Jean Prouvé began to design portable and demountable barracks for the French army during the Second World War. After the war, the French government commissioned Prouvé to design inexpensive, effective housing for the newly homeless, prompting him to perfect his patented axial portal frame to build easily constructed demountable houses. Few of these groundbreaking structures were built, making them exceedingly rare today—prompting Galerie Patrick Seguin’s tireless efforts over the past 27 years to preserve and promote these important designs. The gallery owns the largest collection of Prouvé’s demountables, 22 in total. This volume focuses on his Metropole Demountable House, and is luxuriously illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs. Though lacking any formal education in architecture, Jean Prouvé (1901–84) became one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, boldly experimenting with new building designs, materials and methods. “His postwar work has left its mark everywhere,” wrote Le Courbusier, “decisively.”

This book consists of several carefully crafted essays on the subject of gambling. The first two essays relate the latest trends on technology and communications to the development of actual gambling practice. And so the first essay documents the impact of simulcast racing on wagering dollars—the impact simulcast bettering has raised the total amounts wagered from .25 billion dollars in 1985 to 15.62 billion dollars in 2002. Bettors find great interest in this developing technology. The next essay untangles the logic of the "double-auction gambling market" by explaining how the experimental work at George Mason University has and is altering the role of the bookmaker who now functions as a mere broker coordinating contracts between bettors. This development is especially obvious in Britain where online gambling is legal. As for the burgeoning state lotteries especially in the United States, we offer three insightful essays. The first recalls the hidden costs that these entertainments often imposed on the community. Indeed, the second essay offers empirical evidence that the persons "most likely" to play the lottery are not only the poor but those poor who are close to getting over the "poverty line." Peter Piot, founding executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), recounts his experience as a clinician, scientist, and activist fighting the disease from its earliest manifestation to today. The AIDS pandemic was not only catastrophic to the health of millions worldwide but also fractured international relations, global access to new technologies, and public health policies in nations across the globe. As he struggled to get ahead of the disease, Piot found science does little good when it operates independently of politics and economics, and politics is worthless if it rejects scientific evidence and respect for human rights. Piot describes how the epidemic altered global attitudes toward sexuality, the character of the doctor-patient relationship, the influence of civil society in international relations, and traditional partisan divides. AIDS thrust health into national and international politics where, he argues, it rightly belongs. The global reaction to AIDS over the past decade is the positive result of this partnership, showing what can be achieved when science, politics, and policy converge on the ground. Yet it remains a fragile achievement, and Piot warns against complacency and the consequences of reduced investments. He refuses to accept a world in which high levels of HIV infection are the norm. Instead, he explains how to continue to reduce the incidence of the disease to minute levels through both prevention and treatment, until a vaccine is discovered.

The expressive paintings by the Armenian artist Armen Eloyan (b. 1966) are as beguiling and seductive as they are repulsive. According to Eloyan, a fine painting is like a good joke, the pieces must fit together. With his characteristic dark humour, colourful paint and thick black contours he reveals a dark universe, in which things are thrown out of kilter and the viewer is confronted with existential questions. Cartoon-like figures emerge from mysterious landscapes, as though they have stepped out of a comic strip. They find themselves at the mercy of a harsh, dystopian reality. Eloyan's characters seem disturbed, melancholic and alcoholic, and appear to be in a state of existential meltdown. Almost masochistically they seem to passively accept their destiny. Eloyan combines influences from street art and cartoons with references to the great pioneers of painting, such as Willem De Kooning, Caspar David Friedrich and Philip Guston. He presents a world in which familiar figures, whom we often associate with our own youth, have lost their innocence. The publication is realised in collaboration with the FRAC des Pays de la Loire and the Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp.

The uses and practices of sign languages are strongly related to scientific research on sign languages and vice versa. Conversely, sign linguistics cannot be separated from Deaf community practices, including practices in education and interpretation. Therefore, the current volume brings together work on sign language interpreting, the use of spoken and sign language with deaf children with cochlear implants and early language development in children exposed to both a spoken and sign language, and reports on recent research on aspects of sign language structure. It also includes papers addressing methodological issues in sign language research. The book presents papers by "more seasoned" researchers and "new kids on the block", as well as papers in which the two collaborate. The contributions will be of interest to all those interested in linguistics, sociolinguistics, cultural studies, interpreting and education.
