Academica Press The Manuscript Book of Stephen C. Foster
In 1851, Stephen C. Foster purchased a blank notebook, in which he wrote original manuscripts for both famous songs such as "My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night!" and "Old Folks at Home," as well as lesser-known songs such as "The Little Ballad Girl," "Ellen Bayne," and "Jenny's Coming O'er the Green." University of Wales Press Barry Island: The Making of a Seaside Playground, c.1790- c.1965
Barry Island was one of the most cherished leisure spaces in twentieth-century south Wales, a playground of generations of working-class day-trippers. This book considers its rise as a seaside resort and reveals a history that is much more complex, lengthy and important than has previously been recognised. As conventionally told, the story of the island as tourist resort begins in the 1890s, when the railway arrived in Barry - in fact, it was functioning as a watering hole by the 1790s - yet decades of tourism produced no sweeping changes. Barry remained a district of 'bathing villages' and hamlets, not a developed urban resort. As such, its history challenges us to rethink the category of 'seaside resort' and forces us re-evaluate Wales's contribution to British coastal tourism in the 'long nineteenth century'. It also underlines the importance of visitor agency. Powerful landowners shaped much of the island's development but, ultimately, it was the working-class visitors who turned it into south Wales's most beloved tripper resort.

University of Washington Press Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace
Artists Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace began collaborating at Pilchuck Glass School in 1979 and went on to become pioneers of style and technique in the art glass world. The innovation, scale, and complexity of their work firmly established their place alongside other major glass artists, and their work is included in many museum collections around the world. Despite this, Kirkpatrick and Mace have not been afforded a scholarly review of their careers, which now span more than thirty years. Throughout their productive careers, Kirkpatrick and Mace have consistently explored seminal themes: principles of “drawing” as incorporated into glass, the metaphoric content of our relationship to nature, and the appropriation of materials to support a visual idea. This book will bring the depth and richness of these themes into comprehensive focus.

Amberley Publishing C-130 Hercules in the RAF
From its introduction in the mid-1960s, when the first aircraft were delivered, through the various humanitarian missions, the Falkland Islands conflict and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, right up to the introduction of the J version, the Lockheed C-130 Hercules continues to give outstanding service with the RAF and with an expected retirement date of 2030, this would total a service career lasting for a staggering sixty-four years of continuous operations. Designed with an internal hold the same size and dimensions as the American railroad boxcar, the Lockheed C-130 Hercules could carry a wide variety of cargo over distances of up to 2,950 miles. It offered a great improvement over the eclectic mix of its predecessors, the Blackburn Beverley, Handley Page Hastings and Armstrong Whitworth Argosy, all of which continued to provide support, albeit in a secondary role, within RAF Transport Command once the Hercules was introduced to service. This gave an advanced leap in transport capabilities that the RAF had never had at its disposal until the Hercules joined the active inventory. This book tells the full story of one of the most important aircraft in RAF service over the last fifty years. A workhorse that is also astonishingly adaptable for a range of specialised operations, the Hercules is capable of carrying troops as well as vehicles, moving men from one location to another in peacetime training or inserting special forces teams on clandestine operations in time of war.

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Letters and Travels By C. H. Spurgeon
This collection of C. H. Spurgeon’s travel letters offer a rare insight into a different side of the famed preacher. Of the many telling phrases C. H. Spurgeon gave the world, one speaks to the way he, and his contemporaries, greatly valued letters, or what he called “gifts of the pen.” He lived in a golden age of letter–writing, and helped to make it so. The best letters, he knew, are written with caring reflection, love of the written word, wit, and a vivid sense of place. His travel letters model these gifts. His love of nature, history, culture, and art live—and breathe—in these pages. Rest and recreation, on holiday, when he could follow these interests, were meaningful, renewing gifts from God. He cherished them, and needed them. They lend a special, one–of–a–kind voice to this book. With a painter’s gifts, set amid the countryside of England, or places of Europe, Spurgeon’s Travel Letters are eloquent, and many times moving. His “gifts of the pen” shine in them. At long last, they have a place well–deserved, a place all their own. Now, we ourselves may travel with Spurgeon—discovering the world that he knew. And we may bless God for the privilege given in these letters.

We eat everything we see... In a windswept cottage overlooking the sea, Wilder Harlow begins the last book he will ever write. It is the story of his childhood companions and the shadowy figure of the Daggerman, who stalked the New England town where they spent their summers. Of a horror that has followed Wilder through the decades. And of Sky, Wilder's one-time friend, who stole his unfinished memoir and turned it into a lurid bestselling novel, The Sound and the Dagger. This book will be Wilder's revenge on Sky, who betrayed his trust and died without ever telling him why. But as he writes, Wilder begins to find notes written in Sky's signature green ink, and events in his manuscript start to chime eerily with the present. Is Sky haunting him? And who is the dark-haired woman drowning in the cove, whom no one else can see? No longer able to trust his own eyes, Wilder feels his grip on reality slipping. And he begins to fear that this will not only be his last book, but the last thing he ever does. Discover the new dark thriller from the bestselling author of The Last House on Needless Street. 'So beautiful, so dark and so vivid' - JENNIFER SAINT 'A beautifully sinister tale of perception and identity' - JOANNE HARRIS 'Enthralling and heartbreaking' - M.R. CAREY

Stanford University Press H. C. for Life, That Is to Say...
H. C. for Life, That Is to Say . . . is Derrida's literary critical recollection of his lifelong friendship with Hélène Cixous. The main figure that informs Derrida's reading here is that of "taking sides." While Hélène Cixous in her life and work takes the side of life, "for life," Derrida admits always feeling drawn to the side of death. Rather than being an obvious choice, taking the side of life is an act of faith, by wagering one's life on life. H. C. for Life sets up and explores this interminable "argument" between Derrida and Cixous as to what death has in store deep within life itself, before the end. In addition to being a memoir, it is also a theoretical confrontation—for example about the meaning of "might" and "omnipotence," and a philosophical and philological analysis of the crypts within the vast oeuvre of Hélène Cixous. Finally, the book is Derrida's tribute to the thought of the woman whom he regards as one of the great French poets, writers, and thinkers of our time.

This book explains topics from binary heaps to sorting to NP-completeness, and dedicates a full chapter to amortized analysis and advanced data structures and their implementation. Figures and examples illustrating successive stages of algorithms contribute to Weiss’ careful, rigorous and in-depth analysis of each type of algorithm.
