Although Franz Boas--one of the most influential anthropologists of the twentieth century--is best known for his voluminous writings on cultural, physical, and linguistic anthropology, he is also recognized for breaking new ground in the study of so-called primitive art. His writings on art have major historical value because they embody a profound change in art history. Nineteenth-century scholars assumed that all art lay on a continuum from primitive to advanced: artworks of all nonliterate peoples were therefore examples of early stages of development. But Boas’s case studies from his own fieldwork in the Pacific Northwest demonstrated different tenets: the variety of history, the influence of diffusion, the symbolic and stylistic variation in art styles found among groups and sometimes within one group, and the role of imagination and creativity on the part of the artist. This volume presents Boas’s most significant writings on art (dated 1889-1916), many originally published in obscure sources now difficult to locate. The original illustrations and an extensive, combined bibliography are included. Aldona Jonaitis’s careful compilation of articles and the thorough historical and theoretical framework in which she casts them in her introductory and concluding essays make this volume a valuable reference for students of art history and Northwest anthropology, and a special delight for admirers of Boas.

The three main objectives of the book are to: Explain the basic physics and formalism of quantum field theory To make the reader proficient in theory calculations using Feynman diagrams To introduce the reader to gauge theories, which play a central role in elementary particle physics. Thus, the first ten chapters deal with QED in the canonical formalism, and are little changed from the first edition. A brief introduction to gauge theories (Chapter 11) is then followed by two sections, which may be read independently of each other. They cover QCD and related topics (Chapters 12-15) and the unified electroweak theory (Chapters 16 - 19) respectively. Problems are provided at the end of each chapter. Aenne Biermann is regarded as one of the important avant-garde photographers of the twentieth century. Together with Bauhaus artists like Lucia Moholy and Florence Henri she was represented in the pioneering exhibitions of the late 1920s and early 1930s. In 1930 Franz Roh, the art critic and early patron of Biermann, dedicated to her the legendary monograph designed by Jan Tschichold “Aenne Biermannˑ60 Fotos ”which is now being published again as a reprint with commentary. As early as 1928, Franz Roh referred to the “remarkable” photo artist Aenne Biermann (1898–1933), who attracted the attention of experts with her close-up pictures of plants. In the following years the photographer, an autodidact, became an important artist of photographic modernism. Her works created a haunting and aesthetically fascinating pictorial world with close-up views, extreme detail shots and lighting contrasts. She mostly found her motifs in her immediate vicinity: in addition to numerous still lifes with everyday objects and nature photos, she also repeatedly photographed her children, their object world and their activities. Many originals were lost during the Second World War, including the 60 photos in this publication. The authorised reprint of this volume is a tribute to a great artist of the modern age.

Angeborene und erworbene Formänderungen der Gelenk­ bestandteile, Beeinträchtigungen durch Systemerkrankungen des Organismus, Entzündungen, Verletzungen, Geschwülste, Arbeitsschäden und degenerative Vorgänge sind zu nennen. Proportionality is a ubiquitous concept in law. While mostly associated with fundamental rights review, it also plays an important role in private law. In this context, proportionality requirements can be the result of both traditional private law reasoning and the influence of constitutional law. The present volume aims to explore different forms and functions of proportionality in selected private law contexts and jurisdictions. The contributions cover constitutional and theoretical underpinnings of proportionality's role in private law as well as specific examples of how proportionality affects private law in different areas and across different jurisdictions. They include perspectives on German and US-American private, procedural, and constitutional law as well as a special focus on the European dimension.
