After the Great War, there was much debate in the USA whether the country should isolate itself from old world' conflicts or follow an imperialist path and become the world's only super-power. If the USA was to become a super-power, then conflict with Great Britain might result. Consequently, the US drew up War Plan Red. This was a scheme for the USA to invade Canada and the Caribbean which would draw the Royal Navy into North American waters where it would be destroyed. Without the Royal Navy, the rest of the British Empire would be vulnerable to American attacks. It became clear, however, as the decade wore on, that the Imperialists were not going to gain a clear-cut victory, so other means of achieving their aims would be needed. In 1939 the American military establishment created an intelligence-gathering machine within their Embassy in London under the Ambassadorship of Joseph Patrick Kennedy. Then in spring 1941, a small group of US Army officers travelled to Britain to plan for Anglo-American cooperation should the United States became involved in the Second World War. This was the US Army Special Observer Group, or SPOBS as it was commonly known. It is questionable whether the Military Attach s and SPOBS activities were spying', for they were operating - at least in the early days - with the full permission and knowledge of the British Government. Their intelligence-gathering activities spread out as far as the Middle East, Africa, South America, Russia and Asia - far beyond the terms of the original brief. It did not cease with the outbreak of peace - the advent of the Cold War between East and West brought forth a whole new range of subterfuge and behind-the-scenes activities by the CIA. So, were the Americans allies or spies? Certainly, the SPOBS bled Great Britain white of data and information, sending it all back to the War Department in Washington under the guise of helping. It was also a blueprint that America used in one form or another to encourage' regime change around the world through the seventy years or so after the Second World War and which continues to this day.

Jacqueline Groag was probably the most influential textile designer in Britain in the post Second World War era. Although originally Czech, she studied textile and pattern design in Austria in the 1920s. During the late twenties and early thirties she designed textiles for the Wiener Werkstatte in Vienna and subsequently designed and produced unique hand printed lengths of fabrics for many of the leading Parisian fashion houses, including Chanel, Lanvin, Worth, Schiaparelli and Paul Poiret. She was awarded a gold medal for textile design at the Milan Triennale in 1933 and another gold medal for printed textiles at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Jacqueline was not only a serious and highly respected contender in the field of textile and pattern design but, with her husband, the Modernist architect Jacques Groag, was also deeply immersed in the intellectual life of Vienna. In 1938 the sophisticated world of Jacques and Jacqueline was brutally shattered when the Anschluss, the political unification of Austria and Germany, occurred and the German army entered Vienna. Faced with the actuality of the Nazi terror the Groags, who were Jewish, fled to Czechoslovakia and their home city of Prague. After a brief respite they were once more forced to flee in 1939, this time to London. On their arrival in England they were welcomed and championed by leading members of the British design fraternity, amongst whom were Sir Gordon Russell, the doyen of British architects Sir Charles Reilly and Jack Pritchard, founder of the modernist design company, Isokon. Much of the Contemporary style of the textiles and wallpapers shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain were heavily indebted to Jacqueline's influential designs of the 1940s. Many examples of her work were featured prominently at the Festival and from then on she became a major influence on pattern design internationally. She developed a large client group in the United States during the fifties and sixties, amongst whom were Associated American Artists, Hallmark Cards and American Greetings Ohio. In the later 1950s and throughout the 1960s she became increasingly involved with Sir Misha Black and the Design Research Unit (D.R.U.), working on the interiors for boats and planes and trains, particularly the design of textiles and plastic laminates for BOAC and British Rail. One of her last commissions from Misha Black, in the mid-seventies was a distinctive moquette for London Transport, for seating on both buses and tube trains. Her work and influence did not just extend to the large corporations and exclusive couturiers but was familiar to the general public through stores and companies such as John Lewis, Liberty of London, David Whitehead, Edinburgh Weavers, Sandersons, Warerite and Formica. Her remarkable achievement finally received public recognition in 1984 when, at the age of 81, she was made an R.D.I. - a Royal Designer for Industry - the ultimate accolade for any designer in Britain.

Lidija Novakovic offers an explanation of the remarkable link found in the Gospel of Matthew between the royal messianic title "Son of David" attributed to Jesus and his miracles of healing. There is no doubt that this represents a Christian development, because there is no extant early Jewish text that portrays the Davidic Messiah as a miracle worker. Yet, given the predominantly Jewish character of Matthew's Gospel, the origin of the concept of the healing Messiah should still be sought in the traditions of the Second Temple Judaism. The underlying principle of Matthew's portrayal of Jesus, however, cannot be found in the traditions about Solomon as an exorcist or healer, or about the eschatological prophet like Moses. Rather, the intelligibility of the healing Messiah is secured through Matthew's own skillful interpretation of selected biblical passages, especially from the Book of Isaiah.

Chen Cheng naquit en 1365 sous le regne du dernier empereur mongol Shundi (1333-1367). Il connut dans son enfance les desordres de la fin des Yuan et l'avenement de la dynastie Ming (1368-1644). Laureat du concours du palais, il servit comme fonctionnaire du corps des envoyes diplomatiques sous les trois premiers empereurs Ming. Il mourut apres une longue retraite en 1457. Cette recherche vise a retrouver la trace de ce personnage pour lui redonner vie dans son epoque. Elle tente de presenter la vision des royaumes etrangers que pouvait avoir un voyageur chinois de cette epoque fortement marque par sa propre tradition. La politique de Yongle (1405-1424), fils du fondateur de la dynastie, tira son originalite d'une ouverture accrue sur le monde chinois, jusque vers un Occident lointain, ou les envoyes imperiaux se rendirent par voies de terre et de mer. La notoriete de Chen Cheng tient surtout a ses relations de voyages en Asie centrale. Sous le regne de Yongle, l'envoye imperial se rendit par trois fois aupres du fils de Tamerlan, Shahrukh, en sa capitale Herat. Au retour de sa premiere mission, en 1415, il presenta a la cour le "Journal de voyage dans les terres d'Occident" et le "Memoire sur les royaumes indigenes des terres d'Occident". Pour compenser la secheresse de son Journal et comme pour s'humaniser davantage a nos yeux, Chen Cheng nous offrit ses "Poemes de route". Si le chemin a travers les deserts et les montagnes n'est pas decrit minitieusement, on peut y suivre de loin en loin le cheminement mental de l'auteur et ressentir avec lui quelques emotions du voyage: joies, deconvenues, surprises, inquietudes mais aussi l'amusement de decouvrir. Chen Cheng n'est pas une figure dominante du pantheon des lettres chinois, mais il est surement representatif d'une elite talentueuse et cultivee de son temps, fidelement devouee a l'institution imperiale.
