University of California Press The Castrato: Reflections on Natures and Kinds
The Castrato is a nuanced exploration of why innumerable boys were castrated for singing between the mid-sixteenth and late-nineteenth centuries. It shows that the entire foundation of Western classical singing, culminating in bel canto, was birthed from an unlikely and historically unique set of desires, public and private, aesthetic, economic, and political. In Italy, castration for singing was understood through the lens of Catholic blood sacrifice as expressed in idioms of offering and renunciation and, paradoxically, in satire, verbal abuse, and even the symbolism of the castrato's comic cousin Pulcinella. Sacrifice in turn was inseparable from the system of patriarchy - involving teachers, patrons, colleagues, and relatives - whereby castrated males were produced not as nonmen, as often thought nowadays, but as idealized males. Yet what captivated audiences and composers - from Cavalli and Pergolesi to Handel, Mozart, and Rossini - were the extraordinary capacities of castrato voices, a phenomenon ultimately unsettled by Enlightenment morality. Although the castrati failed to survive, their musicality and vocality have persisted long past their literal demise.

Sounds True Inc Self-Acceptance Project: How to be Kind and Compassionate Toward Yourself in Any Situation
Even after years of spiritual practice, self-improvement, or therapy, many of us still have trouble with one essential challenge: self-acceptance. How do we stop from constantly judging ourselves as inadequate, finding fault with our bodies, or being plagued by our inner critics? The Self-Acceptance Project was created to help us find a solution. In this collection of essays, contemporary luminaries in spirituality, psychology, and creativity offer insights and teachings for truly embracing who we are no matter what our circumstances, including: • "Waking Up from the Trance of Unworthiness"—Tara Brach illuminates the source of self-rejection and offers a powerful process to reverse unconscious patterns • "Compassion for the Self-Critic"—Dr. Kristin Neff shows how self-judgment is often a misplaced but well-meaning survival instinct • "Held, Not Healed"—Jeff Foster on making the space to accept anything that arises with open-hearted curiosity • "No Strangers in the Heart"—poet Mark Nepo helps us reconnect to the sense of deep aliveness that we were born with • "Taking in the Good"—Dr. Rick Hanson offers effective neuroscience-based insights and practices for overcoming our "negativity bias" • "Transforming Self-Criticism into Self-Compassion"—Dr. Kelly McGonigal reveals practical strategies for changing the habitual way we treat ourselves Why is it often so much easier to feel compassion and forgiveness toward others than toward ourselves? Where do our self-critical voices come from? Can we be motivated to grow and excel while still accepting ourselves as we are? In these 19 offerings, some of today’s most trusted teachers share their most valuable practices and techniques for building confidence, transforming our relationship with our inner critics, and using any circumstance as an opportunity to treat ourselves with kindness, compassion, and love.

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Claude Sandoz. A Kind of Panorama: Anse Chastanet, St. Lucia 1997-2018
Since 1997, artist Claude Sandoz has been sharing his time between his native Switzerland and the Caribbean island of St Lucia. Each time he returns from the Antilles, he brings back chests of sketches and drawings produced during his stay. The island topic provides an assortative focal point for his exuberant work. Sandoz is no longer a tourist, he has 'gone native' at his second home and developed a much more complex relationship with St Lucia than a mere seasonal artist's residence would allow. This moment in Sandoz's art that ethnologists describe as going native is the focus of this new monograph: when own and alien match, overlay with and possibly enrich each other. The book features a vast selection of Sandoz's works, complemented by topical essays and a conversation with the artists. Interspersed poems by Caribbean writers round out the book. Text in English and German.

Harvard University Press The Kindness of Children
Visiting a London nursery school, Vivian Paley observes the schoolchildren's reception of another visitor, a handicapped boy named Teddy, who is strapped into a wheelchair, wearing a helmet, and barely able to speak. A predicament arises, and the children's response--simple and immediate--offers Paley the purest evidence of kindness she has ever seen.In subsequent encounters, "the Teddy story" draws forth other tales of impulsive goodness from Paley's listeners. Just so, it resonates through this book as one story leads to another--taking surprising turns, intersecting with the narrative unfolding before us, and illuminating the moral meanings that children may be learning to create among themselves.Paley's journey takes us into the different worlds of urban London, Chicago, Oakland, and New York City, and to a close-knit small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Her own story connects those of children from nursery school to high school, and circles back to her elderly mother, whose experiences as a frightened immigrant girl, helped through a strange school and a new language by another child, reappear in the story of a young Mexican American girl. Thus the book quietly brings together the moral life of the very young and the very old. With her characteristic unpretentious charm, Paley lets her listeners and storytellers take us down unexpected paths, where the meeting of story and real life make us wonder: Are children wiser about the nature of kindness than we think they are?

New York University Press Daddies of a Different Kind: Sex and Romance Between Older and Younger Adult Gay Men
An intimate look at gay and bisexual daddies and their younger partners Over the past several years the term “daddy” has increased in popularity. Although the term has existed for centuries, its meaning has changed over time, and today can refer to desirable older men. In the Western world, same-sex male couples are far more likely to have large age gaps than other types of partnerships, and Daddies of a Different Kind analyzes the stories of gay and bisexual daddies and asks why younger men are interested in older men for sex and relationships. Based on interviews with self-described daddies and young adult men in relationships with older men, Tony Silva uncovers why it is more common for gay and bisexual men to have large age gaps in relationships than heterosexuals or LGBTQ women. These stories reveal that queer relationships with large age gaps are not consistent with a sugar daddy/gold digger stereotype. Instead, daddies mentor younger adult men and transmit knowledge intergenerationally, including how to navigate homophobia, access gay communities, and have fulfilling sex. Silva shows that demographic research understates the commonality of age-gap pairings among gay and bisexual men, and illustrates how daddies shape gay and bisexual communities both culturally and sexually. A fascinating read, Daddies of a Different Kind breaks many commonly held stereotypes about gay and bisexual life.

Boutique of Quality Books Secret Kindness Agents
Secret Kindness Agents was a featured segment on the Hallmark Channel airing of The Christmas Train in December 2017.Moved by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, Ferial Pearson wondered if a simple act of kindness could change a life. She thought of the school where she taught and the students she guided every day and wondered, what would happen if we started secretly carrying out small acts of kindness in school? Could a modest act of compassion really change the course of a life? She posed the question to her students. They didn’t have the answers but they were willing to find out. So they became the Secret Kindness Agents. They not only changed the lives of those they met, they changed their own. Their hope, their hearts, and their hunger for happiness will inspire you to change your small corner of the world, in your own way, for the better. Let them show you how they did it, and how you can do the same. This program has been implemented in over 350 schools across the country.
