Princeton University Press A Mathematical Theory of Evidence
Both in science and in practical affairs we reason by combining facts only inconclusively supported by evidence. Building on an abstract understanding of this process of combination, this book constructs a new theory of epistemic probability. The theory draws on the work of A. P. Dempster but diverges from Depster's viewpoint by identifying his "lower probabilities" as epistemic probabilities and taking his rule for combining "upper and lower probabilities" as fundamental. The book opens with a critique of the well-known Bayesian theory of epistemic probability. It then proceeds to develop an alternative to the additive set functions and the rule of conditioning of the Bayesian theory: set functions that need only be what Choquet called "monotone of order of infinity." and Dempster's rule for combining such set functions. This rule, together with the idea of "weights of evidence," leads to both an extensive new theory and a better understanding of the Bayesian theory. The book concludes with a brief treatment of statistical inference and a discussion of the limitations of epistemic probability. Appendices contain mathematical proofs, which are relatively elementary and seldom depend on mathematics more advanced that the binomial theorem.

Faber & Faber The Mill for Grinding Old People Young
In the cold dawn of Christmas Day 1897, Gilbert Rice, 85 years old and with failing health, recounts his journey into manhood in a city on the cusp of great change. Belfast in the 1830s was a city in flux. Industrialisation had led to an increase in commerce and the rapid swell of the population as workers flocked to the newly created jobs. Gilbert, a young man with prospects, begins work with the Ballast Office, looking after Belfast Port. Beneath the shadow of the Harland & Wolff shipyard Gilbert explores this ever expanding and exciting city whilst becoming aware of the political undertones and the sectarian tensions that still brew beneath its respectable veneer. In a city that still resonates with the legacy of the 1798 Rebellion Gilbert begins to question the injustices that he sees. Oxford University Press Inc DataDriven Campaigning and Political Parties
What is data-driven campaigning? According to prevailing accounts, this idea describes the rise of increasingly sophisticated, highly targeted, and often invasive uses of data deployed to suppress votes, manipulate voter preferences, or boost a candidates'' popularity. The power of data is seen to be transforming campaigning practice and raising democratic concerns. And yet, there is a significant problem with these ideas: we have at best a partial understanding of how data-driven campaigning is practiced, and limited clarity about its implications.Presenting data from interviews with over 300 professional campaigners in Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK and US, we provide unique insight into the components of data-driven campaigning by political parties. This book makes three key contributions. First, distinguishing between data, analytics, technology and personnel, they give unmatched descriptive insight into these four components of data-driven campaigning, revealing significant va

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd The new radicals: A generational memoir of the 1970s
By the end of the 1960s, opposition to apartheid was in disarray. Yet in the space of a few short years. major and radical challenges developed that would set the country on a new path. This lively and original book tells the story of a generation of activists who embraced new forms of opposition politics that would have profound consequences. In the process it rescues the early 1970s from previous neglect and shows just how crucial these years were in the struggle to transform society. It explores the influence of Black Consciousness, the new trade unionism, radicalisation of students on both black and white campuses, the Durban strikes, and Soweto 1976, and concludes that these developments were largely the result of home-grown initiatives, with little influence exercised by the banned and exiled movements for national liberation.

Harriman House Publishing How to Value Shares and Outperform the Market
The simplest way to make money in the stock market is to buy shares when they are cheap and make profits when their prices increase. This technique is known as value investing and is the creed of the world's most successful investor, Warren Buffett. But how do you know when a share price is cheap? This book explains in simple terms how you can develop your own UK share and FTSE100 valuation spreadsheets to calculate share and market valuations. Comparing the valuations to current market prices reveals when shares are underpriced and produces calibrated buy and sell signals. The FTSE100 system, for example, indicates the periods when you should be invested in the FTSE100 and the periods when you should not be. Since 1984 the in-periods have produced 94 times more capital growth than the out-periods. The new valuation system is the heart of this complete practical guide for managing your own investments. It shows how you should be able to double the value of your long-term investments purely through avoiding high commercial fund management fees.Using the new valuation system should help you do a lot better than this and, for example, secure a pension up to eight times larger than that provided by commercial managers. As well as providing comprehensive information about the practical and profitable ways in which you can use the new valuation system, this book is a complete toolkit for creating personal wealth through UK equity investment. It includes risk controls, tax breaks, free information sources and recommendations on the best service providers. In short this book is your first step along the road to financial security.

