nourished by the soil of an often terrible common history" show that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have all been capable of intolerance.Peter the Venerable's writings had a far-reaching impact: the powerful network of Clunaic houses expanded from the founding of the original monastery of Cluny to dominate Christendom by the twelfth century. This Christendom, Iogna-Prat demonstrates, defined itself in part through its increasingly bitter struggles against its perceived enemies both within and without. Peter the Venerable's all-pervasive logic pitted the "order" of the monastery and its hierarchical society against all those—heretics, Jews, Muslims, lepers—outside its bounds. In his proclamations against Jews and Muslims, Peter devised a Christian anthropology: in his view, to be non-Christian was to be non-human. The power of the Church came at a great and lasting price.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Designing the Global City: Design Excellence, Competitions and the Remaking of Central Sydney
This text explores how architectural and urban design values have been co-opted by global cities to enhance their economic competitiveness by creating a superior built environment that is not just aesthetically memorable but more productive and sustainable. It focuses on the experience of central Sydney through its policy commitment to ‘design excellence’ and more particularly to mandatory competitive design processes for major private development. Framed within broader contexts that link it to comparable urban policy and design issues in the Asia-Pacific region and globally, it provides a scholarly but accessible volume that provides a balanced and critical overview of a policy that has changed the design culture, development expectations, public realm and skyline of central Sydney, raising issues surrounding the uneven distribution of benefits and costs, professional practice, representative democracy, and implications of globalization.

University of Toronto Press Philosophical and Theological Papers, 1965-1980: Volume 17
A companion to Philosophical and Theological Papers 1958-1964 (Volume 6 in the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan series), this anthology contains Lonergan's lectures on philosophy and theology given during the later period of his life, 1965-1980. These papers document his development in the discipline during the years leading up to the publication of Method in Theology, and beyond to 1980 when he was more engaged in his writings and seminars on macroeconomics. Philosophical and Theological Papers 1965-1980 is divided into five sections, forming units on the basis of dates. The three central sections are each a set of lectures respectively given at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gonzaga University in Spokane, and Trinity College (University of Toronto). Although there is some repetition amongst the lecture sets and in relation to other more familiar works, this repetition displays occasional new turns of phrase that the careful reader will note. In at least one instance, familiar material suddenly opens out onto expressions not to be found anywhere else in Lonergan's work. Other very interesting developments regard the movement from speaking of the immutability of dogmas to their permanence of meaning and the permutations among 'real self-transcendence,' 'performative self-transcendence,' and 'moral self-transcendence.'