The Catholic University of America Press Supper at Emmaus: Great Themes in Western Culture and Intellectual History
Supper at Emmaus traces various important intellectual topics from the ancient world to the modern period. Generally, as in its treatment of the question of whether the long-standing contrast between cyclical and linear views of history is helpful, it introduces important thinkers who have considered the question. A preoccupation of the book is the appearance and reappearance across the centuries of patterns used to organize temporal and cultural experience. AŸer an opening essay on transcendental truth and cultural relativism, the second chapter traces a distinction, common in historical writings during the past two centuries, between an alleged ancient classical “cyclic” view of time and history, used to describe the claimed repetitiveness of and similaritiesbetween historical events (“nothing is new under the sun”), and a contrasting Jewish-Christian linear view, sometimes described as providential in that it moves through a series of unique events to some end intended by God. In the latter, history is “about something,” the education of the human race or the redemption of humankind. As in each of the remaining essays, the book then attempts to draw out the limitations of what the current consensus on this topic has become. It does this for such things as our current understanding of religious toleration, humanism, natural law, and teleology. Some of the essays, such as those on debate about Augustine’s understanding of marriage or the concluding illustrated essay on the baroque city of Lecce, are published for the first time. Others are based on previously published contributions to the scholarly literature, though generally each of these chapters concludes with a postscript that engages with current scholarly debate on the subject.

Scarecrow Press Miguel Delibes: An Annotated Critical Bibliography
Miguel Delibes (1920- ) is one of Spain’s most important post Civil War narrators. Since his first novel was published in 1948, his writing has matured and many of his works have been acclaimed by critics. Miguel Delibes is an exhaustive survey of the bibliographic material generated by Miguel Delibes’ writings. It provides the scholar with quick access to a panoramic view of what has been written by and about Delibes. "The bibliography proper is divided into three sections: Delibes' writings, criticism which Meyers classifies as 'scholarly' (books, articles, chapters in books) and other critical commentary (dissertations, interviews, surveys, book reviews). The task of classification and documentation of such disparate areas would itself make this volume useful, but each entry is accompanied by an invaluable summary and critical commentary." —BULLETIN OF HISPANIC STUDIES

This introductory text explores the lives of 100 Black women and their unique and meaningful legacies upon the history, society, and culture of the USA. Today, the names and remarkable achievements of Black women such as Maya Angelou, Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey are well known to many Americans. Yet throughout American history, many lesser-known Black women like them have made invaluable contributions to sports, science, the arts, medicine, politics, and civil rights. Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, who published the first newspaper written for and by African American women, championed the cause of women''s suffrage. Matilda Sissieretta Jones, whose father was an enslaved person, toured Europe and performed at the White House in front of four different presidents as one of the great sopranos of her generation. Augusta Savage, overcoming racism and sexism, became one of the most celebrated sculptors in history. This book serves as an important reminder

Marilee Anderson disappeared twenty-five years ago at the age of fifteen, but police are digging up the rose garden behind her parents' home in search of new evidence on a hot summer day in St. Paul. Marilee was last seen on a Sunday morning, when her father sent her off to a convenience store three blocks from home to buy a loaf of bread. Reporter Warren "Mitch" Mitchell and photographer Alan Jeffrey of the Daily Dispatch are the first newsmen on the scene at the Anderson home, but they learn almost nothing from closed-mouthed police until the diggers turn up a human skeleton. To everyone's amazement, the bones prove to be those of a young adult male. Police suspect that the mysterious remains are those of Jimmy Bjornquist, a teenager who worked at the convenience store and disappeared the same day as Marilee. But Jimmy turns up living on the West Coast, and he tells Mitch what happened at the store on the day Marilee vanished. Jimmy's story raises the possibility that Marilee is still alive somewhere. After a man who offers to give them some current information about Marilee turns up dead, Mitch and Al respond to an invitation from an anonymous phone caller and find themselves staring down the barrel of a gun.
